Important: The gears between the ignition switch and the lock cylinder housing must be in the correct position. Failure to do so will cause a misalignment of the gears in the ignition switch and the lock cylinder housing, which may result in a NO START or BATTERY DRAIN.

  1. Verify the alignment of the gear (1) in the ignition switch (2). If gear (1) is not in position shown, turn gear in ignition switch (2) until you reach the correct position.

Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle 2002 Referenced

Removal Procedure

Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:
        ? Air bag deployment
        ? Personal injury
        ? Unnecessary SIR system repairs
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
? Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
? If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to: Disabling the SIR.
  2. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  3. Remove the tilt lever from steering column. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .

Important: You must check for 2 pan head tapping screws (1) in the lower trim before removal.

  4. If necessary remove the pan head tapping screws (1) that retain the lower steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  5. If no screws are present, gently unsnap the lower trim cover from the upper trim cover.

  6. Tilt the trim cover down and slide it back in order to disengage the locking tabs.
  7. Remove the lower steering column trim cover.

  1. Install the upper steering column trim cover (2).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  2. If necessary, install the screw that retains the upper steering column trim cover to the steering column.

     Tighten
Tighten the upper steering column trim cover retaining screws to 1.5 N?m (13 lb in).
