03 Avalanche has a rear audio control package that allows back seat passengers to acess the radio or CD (whichever is not in use by driver) using wired headphones. Is there a way to make the wired headphones a wireless system? Can the wired headphone output jack be wired into a wireless out put jack/transmitter? (Thoughts)

lots of sources for wireless headphones and the accompanying infrared transmitter, I happen to have Myron & Davis wireless headphones that work with my M&D screens (they have an infrared transmitter built in) but M&D also sells the little infrared transmitter seperately (search wireless headphoes and you will see that more than a few manufacturers do likewise) - you would need to locate your audio out and tie into that for this purpose.

Can someone confirm that the stock rearseat headphone wireless transmitters for the Avalanche are IR vs RF? And if IR, what channel? I have a set of wireless headphones from an 03'. I would like to use these headphones, but need to get a matching transmitter.

IR. Not sure what 'channel' as most single zone ir systems use the same frequencies. It would be difficult to pipe the wired outputs to your existing system. HOwever, you could get a new ir emitter and run both inputs into it without too much trouble.

Kodiakz/and anyothers:

I was thinking of splicing into my rearseat entainment unit headphone jack wiring and adding an IR transmittter. That way my back seat passengers (Kids) can use the rearseat radio. etc without having to use wired headphones which always get yanked and broken. I have a set of 03' Avalanche wireless headsets that are for use with a Avalanche overhead DVD system. I want to use these headsets but for the rear seat entainment system which is accessed by standard headphone jacks. I "think" I just need to open the rearseat console (has anyone done this?), splice the headphonejack wiring as this is audio out and pigtail a set of wires to a IR transmitter. Then add a power line to the IR transmitter and mount the IR transmitter somewhere in the vehicle. My concerns are:

1) Can I buy just any IR transmitter and have it work with the headphones I have?

2) Is the wiring really that simple?

3) Where to mount IR transmitter discreetly? (I ideally do not want to remove headliner as I have never done this)

4) Siting requirements of an IR transmitter (line of sight)?

Thanks for your input.

Any thoughts (bump)

If I understand the question you?re asking. I would go with RF and just put a right angle extension wire in so that you can plug into the stock plug and keep the wires out of the way. You could put the transmitter under one of the seats so it would be out of the way too. I think this would be easier than using IR. Also you should be able to find a set of headphones that would work with one transmitter. I believe that I have seen headphone packages that come this way. Hope this helps.
