As most of you know, our esteemed member ChevyThunder will be heading to San Diego and on out to sea (unfortunately being in the Navy does that to ya), leaving Omaha in November . With that in mind, we will be having a cruise / GTG on October 22 October 29?? as a farewell party .
Note: See ChevyThunder's posting from 10/20 regarding needing to change the date! Sorry to say, it looks like the 29th probably isn't going to work out
Here's the plans:
Date: Saturday,October 22, 2005 new tentative date: Oct. 29th
Meet Location & Time: 1:00pm, Western Historic Trails Center[/b]
Council Bluffs, IA at the 24th Street Exit off I-80. Head south one block to the entrance and turn right. It's a long, one-way one-lane driveway (about 1/4 mile) to the west to the parking lot of the trails center. Early arrivals can tour the Trails Center and its exhibits; we'll meet up in the modest-sized parking lot.
(Note to Chris and other out-of-towners - the gas stations at the 24th St. exit typically have about the cheapest gas in the Omaha metro area)
Cruise To: DeSoto Bend Wildlife Refuge
We'll enjoy the fall colors as we cruise up SR-183 toward Missouri Valley, following along the edge of the famous Loess Hills. A couple of surprise stops enroute will allow for photo opportunities. If time permits, we may loop up US-30 to Logan, then across SR-127 toward Mondamin and then back south on SR-183 before heading west to DeSoto Bend Wildlife Refuge. At the refuge, they have an interesting museum exhibit on the recovered contents of the 1800's steamboat Bertrand that sank on the Missouri River at DeSoto Bend (http://www.fws.gov/refuges/generalInterest/steamBoatBertrand.html). Admission to the refuge is $3 per car, I'm told.
Dinner: Gurney's in Missouri Valley
After our time at the wildlife refuge, we'll drive back to Gurney's restaurant in Missouri Valley for dinner.
Total cruise mileage estimated at either 50 or 75 miles, depending on whether we include the loop via Logan.
If you have an FRS radio, bring that along. Chris, do you still have your flag holder?
Attendees:
ChevyThunder (whew, glad he could make it!)
