I just purchased a '02 2500 Av. After driving it for a couple of hundres mile I started getting the this high whine at about 30-45 mph on an upgrade hill or 55-60 mph in D. It's a momentary sound that comes and goes after the speed barrier... I took it to Curry Chevorlet in Scarsdale NY...where I bought it from and they told me that "there's no way that we're gonna find what that is", so I just smile and though "NEW TRUCK", "LAZY SOB"...I 'm gonna call the manager towmorrow and tell him what is goning on...woner if the Lemon laws cover this??

Wish I could help. But I would definitely complain about the lack of customer service.

Could you tell us where ( area ) you think the noise is coming from? e.g. trans, wheels, engine...

I had a similar problem - have you noticed any small puddles under your truck or a burnt metal smell?

My problem was my transfer case - it started making the noise once I had drove 10 miles.

The fix was that my dealer had to rebuild the entire transfer case. It was full of metal :8:

This is a known problem on Chevy trucks that happens once in a great while - my dealer knew about it happening on other GM products once in a while.

I have a 1500 AV and also have a "whine". I notice mine at idle and just above but then other normal noises cover it up. It sounds like it's either the tranny or the power steering pump. I haven't noticed any mechanical problems with either part but this sound reminds me of problemd I've had in the past with both on other cars. As I've mentioned in other replies here....my dealer is not doing the job I would expect and pretty soon I'm going to get someone at the factory to take action.

:)The whine is from the cut of the gears in the HD trans--you can,t win--HD means a somewhat noisier trans.Don't think I would worry about it --you have three years to sort it out.

M<y 2500 AV has the same noise on acceleration in the lower gears 1 and 2nd---not in o/d during cruise.

good luck with the 2500

Yeah my 03 1500 z66 2wd does it too. The whine sounds very much to me like an old Ford steering wheel pump that is about to explode. The pitch of it has a direct correlation with engine speed whether in park or in gear but it disappears at about 40 mph. Either it's gone or the road noise covers it up. I guess it time to check some fluid levels next time I have a chance and the AV is hot.

I'm on my second 2500 Avalanche and both of them had/have a gear whine mostly noticable between 58 and 60 mph. Three dealers said this is normal for this vehicle, so I have taken oil analysis samples from front and rear differentials, trans and transfer and the results came back normal. My best guess is that the front drive shaft spins with no load on it unless it is locked into 4WD and so at some point this free wheeling shaft picks up a slight gear whine from the transfer. I will be getting the extended warranty on this vehicle unless I trade it first.
