Is this an item that can be added as after market?

Anyone have any thoughts as to whether it is wiser to order it with a vehicle, or add it later?

Yes, it can be added later. But, in my opinion, if I were getting a 2003 model AV I would definitely get one with the XM already installed. Let the factory deal with wiring, antenna, ect. In return, you would get the factory look, performance, and warranty.

Yes, it can be added later. I'm looking at a Pioneer unit which looks like it can easily fit in the hole above the CD storage area, where I'm presently storing napkins. Sony also has a unit which mounts on a bracket and plugs in the cigarette lighter, so it can be moved from vehicle to vehicle. Both need a small antenna mounted, similar to a cell phone antenna.

Advantage of an XM-ready radio/CD player is not having to drill and mount the satellite receiver. I was disappointed that my '02 Avalanche did not come with an XM-ready radio.

The display above is mounted with velcro, I also placed a strip at the bottom (below the xm) this is the front DVD screen. I have one on the roof in place of the dome lights. The one in front has a 6 foot cord so it can be placed virtually anywhere. I did not want to have to sit in the rear to watch a movie. The Blaupunkt DVD player is mounted under the driver side rear seat. To the left of the screen you can see the remote sensor to control the player.

See the thread DVD/VCR for photo. I have a 7 inch drop down screen mounted in place of the dome light. I will probably replace the head unit with the Pioneer unit that is the same size as the stock unit next.

I installed the Pioneer headunit and IMO I think it fits perfectly in our trucks. Take a look:

Pionner HeadUnit in AV

Let me know if you have questions. ;D

The install looks great. I think I am going to install a Pioneer head unit also. They make one that is the same size at the factory unit.

The one is the picture I posted is the only one they offer that is the same size as the factory unit. They have 2 models that look the same but one has more features.

Carrerarod,

Is that a DEH P47 ??

That will be my next addition.

Actually it's the P77. His big brother. The main differences are the P77 has 3 sets of PreAmp outputs including a subwoofer output which was important to me since I planned on installing a Class D amp for my sub and it also comes with a wireless remote.

The unit fits great and really blends in with the dark interior.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hmmmm,, I am not familiar with a P77 I'll check into it. I already have an amp and 10 inch sub. I have not changed the speakers yet.May do the rears first and the new head unit. I willl check the spec's on the P 77 Please let me know if there is anything else I need to consider before I order. I can buy Pioneer Electronics at employee price. It can take several weeks to get certain items.

Go to Crutchfields website and pull both up for a side by side comparison. You might want the P77 since it has preamp outs just for your sub amp.

As mentioned by other club members, yes you can add the XM Radio after-the-fact. I've been considering adding one; however I'm not a fan of the XM antennas. I'm hoping sometime soon they will reduce in size and the physical appearance will improve.

Just my opinion.

I bought my XM stuff today at Circuit City. Which is the place to go if your thinkin about an XM.They offer the Terk SR2 ant.,which has a $30.00 rebate till the end of July,a $50.00 instant rebate on the Sony sat. recv'er and XM has a rebate for the rest of the month of $50.00 and Circuit City is giving free install. But after seeing how easy it looks to install I'll do it my self. The only spot for the sony recv'er I can see is on top of the rear a/c ducts under the center console compartments which will be cool cause its out of site and the connections will be easy access.

Later,Paul

Carrerarod,

I checked out the P77 you are right I think I like it better thant the P47. I think I will go for it. And the OS-1 for the Onstar.

No problem. Plus I like have a remote for the headunit and it only comes with the P77.

Let me know if you need help. I wired mine with the OS-1 and aftermarket speakers and amplifiers.

Since XM Radio is currently posting a loss and Sirius radio is being rolled out nationwide, look for deals to be continued in the future.

I thought I saw a thread where a guy showed the mounting of the console where the two compartments are in the front. Can you point me in the right direction. Its where I'm putting my Sony xm recv'er so this is kinda related to this post.

I got XM intalled today and alot of other A/V goodies. I haven't got to play it very much yet, but I'm gonna go on a long drive tomorrow and test it out. But so far....I really like it.

Inquiring minds would like some more detail ;D

Has anyone found any XM antennas that dont look like crap on the AV, thats the only thing stoping me from putting it in, dont want to drill into my roof.

The TERK antenna and the Pioneer are attached with adhesive, no drilling. I have the Terk mounted on the roof center of windshield. Some have put them on the rear center close to the sail.
