Winter Tires Question

This may be a bit early to talk about winter since it's not even Halloween yet, but here is the question:

Any one ever thought about having some sort of winter tires for the AV? The rolling stocks look impressive though but can they handle the snow and ice?

Suggestions?

I don't know about you, but I use big, bad cleated mud tires with tungsten-carbide studs in the winter. No reason to bend a beautiful Avalanche because of wimpy soccer-mom tires.

The Wrangler AT/Ss are actually very good in the snow. My previous truck came with Goodyear MTs (mud terains) and they were only good for mud and deep snow (really well in 12 inches or more). I later changed to the AT/Ss and was very pleased. On my previous truck I had the AT/Ss in 14-16 inches of snow (while pulling a guy out of the ditch!) and was surprised. Almost as well as the MTs. The AT/Ss are much better in small amounts of snow, rain, and dry than the MTs were. I was very happy to see the Z71 come with the AT/Ss. Unless you are going off roading in the mud or deep snow the stock AT/Ss should work well.

I took the stock tires into 2' soft virgin powder up at Jasper last winter and had no problem pushing the snow. Stocks seem to ride slushy wet snow without noticeable problems, no slip and slide. Acceptable traction on icy roads as well.
My AV will see lots of snow this winter. I spend most of the winter in 4AWD. I do not personally see the necessity of changing the stock tires.

And what is this SNOW you speak of?.....I have not seen it for a long time except the movies >:D

We may not get a lot down in the valley but it was falling in the Cascades last night. And that' snow joke. :D

Ok Mr Snow Country checking in:

The stock tires will due just fine. they will get you throught deep snow and stop you just as good.

p.s. Before I start a war, these are my personal comments. All tires are different. some are better than others. Now if you put studs or chains on then all bets are off.

BUT for the AVERAGE person the stock tires will do just fine.

I KNOW, I LIVE IN BUFFALO NY

We know what it is like to snow up here.

SNOW is the little white stuff that comes out of the sky when the temp reaches about 32.

I would love to see some snow here (Kansas) We usually get these AWFUL ICE Storms that leave an inch of Ice on EVERYTHING. It is here for 2 days and then gone. So, if you want to run Studded tires, you have to take them off after 2 days.

Or, we get snow on top of the ice. What a mess. People driving like idiots. Better to stay home.

People drive like idiots no matter where they are or what season it is. No matter where, people always forget how to drive on the first day of a serious snow/ice.

If memory serves me, you are not supposed to put chains on your 1500 AV. Its ok for the 2500, though. I seem to recall it was something about brake lines in the way?!

Growing up in MN, we had two sets of tire - summer and winter. Out here, at least in Western Oregon, people tend to gravitate to all-seasons. There are a few soccor moms riding around with studded tires on their little econo-cars and minivans.

Soon after I bought my Avalanche, I picked up a set of stock rims on ebay. I mounted a set of 265/75/16 Dayton Timberline LT tires I had left ove from my old Sport Trac. They were okay in the snow, but I wanted better traction and handling. I recently bought a set of Cooper Discover M+S tires in the stock size of 265/70/16 (I have the standard 4X4, non Z71). For less than $100 per tire mounted and balanced, these tires rule! I've had them up in the mountains just east of Pittsburgh, and played in 12+ inches of snow. I really can't say enouh good things about these tires. Anyone looking for a dedicated snow tire that is quiet and smoothe on the highay, but really eat up the whites stuff, should check them out.

I agree - stock is fine. I went down a mud road with 8" of snow. 4 wheel low and it just walked down the hill.
