Just a curious question here, but what is the highest top speed anybody has personal knowledge of in a AV. It does not matter from what year or model of AV. My Davis Carship has one recorded at 154 MPH on 1-03-04. It really surprised me too. I can send the file to anyone who wants the different data with the different mods and test. The file is 388K, so I can't post it here, or I would.

Est. 142. Needle pinned at 120, friends Cobra pinned at 140 just barely.

No date and time or location for obvious reasons.

105 MPH (estimate as needle was OVER the 100 mph marker), total stock AV 2004, Z-71 with Corsa and K&N,DOWNHILL l, Tail Wind, 30 degree day, moon and stars lines up right and I had wished it could/would go more but the general is looking out for my saftey with a rev limiter... >:D

Guys,

We all usually spur eachother on to make mods and exchange info on various items relating to the AV - and yes we are all responsible for our own actions. In my humble opinion this is a dangerous topic. I might see someone trying this just to say hey my AV can do this speed or that speed. In my distant past I have broken the 150mph mark quite a few times - and today I am not proud of it. Over time I realized the crazy risks I took. I actually LOST friends to cars accidents from just racing on the highway - no drugs or alcohol there. The only place that this makes sense (to me) is on a racetrack. By all means test the AV - but on a racetrack where no one come flying in front from an on ramp.

I make no apologies for sounding like an old fart - I'm only 40.

I'm guilty of doing at least 142 before I had to back down...This was all according to my Hand held GPS....Really can't say if it is completely accurate, but I felt I felt it continue to climb speed well after it was pegged.

You are absolutly correct!! I did post what I was doing but agree with you one hundred percent. That date and time that I did what I did was a little hairry but I will say it was on a stretch of highway with no on or offramp for 5 miles, almost completly straight and very late at night. I DO NOT CONDONE STREET RACING OR HIGH SPEED RUNS ON ROADWAYS. racing and top speeds should be tryed at certified facilities only. I am not an old fart I am only 25. I am only doing this from my experiences that I have encountered.(ex-street racer)

Lets hopefully not hear of any bad things coming out of this thread.

I have gotten to 100 indicated once in the Av. It took forever for it to get up there (on an empty highway). It seems that the Av is just too heavy for high speeds. Maybe that's why they only installed a 100mph speedometer. I don't street race, but I do follow others that drive really fast and sometimes get ahead of them (j/k). But as for the Av and top speeds, I don't think the Av is made for it. My other truck gets up to 110mph in no time and you can feel the power, the Av is a heavy towing, semi-luxury, all purpose truck meant to be driven calmly (plus it guzzles too much gas at high speeds). If anyone wants some real thrills and danger, get a sports bike and watch how fast 170mph pops up on the speedo. It's really not that fun, especially when thoughts of your family and such start running through your head. Please everyone stay safe and think smart. There's no harm in a little fun, just do it at proper times in proper locations.

My AV is bone stock motor-wise so no big number here but when I had to rush my dad to the hospital I pushed as fast as I could and got to 100 mph. I honestly do not remember much of the ride other than wishing I could go faster. Normally I do not try to top out while driving the AV after all it is a truck not a sports car.

After reading this thread I jumped into my Av with my cordless drill, cardboard box and duct tape and headed to AutoZone and purchased three cases of GoldenEagle 104+ Octane Boost and epoxy putty.

Then, right in the parking lot I drilled a small hole in the bottom of my gas tank to get all of the old gas out. I patched the hole with the epoxy putty and started ripping open the bottles of Octane Boost.

After the 3 cases of boost were added, on the way to the highway, I stopped at a gas station to inflate my tires to 150 psi. I read somewhere that too little air pressure in the tires increases drag and gas mileage.

I then took the cardboard box and cut it up into sections to fit over the grill. I then duct taped the carboard to the grill along with and other opening. For you newbies guys, I taped up the grill to reduce drag.

One last stop and I was ready to race. I stopped at Osco Drug and bought another three cases of 90% Isopropyl Alcohol. I figured if drag cars could run alcohol, so could I!

Let me tell you, I got a lot of strange looks from people when I was pouring the alcohol in my tank.

Once up the on-ramp I stopped on the side and waited for the traffic to die down. I set my stopwatch and had my GPS unit on the dash in full view. I was reading to break a few records!

Once all clear I puched the pedal and rocketed myself forward, boy that pure Octane Boost was worth every penny.

25 mph and climbing, started to hear funny noises from the engine, but I knew it was just that magic mixture prodding the engine to work harder.

At 45 mph a strange smell invaded the cabin, kind of a sweetish-solvent like smell. I had the dog with me and he always has gas, so I figured it was just him letting out.

55 mph the Av handled like it was on ice, maybe too much tire pressure? I'm glad I have a steady hand to keep it on the road.

65 mph and going strong, still getting the noises from the engine and the smell, but everything is happening so fast, no time to worry.

75 mph and I'm feeling a little light headed...what did that dog eat?

85 mph and I can see the carboard peeling away from the grill, slapping against my bug deflector. Engine is making ugly sounds and I'm having trouble keeping it on the road.

At 86 mph the carboard broke loose and ripped off my bug deflector which flew into my wipers, bending them into a worthless mass of steel and rubber.

87 mph the engine made a huge farting noise followed by all four of my tires popping in unison. Due to my supreme driving skills I was able to get to the side of the road without issue.

I am happy to say that my stock 04 Z71 Av made it to 87 mph!

I think if I get the proper Isopropyl/Octane Boost mixture correct I could get a few more miles per hour out of her. I'll have plenty of time to work on it while my truck is getting fixed.

Moral of the story.......don't do anything stupid, speed kills. Don't endanger your life or the lives of others, save it for the track.

Disclaimer- The above story is fiction, do not attempt any of the above mentioned statements, you could die!

Oh and by the way... see Daddy's Little Girl to the left?? I want to live long enough to see her grow up, go to college, have a career, eventually get married, and have childeren of her own. I'll give the little ones rides in my vintage 2002 Chevy Avalanche, as it turn 400k miles!! :B:

One night taking my Daughter to the ER I hit the 100MPH limiter.

On one hand I wished I could go faster (She was running a 106 fever! ), but when I got in the turns on the freeway I felt that is just about as fast as I should be going (any faster and it might have been 3 people in the ER from the crash.)
It was 2 in the morning and I was the only person on the 6 lane Freeway, I would never do that unless a life were at stake and I was sure I wasn't puting someone else's life in danger. (P.s. My daughter came though fine and my wife never even knew how fast we were going ;) )
I think the 100MPH limit is is just right as the AV held strong and I was never out of control.

Alright, just curious here, but how are any of you with stock av's going faster than 96 mph? Did they change the speed limiter in '04? I know reprogramming can get you to go faster. Everytime my speedo nears 95 the engine cuts and I can't go any faster!

I take my motorcycle up to the track every few years. It satisfies my need for speed. I have to admit when I was young I got the ole Cuda up on the highway and went for broke. Looking back, I was lucky....and stupid. Lucky not have killed myself. Those old muscle cars didn't handle well at all. Not to mention the bias ply tires and the weight, crappy brakes....etc.

Keep The Rubber Side Down!

I hit the limiter a few times going and coming back from TX this December. Gotta get that thing removed . . . . No Performance mods . . . just a heavy foot. . . . Open road . . . 2 radar detectors too LOL.

I have to admit, I'm guilty of "seeing what it can do". A couple of months after I bought the truck, I was on a flat stretch of highway, no traffic around, clear day. I put my foot to the mat. I have an 8.1 liter with 3.73 gears. It felt like I was in a jet liner accelerating for take off. Constant acceleration. Somewhere around 140 km/hr (85 mph) it shifted to top gear, got a second surge of acceleration which continued all the way to 160 where it hit the speed limiter and the computer shut me down. Thankfully. I have no idea how fast it could go but it got to 160 faster than any car or truck I've ever been in. BTW, I have no plans to disable my speed limiter. It serves a very usefull purpose.

well I was not trying to see what I could do... more like trying to pass a Semi I got stuck behind while following a couple other club members to the northern part of the State to meet up with the Cali group.... 100mph.... (meanwhile being yelled at ove the radio to hurry up cause I was running out of road.... :7:

I will not say the other 3 things I was also doing while passing this semi at 100 on a long right hand curve in the highway.... :E:

raced a civic turbo....did 155 est. was on his speedo.

dont do this....very scary, the truck shakes real bad............real badddddddddddddddddddddddddd.

easy chance of flipping over.

but thats it.

uhhh.... confused... your "speed limiter" allows your truck to hit 160??????
that's not much limit....??

am i missing something?

Well I just can't let this go. I know there may be a few out there that have concerns that someone will run out and kill someone. Please let me share this little story for you, and then you decide. Speed never kills by the way, and the reasons are:

In September of 2000 on a real beautiful fall morning I decided to ride my Harley to work. At 8:16am a uninsured lady putting makeup on and BSing on her cell phone on how she just got her Ford Expidition in her divorce settlement ran a redlight while I was one block from my office and traveling about 15mph. I was run over like a speed bump.

Yes mu bike totaled. I lost my leg after nineteen operations, my eyesight in one eye, broke my right arm in 7 places, over 80 in my left leg, crushed my right side of my face and head. I was really a mess. In fact if it hadn't been for my boss behind me they would have waited a while to find my wife. I was not expected to live and life flighted to Houston Medical Center where I lived for the next four months and returned home to stay in a hospital for another two months. This was all straight through, no coming home. I was in a coma for sometime. I returned to Houston over the next 2 1/2 years for corrective surgery and sent out to pasture in forced retirement.

To keep this short, speed doen't kill or hurt. Not paying attention does it every time, and you don't even have to be moving. I can't really tell you or explain everything I went through and my family because I don't know. I to want to see my kids grow up and do well which was a big adjustment for them. They have done well. In fact my daughter has her BSN and is a RN in Houston today. My other kids have done equally as well.

So attentative is the culprit, and taking drugs, legal or illegal. I know this lady was a chronic pain patient and took high doses of narcotics and now resides in prison for four years before she is eligable for parole. I will be there. So next time you drive, it will be the attentive driver that has the best chance of coming home and protecting your children. If you really want ot know what hell is, come visit me one time for coffee and I will give you the whole story. You are always welcome.

Be safe......................
