Look on the label in your passenger glove box for one of the following codes...

GT4--3.73
GT5--4.10
GU6--3.42
G80--locker

If I'm not mistaken  the Z71 was given only the 4.10 but, I could be wrong.

Standard gear ratio on Z-71 was 3.73 on 2002

It was '06 3.42 standard wasn't it ? I know 3.73 was standard '02 to '04

GT4--3.73
GT5--4.10

was only ratios for 2002..

also changing will not impact mileage  enough for you to even be able to calculate it..

drive 55mph max and do not move gas pedal much

With the 2007(onward?), the Z71 still has the 3.73s as standard (4.10s optional), but the Z71 package does include the locker (G80).

I was going to post the same question when I came across this thread (horray search function !)

Does having a tow package change anything??  I though you got the 4:10 gears with a tow package.

I have a 2002 Z71 w/ tow and was dissapointed to find out I only had the 3:73.
What made me check was a conversation with another Av owner and doing burnouts (long story >:D  )He could do them easily and I can't even get my tires to chirp. Come to find out he has the 4:10's

nope..

The question was stock gear ratio on '02 Z71 ?

It was 3:73 on '02 thru what year ? Was it just '06 they stuck 3:42 in ?

The tow package was optional (still is ?) Maybe on the 2500HD a tow package and 4:10 were standard

neither was stock... had choice
but 3.73 was ordered more based on looking at 2002..

Nope.  Tow Pkg option was just that - the tow hitch and trans cooler.  You could still get either gear ratio on the 2500.  (Mine was a 3.73 rear end, the 4.1 was a $100 option.)  More 3.73s were out there because of the gas mileage.  If I remember correctly, it was about 2mpg between the two (as posted on the 1500s - the 2500s didn't have their mileage estimates posted on the window sticker).

I factory ordered my '02 1500 4x4 with 3:73 and swapped it for an '04 Z71 with 3:73, forgive me for assuming 3:73 was standard equipment. You rarely see a 4:10 unless it was factory ordered by a customer, dealers tend to order cookie cutter vehicles. Sorta base, middle and top as far as options.

My '02 was 1500 4x4, 3:73, sport leather seats, side steps, tow package.
(nothing else, has to be a rare combo)

When I first got my 02, the dealer had 3 on the lot fully loaded to chose from and they all had 4:10s.

When I ordered my 03, I ordered 4:10s

I thought I had 3:73's for years till I checked the code in
MissAvalanche's run on my VIN...........................................

It does depend on the dealer, I guess I wrongly assumed 3:73 was standard. Some areas of the country didn't stock Avalanches at all while other areas you couldn't find cladded once the WBH came out. They try to stock what's selling best. You can get a good deal on a slower selling model.

what is the approx cost of changing a 3.73 (locking) to a 4.10 (locking)? I assume you have to change gears in rear+front diff.

it will vary by location, a member around here had it done for around 12 or $1300

Lots of other factors to take into consideration besides just trailer weight limit.
Cargo in AV, tongue weight, CGVWR, weight per axle,,,,

But, 2004, 1500, 2wd, 3.73 gear is 7,300# (attached pic is from 2004 owners manual.)

I had a 1998 Suburban and went from a 3:73 to a 4:10 and loved it! I only noticed a .5mpg drop is all. Was very happy. Might do it to the Avalanche too.
