Explain what you mean by "SEM coated".

Is it a process that turns a mistreated '02 AV into what appears to be a new '03 ???

Sik Av, Do u live in Calgary? Where did u get the AV @ an auction? If that is the same AV WOW . I don't know if everyone here knows what u mean by FBI, I used to live in Lethbridge were we had lots!

I like that look. Please let us know what products from SEM you used.

I could spend that $100!

Jamie

Come now guys. Just because it needs a wash and has a spare tire on the front doesn;t mean it is mistreated :)

I am very interested in the $90 spent as well. Can you give more deatils and maybe closeup pictures? Looks really good in those pictures. Wonder what it would look like in White.

Looks great, do you use Sure-Coat?? Will it wash off? More details please.

If this works we can all look like '03s.

I was planning on having the entire truck and cladding painted for SEMA next week but the timeline is too tight so I tried the SEM product and it looks great! Ill see how it holds up over the next few weeks... I heard its tough. I keep you posted...

The product I used is SEM Color Coat Semi Gloss Black. Follow link and detail below. I can get the exact product number if someone wants it?

www.semproducts.com COLOR COAT is an elastomeric coating formulated to match, restore or change color on most vinyl surfaces, flexible and rigid plastics, carpet and velour. COLOR COAT is a fade-resistant, flexible and permanent coating. COLOR COAT is not a dye.

Check out the application process...

You mentioned SEMA, is your Avy going to be in the show? If so, let me know where and I'll stop by.

Boy it looks like a lot of work, but the outcome seems well worth the effort.

Is there any bigger quality pictures available so we can see the up close and personal details?

Making me think seriously about the mod....

Is this possible!!!

Painted cladding without taking it off, and for only $100!!

What happend to sanding...primer...sanding...primer...paint...sanding...paint...sanding...clearcoat...???

Is it possible to to have matching cladding this easily?

I believe SIK AV did all the spraying himself - the $100 is cost of materials.

I think it looks great, I am going to try to find a shop near me and get an estimate.

hey sik av,

very nice mod indeed... (y) i'm sure that i, as well as all the other members are interested in doing this, are very tuned in and would like as much detail as possible. ?granted, most of us would probabaly go to a paint specialist for the actual labor, unless the process seems simple enough for the average mechanic to do. ?

this gives a chance for us 02's that want to update their cladding to the '03 style, to do so without having to shell out a fortune.

i'd be very interested in prep work, reference numbers for the paint, and any other tips you may have. ?again, any info is greatly appreciated.

p.s. i would like to recommend that the moderators pin this one up... this is a :0:

Doh! It was painted!

As the cladding wasn't sanded how is the texture after it was painted? ?

After the show could you drive down a few gravel roads and let us know how the paint holds up? (Just Kidding ;)) ? Good Luck with the show.

What I'll do is take some close ups of the cladding/plastic and post them this weekend. After it was sprayed it looks identical to the grey... just black. No extra thickness to the texture or runs! Gotta run. More later.. I think the flash time on this coating is 5 minute! Fast, so it has alot of MEK(or something like it) in it.

I went the traditional route and sanded and primed and sanded and primed and wet sanded and painted and waited........ 3 weeks later its finally done

That looks sweet Silk

I decide to call SEM today because I needed some paint that matched the cladding color of an 02 - after a little disucssion they can me the product # and I found a local dealer.

My Av is dirty, and I decided to try the product in the parking lot of the dealer and it is a perfect match and dried real fast.

I am impressed with SEM's products - your AV looks real good.

hey blueruck,

did you mean '03? or were you doing a repair? btw, what was the cost?

Vortek - I meant the 02 - I have a new metal bumper coming and the pic I was sent of the final bumper didn't look like the right color - could of been the lighting, the photo scan or the photo enhancements. So I wanted to ensure if it was not quite right I had the right color on hand.

Thus I called SEM and talked to their tech support - really good guys. They had match for the 02 cladding and I ran to Denver and bought 4 spray cans of their bumper spray (SEM product # is 39583). The cans were $8 each. SEM figured I could do the bumper with 2 cans, but I didn't want to take a chance. Plus I can refresh my cladding color in the future if I want :)

What is the consensous on how well this new "express" method will hold up? No sanding, no primer, no coat after coat after coat...
I'm just boggled :2:
Why has everyone been putting some much work and money into painting the cladding, if it was this simple?
The $1300+ is what had kept me away from getting my cladding painted to match, but along comes a miracle!

I would have to say the more expensive route does look way better and is more permanant. I also dont know yet know how well the SEM product will hold up. I would suggst using a Adhesion Promoter before applying the SEM. It is one extra step but may ensure a better bond by opening up the pores on the plastic. I did not use the Adhesion Promoter because I thought I was going to go smooth in a few weeks anyways, but now it looks so good I may just leave it!

I attached a close up of the rear cladding. As you can see it appears to have the same texture as before, just black now. I'm still in shock at how ca$h it looks!

It looks very good. I am anxious to hear how t looks and holds up down the road!

I doesn't look that bad from the pictures, but an up close and personal view would be the best way to see it.

That Av looked to be in pretty bad shape, excellent before and after shots. On a side note, how hard was it to remove the sun visor from the roof?

Sik Av, Are you in the Calgary area??? Would really like to take a look at the finished product. That poor thing looked to have taken a beating. Hope they were not too hard on the engine. Was it from up Wetaskiwin way??
