I know that Chief usually plans this, but in his absence and with National quickly going downhill, maybe we should think about organizing a regional meet. We can always turn it over to him when he returns, but he would probably appreciate us doing it anyway. I would like to volunteer to help in the organizing. Maybe we could get someone from OR or WA involved and someone from AZ. Also someone like Cindy from SoCal. With four of us, we could put together something that would work for all the chapters covered. What do you think? Speak up!

I do not want to take away from the Nation Meet in any way shape or form. We just purchased our first home and our budget will not permit a trip over the mountains. Something more local might be do-able, though.

I would need a lot more info before any commitment.

I think the idea for a
"Western States Regional Meet" (Wild West II) is a fantastic idea.(y)
Let's start talking about it...

I think a trip to the Grand Canyon would be great...

What about a Tri-State Cruise or something like that?
There are some awesome landmarks, National/State Parks and places to visit all within a reasonable day's drive between California... Arizona... Nevada... Utah.

After all, there's a Eastern Regional meet planned and a Southern Regional meet planned this year. Why not a Western Regional sometime this year or early next?

My family and I attended last year's Wild West 2002 and had an absolute blast. It took place in Oregon and Nor Cal... let's bring it down SOUTH this time!

Crescent City and Crater Lake is down south!

Some possible destinations:

Bryce Zion
Monument Valley
Moab
Grand Canyon
Arches
All of the above? ;D

Steel!... What are you talking about?
Crescent City and Crater Lake are not down South!
South of Washington maybe... but South? NOT! LOL ;)

Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, & Arches National Park...
and maybe even a quick visit to Las Vegas! ;D
The possibilities are endless.

Just an idea....

how about a gand cayon, petrified forest, indian caves, meteor crater, dino park, and lots more cruise... they areas I'm thinking about can be driven to in less than few hours each, about the same area in travel as wild west. I can get you the names of the places I am thinkig about down in the southern states. I dunno what people are looking into, but I can get the NOR-CAL boys together and start thinking of something.

PDX what about that one Oregon trail thing you were talking about???

Sure, here is a map for the Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route. ?This route follows roughly 700 miles of the wagon trail from Cave Lake, CA to Walla Walla, WA. That 700 miles contains very little asphalt. The vast majority of this run is gravel. ?Most people break it up into three sections. ?Then tackle it one section per year!

At more than one point the trail fades down considerably. ?A good GPS, good map, and you will find your way along.

To give you a better idea of what the trail really looks like here is a photo of the trail laid out using standard USGS maps.

BTW - those are yard sticks for reference. ?:D

I almost forgot.... that is only section three of the route.

I would be very interested in a south/west USA cruise through Arizona, Nevada, Utah, etc. Im out of New Mexico, so these areas are very obtainable with a day's drive. With the Nationals fading fast, I've been racking my brain about making a very long drive (16 hours or more) to either the Southern or even the Eastern Regional meet. A Western meet would take away all the pain. Besides, the places that you all are talking about are places that I have driven by many times and never stopped to see. It would be nice if the soul purpose of the trip was to actually stop and see all that cool stuff. Hopefully this trip will become a reality soon.

It would be great if the Chief would come down and lead us around again too.
YOU CAN COUNT US IN, I HAVE BEEN BY ALL OF THESE PLACES BUT NEVER HAD THE TIME TO STOP AND ENJOY THEM. SO WE ARE IN FOR THIS ONE.

This is a definite winner! ?

Here is a trip suggestion:

Saturday - Northern CA and Oregon members can travel to So Calif, spend night in the LA area
and leave for LV on Sunday Morning

Sunday - Arrive in Las Vegas, spend nite in LV
This will allow most So Calif and AZ members a travel day to meet in LV

Monday AM
Breakfast Buffet
Ethel M Chocolate Factory Tour in Henderson
Afternoon
Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, Valley of Fire. ?
From Valley of Fire (North Las Vegas),
we can head toward Utah or return for diner in Vegas
If we stay in LV Monday night, we can also take a tour of Red Rock Canyon on the way back

We can spend Monday night in either Las Vegas, Mesquite (NV/Utah border) or in Utah.

Tuesday
Zion & Bryce
Spend Tuesday night in Utah

Wednesday AM
Arches, Moab and/or North Rim of Grand Canyon

From those destinations we can either continue into Arizona and visit the South Rim of the Grand Canyon or return through Nevada.

Returing through Arizona will probably include an overnight stay in Pheonix, while Nevada would include an extra night in Las Vegas.

This will allow most people to take a 3-5 days off and complete part or all of the loop.

I have done parts of this trip before but to put it together as one continuous run would be awesome. ?Get ready to put in that vacation request.

I like it. The only thing I would change is: Saturday - Northern CA and Oregon members can travel through Yosemite go over the Tioga Pass and spend night in Bishop. It works as long as the trip is between May 30 and October 31, the average dates that the pass is open. If that doesn't work, don't drive to LA. Spend the night in Lovely Tehachapi or Mohave. That will save a couple of hours of driving time

I'm bored tonight...
So I went and hunted up some photos & links of possible destinations...
Mighty Pretty Pictures! huh?

I'll say.....I think you just created another folder of screensaver pics for me. To alternate with my Av pivs. :D

FYI - if you are considering Moab - Arches National Park is just north of Moab - it is a wonder place to visit - some of the huge arches are unreal.

Summer time in Moab is rough - it is hot and nasty - Moab is better in the spring or fall - think of going to Vagas in the summer time and not having all of the large buildings with AC to cool yourself off.

Spring or Fall is the best bet for most of these places. Mid Summer is HOTTTT. However if we are cruising in the air conditioned comfort of our AV it would not matter much. I would just try to avoid holiday weekends.

hq.. that's a good start... between all of us and with everyone's input we can put together an awesome trip.

I definitely don't think we'll be going in the high heat of the summer... probably later in the year or early next. ??? Don't ya think?

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING, EXCEPT IN REVERSE STARTING IN FLAGSTAFF. LATE OCTOBER EARLY NOVEMBER. ALREADY I CAN'T WAIT...

I created a map of the possible destinations:
image_map.gif

1-Las Vegas
2-Hoover Dam
3-Lake Mead
4-Valley of Fire
5-Mesquite, NV
6-St George, UT
7-Zion National Park
8-Bryce Canyon
9-Arches National Park / Moab
10- Grand Canyon National Park
11-Flagstaff, AZ
12-Lake Havasu City, AZ

The total route (all green lines) is about 1,500 miles. ?It could be substantially less if we bypass Moab/Arches and go to the Grand Canyon from Bryce (Saves 500 miles - a full day).

Flagstaff looks like a good stopover, it saves a trip futher south into Phoenix. ?Lake Havasu (London Bridge) or Laughlin, NV is a nice stop for people returning back to California and points further north.
