Windshield Shade

GUEST
Have been unsuccessful locating a windshield shade that will fit the Avalanche. More specifically, something that will fit properly, as in "made to fit" the Avalanche. Has anyone found a shade that really fits?

My local Chevy dealer just started carrying custom cut windshield shades. They are reflective metallic on one side and white on the other. They roll up and are thicker than most of the fold up kind, it is made of about 1/4" thick foam material.

It fits really well; I hardly need to drop the visors to hold it in place. I think the close fit really helps with the temp control. I think it makes a big difference in inside temp (I live in Vegas - it was 115? today).

Cons - it does not fold flat like the generic type (rolls into about a 8" tube that is held closed by a Velcro strap).

Cost was $28 (list of $34). I tossed the packing, so not sure of the brand name - next time I'm at the dealer I'll check it out (need to go back for the AC - third time).

Cheers, Jim

I use a "standard size" shade that folds into an accordian held together with a velcro strap. It too is thicker than normal pop up shades or similar accordian style shades.

It doesn't cover the windshield completely. It's about 1/2" shorter from top to bottom and about 2" shorter from left to right. If I were to stretch it out completely, then it will fit better. Because of its accordian shape, it's shorter from left to right. I'm sure it will straigten out with time.

Also, according to description it keeps car 40 degrees cooler or something to that effect.

It is reflective on both sides. Just got it from Pep Boys on sale for about 4.99

Carnac,
Any more information on the windshield shade you got from your dealer? I would like to know manuf., part number, etc. if possible.
Let me know.
Thanks,
vicious

I'll check when I'm there this evening - taking my truck in for the fuel tank and AC (third time for both). I'll post the info tonight. Cheers - Jim

I contacted the folks at Proper Auto Care trying to set up some special discount or group buy offer on their site, which offered over 350 car care products and they were not interested at all telling me they don't do that sort of thing. :6:

I am going to check around tomorrow since there is some interest.

I think it's Pepboys (might be Autozone) that has their jumbo truck and suv shades on sale this week for around $10. It was on the back page of their flyer this week. I'm planning on picking it up soon.

I did the same as imaniguana....I have a Sunset Orange Av. I got the large $9.99 shade in red. I put it in the window and with the tint it looks like a perfect match cause it looks orange.

I have seem some custom ones as high as $50+

I finally picked up my AV at the dealer. I checked on the brand of custom fit sunshade that I purchased there.

It is an "Intro-tech Custom Sunshade". I paid $27 + tax. They come rolled up with yellow cardboard packing on the lower half.

I found one web site that sells them (for a bit more than I paid).

They really work nice and the price is a good compromise between the el-cheapos and the $80+ ones from the small aircraft accessory suppliers.

Cheers - Jim

Try looking at the Eclipse SunShade product. It is designed to mount to the interior windshield and accordion folds away when not in use. I have carried the same one over to 4 different F-150s, so I know they are durable. They run about $60, but stay right where you need them. I get them from a local dealer here in DFW, but a quick Google search found this link on the web (w/ pics):

Enjoy!

PS: cross lists with Tahoe, box is in the truck, so don't have part number handy, but it is 23" tall with a special cutout for the mirror electronics.

I've used these and also one of their silver ones. The last several trucks I've had, I made a pattern and then cut it to fit the windshield size/shape with a pair of scissors. The inexpensive silver one I have now is like bubble wrap inside. I thought I'd have to tape the edges or something after cutting but didn't. It's all laminated together. Works great.
The idea was to also put some decals/stickers on it to dress it up but haven't yet. The last cardboard one I had was a big bulldog face and I drew sunglasses on it. Did the same with the one before that that had a man and woman on it (as in riding in the vehicle).

try the Meguiars [www.meguiars.co] Silverscreen Sunshades part no.: G-201 XL [specifically for trucks]. Silver reflective on one side and just about fills the entire window- keeps the dash protected and seats- and helps dissapate heat. $15.95 and folds into a tight package cover [included] which fits perfect behind either seat in the pocket. This large version fits trucks. Not specific to Avalanche but works great. And cheap and NOT cardboard and no cutting.

(y) Here are some pics of a set of 4 sunshades (1 for each front window, 2 for the windshield) I picked up from Ebay. The seller was ceebaileys. They are a perfect fit. They actually wedge into place. The ones for the side widows will stay in even with the doors open. You don't have to have the visor down to hold up the windshield pieces. As you can see from the pics they do a good job of blocking the light and really reduce the cab temp while sitting in the sun all day. They came with a bag to store them and a velcro strap connected to one of the large pieces for rolling them up. I paid about $40 bucks for them. For that price I was really impressed. (y)

I have this winshield shade also, in fact won the eBay auction about a week ago and just remembered to put it in the AV the other day. Good fit on the front except my drivers panel is a little bit wider and I had to bend the corner near the mirror but overall fit and finish is excellent. Side windows are a plus and fit well (y)

It's been a while since this was last discussed, does anyone have recent recommendations regarding windshield sunshades?

I just ordered the eclipse one and waiting for it to arrive.  Hope I didn't waste my money.  Right now I am using a cheap Kragen, $6 sunshade.  I bought the Jumbo size and it is way too big but gets the job done for the moment.  Good luck.
