First off, I guess a whirring noise from MY rear end would be bad, especially for my wife
, but I'm talking about my AVALANCHE here.
I have an 04' Z66 with under 4000 miles on it. I have noticed a "whirring" (for lack of a better word) at between about 48-55 MPH and about 1500 or so RPM when the truck is not under load (just enough gas to keep the thing at a constant speed). It goes away as I increase speed or slow down. If the truck is accererating through that speed range I can't hear it. But it is clearly evident if I am just driving at say 50 MPH and not changing speeds (in overdrive).
Normally, I would say this "whir" sounds just like tire noise that comes from aggresive treaded truck tires. But this is not the case. The noise immediately goes away if I let the gas off, and immediately comes back once I apply it again. (At that speed, the gas pedal is probably only being depressed 1/4" or so). I can alternate between coasting and accelerating without really changing speeds, and the noise comes and goes like clockwork.
I am pretty convinced it is coming from the rear end. It doesnt sound like engine noise, and it isn't air intake noise. It seems to come from underneath or behind me, but thats almost impossible to tell. I guess it could be tranny noise too. It really sounds like a set of gears are improperly meshing at a "critical point" RPM to me. BTW, the truck has the standard rear end in it, I wanna say 3.73:1.
I had an 02' model avalanche for only a month before I bought this one. It had its share of problems, as it leaked water like a sieve (I would only call it a Chevy Avalanche if it was snowing outside, normally it was my 02' Chevy Waterfall
). I hated the leaks and other little problems, but I liked the truck so much (and I pretty much stole it for $17000 with 35K miles), that I went ahead and traded it in for an 04' model. It didnt have this noise though.
I am wondering if anyone else hears this noise. It isn't bad, but it is irritating, and it makes me weary of what it may turn into 10,000 or worse, 36,500 miles down the road. I havent taken it in to the dealer yet, but I imagine they will call it a normal noise. It scares me because I know of several people who have lost their rear ends on late model Chevy trucks.
If you happen to think about it, listen for it next time you are out driving around 50ish on flat ground, and please reply if you are hearing anything or not.
Thanks,
