Who locks thier sadle bags?

I mean I locked my passenger side one especially because I have been using as an ice chest the past few weekends and I have a few beers and cokes in there left over.

I just looked in my cooler side today... I have a broken bottle and 3 most likely very skunked rolling rocks...I now remember throwing them in a couple weeks back on the way to the disc course. Maybe bottles without ice is a bad idea  :p

I am usually a stickler for keeping things locked (car and house doors), but for some reason I never lock the saddle bags.  I have nothing but ponchos, ropes, rags and gloves in there, and in 10+ years have never had anything taken from them.  I'd venture to say 95% of the people have no idea what the saddle bags do or that they even open.

I do lock the tailgate when I have anything stored in there.  Otherwise that stays unlocked too.  No one is going to want my bed covers based on how they have changed color over the years.

I recommend locking the saddle bags even more so now since the avalanche has been discontinued. Even faded bedcovers would be expensive to replace! Supermobile

Lock them?  Heck, I bought the truck a few months ago and haven't been able to get the stupid things OPEN even!!!

Not to insult if you already know this, but I fought with mine for a good 5 minutes before I realized the lock pushes in like a button once its unlocked, and stiff when its locked. I felt sooo dumb.  :E:

To quote the immortal words of Mr. H Simpson, "Du' OH!!"

Karma Story: I said that ^^ and discovered yesterday that one of mine is broken. It locks.. but it doesn't do any good cause the lid just lifts open either way.  :E:  :needhug: This is a job for the boyfriend to fix !!  >:D

If you can open it then it doesn't lock

Here's an idle thought, if you use the side bin for a cooler and leave it unlocked you could get some old style wooden mouse traps to protect your beverages, they'd float.

ok... pics stolen from other av site

when mine quit latching it was the small roll pin that holds the latch part in. The pin had fallen out and the latch parts were in the toolbox (thankfully)

in this pic its the part with the springs on it

the pin they are pushing out in this pic

I just lined it back up and put the pin back in... now I just keep an eye on it  (y)

Boyfriend and his buddy put some WD-40 on it and slammed it shut a couple times and it was locking fine last night. I'll keep checking it just to be sure.

@Flint -- I meant the locking mechanism would physically lock, but the latch wasn't holding onto the metal catch inside the compartment. It was the ACTUAL lock that was messed up, rather the latch inside. But I get what you're saying, locked or unlocked doesn't matter if its not holding onto anything.

I was kidding you about terminology, it went in the lock position but didn't "physically lock".

WD-40 dries out quick, ask them to shoot it with Lock Ease or a similar graphite product.
WD-40 is more a cleaning product, it sounds like it got the gunk out.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaale. Technically...
He was looking for WD-40 but couldn't find it but found some spray cleaner, I'm assuming brake cleaner ? but he didn't ever say. If it messes up again I'll definitely look into those  (y), I really just wanted to make sure it wasn't broken somewhere.

Mine co-exists between the US and Mexico much of it's life.

I'm not just locking it to prevent theft.

Yep, pretty much always locked.

My guess its a deterrent, but they seem pretty flimsy to me if someone really had the right tool and a dark alley?.
