What Is That Noise?

At the risk of sounding like an idiot on my second post, I'm gonna ask anyway. What is the small circular vent/speaker looking thing on the interior roof just above the driver's head? I'm getting some kind of humming/rattling noise coming from it when the truck is running. I originally thought it was a rattling coming from somewhere behind the driver's door panel, but finally isolated it to this "thing" above my head.

That thing is used for the auto AC...there is a little fan in there....try searching for this as it has been discussed.

Some consider the noise normal while other do not....I have not heard the noise in my truck....

Some confuse it for the ONSTAR mic but it is not.

Welcome to the club.

ygmn,
are you sure thats not the onstar microphone and that the sound coming out isn't microphone feedback. I had a little bit of that problem and my dealer said it was the microphone for onstar. Besides, what would the point of putting a vent/fan above the drivers head be? Why not above anyone else's head?

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't think thats it.

A reply to my last reply...
I can see how it could be the sensor for the Auto Ac.... and maybe the thing above the visor is the mic for Onstar... I just wonder why the dealer said thats what it was.

Your dealer sounds a bit confused. I bet it was a salesperson that told you that and not a mechanic. The reason it is over the drivers head and not somewhere else is because the passenger or back seat can be vacant but still have a driver but vice versa is a bit more problematic. >:D

Please search for a thread in this section titled something like
"What is it" there is a thread which explains it in detail from a member using the service manual on the truck.

Good Luck

What ever that little grill thing is above my head, I have the same problem. It buzzes all the time, except when I bring it to the dealer. ARRGH! :C:

Turn up the stereo >:D

Or find those threads where others have complained and print them out and bring to dealer and say "see I am not crazy others have this problem and their awesome dealers fixed it....why can't you?"

I think they might fix it then or just think you are still nuts >:D

Hi all. I work at the Silverado factory in Pontiac MI. That thing above your head is indeed a temperature sensor for the auto HVAC system. The OnStar mic is in the left side of the overhead console. Hope this helps. :)
