What would you order if you could do it all over again?

Finally convinced my wife it was time to get an AV. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Now, what are the basics to make sure to get when you are definately taking down roads/trails less traveled?

  • Locking diffs.?
  • Gear ratios?
  • Z71 package?
  • 16in vs 17in rims? (16s will allow for more rubber for airing down)
  • Tow package?
  • Anything else to make sure to order or NOT order?

I think the locking diff is part of the Z71 package. 4.10's would be nice for hill climbing, but quite frankly, I'm not sure the potentially worse mileage is worth it... my Av (with 3.73's) runs out of traction LONG before it runs out of torque. Now of course drag racing is a totally different story!

Tow package is standard on 02's but as an option on 03's it's worth considering, even if you don't plan on towing regularly.

You can get good agressive rubber in either 16's or 17's these days so that's a tossup. If you plan on replacing the tires and/or wheels anyway, don't pay for the more expensive stock ones...

Just my $.02 :)

I'm very happy with my Z71 package and 17" rims.
My only mistake was the 3.73 gears, if your going roads less traveled, get 4.10's.
I'll probably change my setup to 4.10's and an Auburn in the rear, money pending.

After seeing a Black Escalade EXT on my way to work, I'd have to say I'd try real hard to sell the wife on how much cooler the EXT is for the extra 10-12k. Of course after I wake up from the huge slap on the face that knocks me back to reality, I realize there isn't anything else I could have put on my Av that I WE don't already have.

I'd do what I did all over again - given a 2002. Now if you're looking at a 2003, the choices are a bit more mind boggling.

Mines a Z-71, 3:73, bench seats (wanted to sit six), no On-Star (didn't want my cell phone tied to my truck), Denali Gauge cluster (easy sweet mod), Thule rack (for hauling toys). Nice truck - lower than mid-range price.
