Which fuse for switched auxiliary power?

Hi guys, I posted this question three days ago in another forum, got no replies, and now realize I probably should have asked it in a 2007-forum.  First let me fess up, I don't have an Avalanche, although my good friend has a 2007 AV LT3 in the Metallic Orange color :).  Instead, we have a 2007 Suburban LT1 in Bermuda Blue.  We love it!

Here's my question.  I have a Garmin StreetPilot i5 (great GPS by the way) that I want to hard wire into the Suburban.  I formerly had it wired into our 2004 Tahoe Z71 and in that vehicle I had used an "add-a-circuit" fuse doubler to tap into the rear wiper fuse for hot power that was switched on and off with the ignition switch.  It did not have retained power after shutting off the vehicle.

I did the same thing with the Suburban.  But lo and behold, turns out that circuit is hot all the time.  And so I tried a few other fuses and they all were hot all the time.  I want switched power so the GPS will turn itself on and off automatically as I turn the vehicle on and off.  All the power ports in the vehicle are always hot.

Do the 2007's have any fuses that are switched off with the ignition?  One with retained accessory power after shutoff would be fine.

I can't imagine I'm the only one that's faced this, but the search function didn't find it for me.  Of course, I know the Avalanche doesn't have a rear wiper, but maybe there's another fuse that would work.

Thanks for the help, guys.

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave,

I also have a Garmin GPS which I plug into the dash power outlets. I was pissed to see that my 2007 AV dash outlets are hot all the time.

I could not find a quick fix via the drivers side fuse box. What I did learn is that the these power outlets are also on the same circuit as the OBD Diagnostic Port. (Plug under dash for plugging in a Programmer or Diagnostic scan tool).

I found and removed the fuse for the Dash power outlets/ cigar lighter under the hood fuse box # 53 (20 amp) and tried to jump the load side of it to another fused circuit used by the backup camera circuit (10 amp) fuse # 43 using a jumper wire on the load side.

That converted my Power outlets to only be hot when the ignition is on.

I bought a Predator Programmer and when I tried to install the tune, it failed when I was asked to cycle the ignition key on and off.  Jumping the Acc. Power Outlet Circuit to a ignition only circuit killed the Diagnostic Port's "Hot all the time" requirement.

Fuse Number 43 under the hood is on the ignition circuit so if you tap into that fuse you will have a ignition only hot wire.

Good Luck !!

Good news guys.? Apparently no need to go under the hood for switched power.? My other post got answered and it seems we have switched (and constant hot) power sources right above our left foot!? I haven't tried them yet myself, but it looks ideal.

Check out this link with pictures.? http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php/topic,74956.0.html

Credit (and thanks!) go to gm_geek for posting this solution.
