"whirring" noise, is my rear end bad?

First off, I guess a whirring noise from MY rear end would be bad, especially for my wife ;D, but I'm talking about my AVALANCHE here.

I have an 04' Z66 with under 4000 miles on it. I have noticed a "whirring" (for lack of a better word) at between about 48-55 MPH and about 1500 or so RPM when the truck is not under load (just enough gas to keep the thing at a constant speed). It goes away as I increase speed or slow down. If the truck is accererating through that speed range I can't hear it. But it is clearly evident if I am just driving at say 50 MPH and not changing speeds (in overdrive).

Normally, I would say this "whir" sounds just like tire noise that comes from aggresive treaded truck tires. But this is not the case. The noise immediately goes away if I let the gas off, and immediately comes back once I apply it again. (At that speed, the gas pedal is probably only being depressed 1/4" or so). I can alternate between coasting and accelerating without really changing speeds, and the noise comes and goes like clockwork.

I am pretty convinced it is coming from the rear end. It doesnt sound like engine noise, and it isn't air intake noise. It seems to come from underneath or behind me, but thats almost impossible to tell. I guess it could be tranny noise too. It really sounds like a set of gears are improperly meshing at a "critical point" RPM to me. BTW, the truck has the standard rear end in it, I wanna say 3.73:1.

I had an 02' model avalanche for only a month before I bought this one. It had its share of problems, as it leaked water like a sieve (I would only call it a Chevy Avalanche if it was snowing outside, normally it was my 02' Chevy Waterfall :E:). I hated the leaks and other little problems, but I liked the truck so much (and I pretty much stole it for $17000 with 35K miles), that I went ahead and traded it in for an 04' model. It didnt have this noise though.

I am wondering if anyone else hears this noise. It isn't bad, but it is irritating, and it makes me weary of what it may turn into 10,000 or worse, 36,500 miles down the road. I havent taken it in to the dealer yet, but I imagine they will call it a normal noise. It scares me because I know of several people who have lost their rear ends on late model Chevy trucks.

If you happen to think about it, listen for it next time you are out driving around 50ish on flat ground, and please reply if you are hearing anything or not.

Thanks,

this has been covered a couple of times. you may want to start here... Rear End Whine Solved. although there are other threads on this topic i thought this might get you going in the right direction faster. you will be able to find other info of you do a search. good luck.

this problem exists in a lot of AVS if not all. here is a link to the TSB'S
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/tsb/tsbsearch.cfm
I took mine in and had it fixed. do your self a favor if they diagnose your truck with this problem have them order the parts & have them at the dealersip before you drop your truck off for repairs. IT WILL TAKE A LONG TIME TO GET THE PARTS , SEVERAL DAYS.
good luck & be patient, the whine is annoying but there is nothing broken on your truck. A friend of mine has a ford and his is doing the same thing at the same mph ( between 45 &55 mph )
Set your cruise at 70 mph on a quiet & smooth stretch of highway , you will hear it then too :E:

I disagree.....maybe a percentage but not all.....or a lot IMO....

Mine does not make it and after reading posts on here I would guestimate only about 3-5% of our membership have stated they have this problem......

I hear a whining noise at about 50, but it isn't bad enough to get me worried or want to get it fixed. (Usually takes my dealer 2 trys to get something fixed right without messing up anything else.)

Hey let's just do a poll on the 2002 up to the 2004.
I think a lot o f us AV owners are just not saying that we have the problem.

Good idea.....I will start it....

Well, I finally got around tp taking my AV in to the dealer for several little items, including the rear end noise. I just knew that they were going to tell me there isnt anything wrong with it, and possibly install the foam filled drive shaft fix. I was shocked when they called me late this afternoon telling me to come pick up a rental, because they are changing out the rear end gears! I have a bad feeling that I WILL have problems with it now. They acted like they had never heard of the TSB about the drive shaft. Kind of hard to have faith in a mechanic who works on these things every day and knows less about the TSBs than I do. I hope I'm wrong here!

yup they went right 4 the ring and pinion
i was lucky they asked me first i said ill be right down 2
pick her up dooonnttt tuucchh myyy pummkin\

ill call them back in a bit after my nerves have seteled  :C:

Round two they replaced my ring/pinion gearset. Three weeks later the whine is back. The only thing I can hope is that it self destructs soon because the warrenty clock is ticking. :E:

I had an intermittent whining noise a while back and I just told her to shutta you face while I'm driving, and so the problem was solved. :2:

I had an intermittent whining noise a while back. It seemed to go away on it's own. This was on my 03, not on my 02. :p I still have groaning moose sound in my steering box though. I'm going to wait a while longer before I have the dealer replace the steering box.
