Happy Easter to everyone.

I am looking for some help on removing the wiper arm so I can spray paint them CHROME.

I replaced the stock blades to chrome ones and now would like to paint the arms.

I looked under the cap and all that is there is a nut. I thought that I could just remove the nut and it would pop right off and then I could paint it but of course it wasn't just that easy. :8: I tried prying slightly but nothing. :7:

Is there some trick to this or am I doing something WRONG.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Here are a couple pics of what I am talking about.

There is tension on the stud from the wiper arm spring. Most Gm`s have a hole so that you could lift the arm off the windshield, insert nail, pin, heavy paper clip, what ever fits and when you let go of the arm the tension is now off the stud and the arm should lift off with screwdriver under the arm near stud with a twist. GM also makes a wiper arm pulling tool but I never needed it.

Mike thanks very much for the quick reply.

 comming your way.

I am going out to see if I can find that spot to releave the tension. If not I'll get back.

Thanks Again,
RON

I was unable to find anything to push in to release the tension of the arm.

Any other Idea's ???

RON

I went out to check and although there is a hole where the swivel joint is, it does not accept a pin to remove tension :8:. I just looked in service manual and it states to use a battery terminal puller to remove it. They are usally pretty cheap and auto stores have them near the battery terminal section.

Mike

Thanks Mike,

I f I wasn't so lazy I sould have lookied in the manual first.

I will check now and take a run to the auto store.

Thanks again.

RON

Well went to the auto parts store and got the puller.

After using a lot of tourq on it, it still wouldn't bulg. Don't want to break anything :8:

Oh well maybe I'll ask a dealer tomorrow. :6:

Just bringing this back to the top.

I am still looking for help with this.

Please anyone.

Best I can do for ya is look when I get to work tomorrow. I'll walk over to where they put them on at to see if there is any trick to getting them off.

I'll let you know.

If you don't have the correct tool, or the experience to remove the arms, before spending the $$$ for the tool, take your AV to a good glass shop, and ask them to remove the wipers for you. They have all the tools, and expertise since wipers need to be removed to install windshields. Most would do it as a customer service, or charge just a few bucks.

By the way, did I see you guys at the "Big E" sport show in February. I was there with a booth display, and noticed a few pretty sharp AV's in the parking lot.

I bought the battery terminal pullers ($3) but did not work.

I did not want to break anything.

I might try stopping at an autoglass place to see if they know how to pull the wipers off.

I was going to go to the dealer and ask them but I'm not sure if they would tell me and probably want to charge $50 to pull them themselves.

Might have.

I live in Springfield and I was there.

Wiper arm is press fit onto a tapered spline shaft. The inside of the arm is smooth to begin with and the tightening of the nut presses the smooth surface into the spline on the shaft forming the spline in the arm.

Removing the nut, lifting the wiper blade off the glass and then rocking the arm should be enough to break it loose. Pull and push the arm toward and away from the glass until she breaks free. There is nothing else holding it on.

Thanks for that tid bit. I knew it looked to be much more complicated, but it seemed like it had to be that simple. ;)

I was always pulling the wipers off my 92 Yukon and it was just a clip and slip. (y)

This looked much more difficult.

(The CTS is doing just great)

Thank you.
I have tried using a puller but even after useing quit a lot of pressurer it still would not give. That is why I stopped.

When it stops raining I will try it again.

RON

I did take a walk today and 805 is absolutely right. The shaft is tapered , so when the nut is tightened the fit gets quite snug. Using the puller while slightly tapping on it with a small hammer might work. At the plant, they pull and rock them back and forth, that usually works also.

NO PULLERS!!!!! :E:

I had the tension spring come off my wiper and had to redo it, after taking the nut off, take the tension off the arm, by leaning the wiper arm off the windshield, and it should come right off! At least thats what i remember. That should do the trick!
;D

Thanks guys.

I will try tomorrow to pull them off without the pullers.

I new someone out there must have done this before.

RON

Well I have tried and tried again and STILL can not get these darn wipper arms OFF. :8: :8:

I will wait untill I can find someone who has done this or until I get some more advise.

I really want to get these off to paint them. :6:

Thanks to everyone who helped. (y)

I put 'em on Silverado/Sierra but never tried to pull one off, I'd just yank real hard and hope I didn't break it. Of course at work I wouldn't have to pay for a new one, I'd be more careful on my own truck as they would seriously frown on me taking home any parts.

I have tried but I am afraid of breaking something, which with my luck usally happens.
