XM/NAV/DVD System

I just had the system installed in my AV today.. My son had to pick up my truck for me as ?I had to catch a boat to go to work..(I work on an Island and won't be home until Sat or Sunday). I have the 6400CD and the AVIC 90 DVD. I have the instructions book here at work with me and it also came with a DVD ?"short guide to Pioneer navigation.. Have not looked at it yet. This is the best system that I have seen.

I installed this system about 7 weeks ago and I have enjoyed it completely. I emailed Jewvalanche with my take on the system a couple of days ago. He's probably still reading, it was a long boring email but I hope it was informative. Hey Jewvalanche I voted for you to stay with us at the Fan Club and keep us entertained.

Aegis you did the right thing by bringing the books with you. I have re-read the operating manual on this system at least 10 times and everytime I find something new that this system can do. I think half the fun is finding the new things. Read then reread the manuals and even the little manual sheet with the steering wheel remote. ? One of the small things to change that made a big difference to me was reprogramming the steering wheel remote so that when you push a button it activates the voice control commands. I suggest learning the voice control commands also but I don't think the book was very informative on that point. Hey Aegis if you email me I can tell you how to make certain that your installer didn't hook your system up illegally. A lot of the installers hook it up illegally because it allows you to see movies on the monitor screen and it allows you to program settings in your navigation system when driving down the road. I know some installer that just hook it up illegally because it easier to install that way. There is no shame in this world. ?
If anyone knows what the CUE system that Pioneer talks about for this unit please post it. I doubt if CUE is nationwide but how many of the cities in the US has it. More importantly how many of the Cities in Texas and surrounding States, where I normally travel. The book talks about Traffic reports, Weather and News. I think Weather and News is free according to the book. You just need a receiver but Traffic requires a monthly fee?

I forgot to mention that because of the gyro motion sensor thingy devise (I used the technical name) inside the navigation unit, the Navigation din mount must be with-in 30 degrees of a flat horizontal mounting. It really isn't a problem with the bucket seats because of the center consoles cubby holes (I think anyway). I however liked the bench seats and now have a problem mounting the Nav Din on my Dash. Right now I'm using a universal mount bolted at a 60 degree angle on my lower dash panel (below 3 plug power strip). At a 60 degree mount the gyro doesn't really work and the GPS has to do most of the work in deciding where I am located. Usually this job is shared between the GPS, gyro, and speed sensor data (OK my wife does a pretty good job of keeping up with me also). I'm considering getting a used front portion of a center console unit, the part with the cubby holes, but that still leaves a big hole where the rest of the center console would normally have connected. Maybe I could build a front panel on that part of the console and mount the Nav Din there. I would still have the cubby holes for other mods later on. If I knew the part #'s for the parts that make up this front console in a gray pewter color I might even order new. I bet DeLillo's has a really reasonable price available for these parts. OK its my dream don't wake me up.

I sas the notes on CUE and have never heard of it either. Pioneer does not show anything on it on their web site or catalog that I have seen. My navigation unit is mounted under the center of the rear seat. I changed to the 6400CD as the head unit. I bought them separately a few months apart. I now do not need the Pioneer remote head controller for XM radio since the 6400 is XM ready. I already have a dvd system in the truck and do not want to use the 6400 or the nav unit for dvd. I wanted each system be separate. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Ok Aegis,
I think I understand what your saying. You have the AVHP 6400 CD as your monitor head. Most all your other pieces should plug into this unit. The AVIC 90 Nav unit should be hooked up via a 26 pair cable (I think) except for the power, reverse sensor and speed sensor wires.
The small remote I am talking about comes with the Nav SYS 900 package which is basically what you have short maybe a few remotes. With the complete system you get 3 remotes. The neat thing about this set up is you could now play one movie for the kids and if you use the AVIC 90 you could play another movie if emergency brake is set up front for the adults or at least have navigation active. If your interested in the back-up Cameras bikeymoy seems to have a good camera to use for this unit. Be certain to get a camera with a reverse or mirror image capability as the monitor cannot change it perspective to mirror image. Be certain to have your screen come up on manual only or it will hit your gear shifter. If you have any questions ask away.

I'll be home tomorrow and will take a picture of my install and post it. I am really anxious to get home and play with my new toy.

I just finished the email I got from Bjkirk. LOL ?Talk about a wealth of info. I did send a respose to BJ. I'm looking foward for the install pics. OI need this system!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Aegis,
The install looks great. Have you had a chance to play a DVD yet on it? How do you think the radio sounds compared to the Original HU. I really liked the Pioneer much better, I ran mine directly through the original amplifier and it still sounded great. I initially had a hard time with my voice commands, I didn't think the manual really did a good job explaining all the choices. With out the voice commands it was much harder Navigating from one source function to the other. Now that I got my presets radio staions in its easy to change radio stations using voice while still, using the Nav screen. I really like the feature where you register your own names for locations. I thought I was being clever when I named my Ex-Wifes house the dungeon. Until I realized, when I told my system to take me to the dungeon I really was about to be tortured. :C:
I think I mentioned it before the steering wheel remote can be programmed so that you press a button to access the voice command system.

Hello Miles,

We have the Alpine system (from Honda) in our minivan. It was much easier initially for us to use than the Pioneer. The touch screen is a great addition and also something missing from the Pioneer. The Pioneer does offer a lot more other gadgets though for a lot less money so I went the Pioneer route but the Alpine was certainly looked at. To much money for my empty pockets. Can you please do me a favor and tell me how many streets show up for Tyler Texas. The 2000 map DVD didn't offer but 7 or 8 streets. The website still indicates that Tyler hasn't been updated yet. My wife gets lost easily and I would get her a new DVD map if it would help.
I always hated driving out of town and getting lost before. Missing your turn off or generally worrying if you are going in the right direction. People can say whatever they want about any of these systems being expensive, they a absolutely worth the money. I now travel stress free. Who need Airlines anymore. With all the hassle now, I just drive, if it less than 6 hours away. I guess the way the Avalanche drives may have something to do with it also. Navigation will always be the first Mod I'll make on any new vehicle I buy.

I have not tried a DVD in yet. I have a separate dvd player and two additional screens. 1 screen for the nav system and the other two for dvd's. I also have not tried the voice command for the nav yet. I also have a subwoofer and amp. The voice on the nav is VERY loud I have not found a way to turn the nav volume down. Are you aware of a way to do it?? The XM radio sounds great , better now that I don't use the modulator the 6400 is xm compatible.

Gary

Hello Aegis,
You have a choice of male or female voice, you get to that change through the regular "settings" screen under Hardware I think. The Nav Volume is adjustable and that I think is off of initial Setting. I'm working without my Manual and haven't looked at it in nearly four weeks but I do remember for sure it is adjustable. Sounds like you got a full system dropped in. I've said it before this system has a ton of things it can do. Unfortunately that also means the owners manual is long and sometimes difficult to read. I wish someone would tell me if the CUE system is operational any where in the USA.

If you can find a way to turn down the volume on the nav system let me know, so far I have not figured out a way to do it.

Hello Aegis,
I believe it is on page 130 of your Operation Manual but I have attached a snap shot of the page. It occurred to me that you may need to put your AV parking brake on to access the Hardware menu on your settings. This is a safety feature to prevent people from driving down the road and adjusting their settings. Hope this helps.

Thanks for checking, I won't be home until Sunday. I'll see if that does it. I must have missed it in the manual.
