I've posted about my 2002 2wd aval b4 and have commented in several of the polls on this subject.? Thought I'd bring you an update --

Picked up my aval from the Reedman Toll dealership this evening after putting another $1800 on my CC trying to eliminate a problem that surfaced last Nov.? Last Thanksgiving, I paid $1100 to have the carrier bearings replaced in response to my complaint about whine / grinding noise in the rearend.? Immediately after fix, returned vehicle with a continued complaint about intermittent whine while coasting between 40 and 55 mph.? Was told by R/T to drive 3K miles to seat bearings ---? At next oil change, shims were adjusted to eliminate whine --- no deal.? I was given option to live with the noise or pay $1700 to replace ring & pinion gears.? Figured I would live with noise since I didn't get extended warranty.

Brings us to several weeks ago when the intermittent noise had grown to a constant, louder and incessant whine.? R/T dealership stood by their solution to eliminate noise by replacing ring & pinion gears.? I bit the bullet yesterday and scheduled replacement for today.? Low and behold, when they opened up the differential, the new carrier bearings were
destroyed again.? Postmortem was that one of the splines on the pinion gear had chipped and contaminated the lubricant resulting in the bearing problem.

GM anted up a 50% refund for the $1100 job.? I'm going back to them for all of this second iteration.? I can't believe that they won't acknowledge a problem and deal with it straight up !!!? ?
