I'm just wondering if anyone has tried one and how well do they work.

Here is a example

Do have a lot of play between the receiver and ball mount?

I use the Convert-A-Ball, it fits pretty tight just enough to let it move back and forth to cushion the load during acceleration and deceleration.

My old ball mount had a little play so I wrapped with a layer or two (as needed) to fill the gap and insulate between the two.

That's interesting Randy.

There is a little play in my front hitch which I want  to mount a set of driving lights to, I just don't want them bouncing around all over the place.

Just using them for highway driving only and can be easily removed

I just made a shim. It took a little sanding on the shim to make it easy to install a ball mount or other device but tight enough to keep it from rattling.

Thanks that is another idea.

Don't know how much accessibility you have on your front hitch. You could drill the hitch, weld a nut on.
With a locking nut on the bolt run it in to take up the slack. I've done this for my flat beds that do all kinds of banging in the fields.
