Since I am a new owner and new to this site, I am amazed that Chevy stopped making them even though they are still so popular.  Does anyone know why Chevy stopped?

First welcome to the site.

This topic has been discussed many times with many different opinions and none of them official GM opinions. pwtr02ss may be right in that sales were down.
The decision t stop production could have many influences, downturn in economy for expensive trucks, increasing gas prices, EPA and other government regulations for fleet gas mileage/pollution etc.
Then you have things like the AV is the Swiss Army Knife of trucks and does many things well but is not the best at any one thing such as towing, off road etc. GM also slowed in advertising the AV and magazines and TV shows didn't know how to classify the AV when they did best pickup or best SUV type of articles so many times it wasn't in front of the general public.  Many people who haven't test driven an AV think it's just a more expensive version of a Silverado.

:welcome: to the club ArmyDude. I hope, like VW did the Beetle-Ford did the T-Bird and Dodge did the Challenger/Charger, that GM brings back the AV. Bean counters get involved and say it is just not money well spent because they just didn't sell enough of them. You can't convince me they sell all Corvettes they make. I do like owning the first year of the Swiss Army knife of GM trucks. They have their quirks but so what. When they first came out and I saw them in my shops I just didn't see the draw. But as time went by I realized how they grow on you. Then when they get under your skin and you gotta own one, they stop making them. I think they can come back as long as enough people speak out about it. They always say, "Never buy the first year of a new vehicle." I got some money saved back that is going toward the first new one if they make it. Time will tell.  (y)

I will definitely buy a new one if they bring them back.  Never have been a Chevy fan of anything.  Always a Ford guy, but this truck is just too awesome.  This beats the F-150 in versatility and style as far as I'm concerned.

Also, gotta say... Go CHIEFS!!!

GM bean counters have no clue of the popularity of the Avalanche. The Avy is compromise of two worlds (truck & SUV). Not strong in either one, but has its own strong virtues. My wife does not like the length and the inability to see over the tailgate. Drivability is great on the highway, clumsy in the city. Gas mileage is a horrible in the city, but acceptable on highway and long trips. The kids love the Avy comfortable seating of 6 and the cargo space. It handles a weekend at the beach or the mountains with ease. A fun note: My wife's social friends at first hated the Avy due to appearance and size. But after using it for their shopping trips and support activities (soccer, fund raisers, church support functions etc), they found it was a great compromise vehicle between a truck and SUV. Several have switched from a truck or SUV to the AVY. The cost of fuel and the lack of a diesel engine option help kill the Avy run. A comeback would be great but I cannot envision it happening with GM current problems. If have one, hold on to it and put in the maintenance. If you can afford a truck and a SUV in your garage then go for it. If not the Avalanche is still a great compromise vehicle.

Took my beautiful young bride and the kids on a road trip yesterday.  I asked, "Avalanche or Jetta?"

Of course, no one wanted to get stuck in the Jetta.  (y)

HaHa.  My kids like riding in the Avalanche better than my wife's Jeep Grand Cherokee.
