Will Full Size (17") Tire Fit Where The Spare Is?

Hello CAFCNA! This is my first post! I searched for this topic, but I did not see this question asked directly. So here it goes. A friend of mine gave me a full size 17" tire and rim off of an Z71 AV. My question is "Will it fit under my truck in the spare location without modification? Thanks in advance. This is the coolest fan club, I've ever been a part of... Oh, My AV?, Black Z71, born Jul 03, 2002. Purchased Aug 30, 2002. Soft tonneau, tan leather int., sunroof, On-Star, RWOL tires and no roof rack. Plenty of mods from this site to be added later.

i don't see why not, it is pretty roomy underneath, but only one way to find out. have someone watch the tire as you are pulling it up.

yes. i was at the dealer at lunch and they were doing that for another customer.

My question is....

has any body actually measured the diameter of the space underneath for the spare? I am curiious if I could get a spare 33" tire under there.

Yes. The 16" Firestone ? spare has the same overall height as the 17" Goodyears.

And Leather is right! ?>:D

So that is where Firestone is selling there tires to now. dang. Ford canceled there contract with them and GM picked them up for spares.

I appreciate all the feedback. I plan to measure the spare tire space for a sanity check before I mount it underneath. Thanks again.

Hey Leather! I agree. I can see plenty of mod money evaporating everytime I log into this site. Keep'em coming! :B:

Welcome to the best site west of the Mississippi!

Unless you are in the east, then it is the best site East of the Mississippi!

Actually there is very little difference in height between the 16" spare and the 17" factory tire.

:8: I just looked under my vehicle and saw that FIRESTONE and was fuming. I came here to make sure the dealer didn't swap, and found out the truth. IMO I think that stinks. I understand no rim, that's industry standard, but a mismatched tire...come on!

What did they save $30-70. I don't know anyone who would object to another $75 on the msrp to have the proper spare. Just me venting...thanks.

PS My next mod is to find a goodyear to replace

If what you're looking for is a matched tire, then by all means get that baby out of there. But if you're doing it because of all the Explorer Flips - Firestone Tires hoopla, don't believe the hype. The Firestone tires didn't have a notable problem on any other vehicle and it was Ford who designed the tire that was put on those vehicles anyway, Firestone was just the company who they signed on to build it for them.

Also, if anyone is interested in a 17" stock Z-71 spare rim and tire, my truck is due to be delivered late December and there will be 4 up for grabs. First come first serve!

A lot easier for us Avy owners to just replace the spare if possible. I just replaced that 265/70/r16 with a 265/70/17 on a alloy rim. It fits in the space with no problems about space. Now I have to check the other 3 vehicles.
