What other 5.3 will fit?

I have a 07 avy that needs an engine, it is a 5.3 with active fuel management 8th digit on the vin is a 3. Which other if any 5.3's will fit and what do I have to change? would prefer to keep the active fuel management option. :help: :help: :help:

Not quite sure by other 5.3 if looking for a used low miler same year Chevy or GM light truck not sure of any car. I?m not up on other years that will interchange wit the new platform 07 up.
Changing out the AFM is a major undertaking. So in keeping it, is your 5.3 beyond a rebuild, you could look into a short or long block from the General with a warranty.
Summit also sells GM and they have their own short and long block. You could check their TEC line.

My insurance company has cheap low mileage engines but not the afm, they have 5.3's for 07 chevy trucks and was just wondering if another 5.3 can be used because I just want to drop one in and don't want to spend the money on new or rebuilt. I have a 455 I'm building and just don't feel like doing another engine right now. The reason the 5.3 is gone is my avy has a ton of miles on it about 170,000 and does a lot of pulling and hard driving but the truck is in excellent shape otherwise and I want to keep it.

Just because you have 170K? Is it running OK? If you really need to change it out and really want to keep the AFM, check junk yards for a rolled truck with AFM and less mileage to get the motor from.  Otherwise, I'd ditch the AFM and drop in an HO 5.3 or a 6.0L.  If you use it for towing, you're not using the AFM anyway...

Ok so can I put in a non afm, that's what I want to know and if so which one and what do I have to do?

Okay someone on here must know is there any other 5.3 that I can replace my afm 5.3 with and what is involved? reprograming etc. that's all I want to know. Which ones will take the least modifications or simply just drop in if possible? and no I don't want a 6.0 gas guzzler and no I'm not rebuilding the old one. Thanks for your help.

Any small block, LS-based GM engine will fit without physical modifications to the truck.  The computer will need to be reprogrammed, at a cost of $400-500, but that will give you a lot of "tuning" options.  It all depends on how much you are willing to spend for what final result.  You could get a brand new engine from GM, installed, for like $6k, but you would be stuck with the same AFM type motor I'd bet.  I doubt that they would do a program change to accommodate the change from AFM to a conventional motor. You could get a brand new engine of your choice, install it yourself, and spend less than that. If towing is your goal, I'd drop in a 6.0L, 4L80E transmission (both available from a junk yard or look online...ebay or whatever), reprogram the computer through someone like Blackbear or Nelson and do the engine swap yourself and look at probably $4k out the door.  Now, with a junk yard or used motor online, you don't know how the motor is.  You can also get rebuilt motors online with a warranty.

Physically, any small block LS-based GM engine will fit and bolt right up.  Anything other that swapping your AFM 5.3 for another AFM 5.3 will require a reprogram at a cost of $400-500.  You want easy, that's easy. You could look at junk yards for a rolled GM truck with the same motor and less mileage if that is your goal. No reprogramming required.  If you do anything other than swap for the same motor, you need to reprogram.

Sorry was in a hurry, it is amazing how little info there is on the LC9 and what other 5.3's will work, I found an "vin m" that will work if I change top plate and injectors for $1200, there is a LMG 5.3 and a LY5 5.3 that apparently won't work I think one is an iron block which shouldn't matter other than 100 pounds heavier. The afm can't be that rare is it? I can't find any info on which other engines had it etc. and it is impossible to find one for sale.

If you want to do away with the AFM.
Here is some read.

I have a 2011 avalanche with a blown 5.3 motor. I purchased a motor from a guy with a crashed 2008 avalanche 5.3 with under 100,000 mile motor. After dropping it in and making my connections, I noticed that the motors timing chain cover were different. The original motor has a sensor for the cam gear and the replacement doesn't. Would I have a problem if I just switched covers and do away with the cam gear sensor.

The physical dimensions of any of the LS platform GM engines are the same. You could bolt in a 5.3 just like what you have all the
way up to an LS7 etc, so the size of the engine is not the issue.

Any GM LS motor along with the ECU/ Computer that goes with it will drop right in. When my engine went down at 260K I chose to rebuild it
and do away with AFM, which in my mind is little to no gain compared to all the issues it causes. My engine failed due to AFM pure and simple.
My advice if you want to keep the truck and drive it for years is eliminate it, but your cheapest route would be any 5.3 LS style lower mileage motor
from a junk yard. All the Silverados, Tahoe's, Avalanches and Suburbans have these same engines..

Your 07 has a 4L60E trans where the 08's and have the 6 speed which would more than make up for the loss of AFM in my opinion. But
you would need the engine/trans and ECU from the donor vehicle for it all to work correctly and its a bolt in swap..

Good luck Sir.

The question about the 07 motor is 10 years old.

The new guy replying to the thread is asking about the cam gear sensor, he dropped an 08 motor into his 2011 truck. I have no idea how to help him, but thought I'd try to help direct the responses.

@El.toro you'd likely have better luck starting a new thread than jumping into an old thread.

The second link in post #15 should help.

If yours is an o7 them the odds are that your engine is the LMG 5.3. That was far and away the most common engine in the 07s. It is Flex Fuel and
also AFM. An LMG should be a literal bolt in swap for your truck and run with no issues. if your 07 is a Flex Fuel model.. All the 07s and up have AFM if they are a 5.3.

Hello, I am looking to rebuild my 07 Chevy Avalanche motor. My question is if I want to rebuild it without AFM what is the best kit to buy and what steps need to be done.
