The transmission dipstick tube shouldn't be this loose, right? Where is the bracket located that holds it? I don't see a it from above or below, but I must be overlooking it..

I'm chasing a minor rattle noise..

Bump.. I know it has only been 2 days, but is anyone else's transmission dipstick this loose? Here is a video of mine https://i.imgur.com/vVKCksu.mp4

Although I do not have any direct experience with the mounting of the transmission dipstick tube, a quick Google search for the part show the tube has a mounting tab that one could assume possibly attaches in the area of the upper bell housing.

Perhaps either that tab has broken off of the tube or the bolt used to secure the tab has gone missing.

Those would be my guesses.

Maybe put the truck up on a lift and have a look or use an endoscope camera to look from the top down.

Thanks! I knew it couldn't be normal but wanted confirmation. Great excuse to break out the endoscope

Come to find out after researching it a bit, the 2010 & 2011 models were under a transmission dipstick recall. This is almost certainly my rattle! I'll search again tonight but the mounting tab must be missing on mine.

Recall info:

Subject: 12138 ? Transmission Dipstick Tube Fracture

Models:
2010-2011 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT
2010-2011 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe
2010-2011 GMC Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL

Equipped with Active Fuel Management

*******THIS PROGRAM IS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOVEMBER 30, 2014.*******

Condition:
Certain 2010 and 2011 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles, equipped with Active Fuel Management, may have a condition in which normal engine vibration while in AFM mode may cause the transmission dipstick tube to fatigue and fracture. If this occurs, it could cause a tick or rattle noise from the front of the vehicle.

Correction:
Dealers are to inspect the transmission dipstick tube for a fracture and replace it if necessary. If no fracture is found, dealers are to install a foam sleeve around the tube to absorb the vibration.

Parts Information:
Parts required to complete this program are to be obtained from General Motors Customer Care and Aftersales (GMCC&A).

Parts Ordering Information ? For US & Canada Dealers Important: Involved dealers will receive RIM "Service Campaign" Stocking Policy Proposals for the transmission filler tube, P/N 24260606, based on their past sales on this part. The RIM proposals will be scheduled to begin October 25, 2012. Once the policy is approved, RIM will push this additional stock accordingly. Due to the predicted low failure rate we strongly encourage that you allow RIM to manage your inventory on P/N 24260606. Canadian dealers will not receive a special stocking policy but are also encouraged to have RIM manage their inventory.

Fixed:
The bracket was broken off the dipstick tube as you expected.

Just in case it helps anyone else... I removed the old and fed the new tube from the bottom, with only a few inches of lift (drove on top of two 2x6 boards). Once the new tube is snaked up to it's position, you have to force/bend the last 2 inches up to get the bottom of dipstick tube up high enough to feed into the transmission. Reuse the green o-ring / grommet, as the new dipstick does not come with one. Then one bolt onto the bell housing and you're done.

DId yuo add the foam thing mentioned in the TSB to fix the issue?

The foam comes already attached to the new dipstick. If you have a 2010-2011 and the dipstick is still in one piece, you may wish to add an insulator near the top where the dipstick bumps the rear coil pack & valve cover area.

New part was only $10. Picture can be seen on the amazon link below
