Rallying Points For The National Meet

I understand what you mean CoAvZ71 - it is kinda out of my way also for a direct shot. It will be very hard to pick a spot where someone will not have to go out of their way some in order to get a large group together - the best bet to unite the largest number will be to pick a point just outside Rapid city from each direction and plan a date and time. I plan on going up early so unless others are planning to volunteer and go early as well, I will probably be alone most of the way - although I will probably pick up a friend or 2 along the way - say in Dallas and Memphis! ;)

Fearless Leader...Got Salt Lake City, UT. on your list?
Just checkin. :2:

I'm working on more - the hotels on the east side of Salt Lake City on I-80 are slim pickings and get expensive as you head east to Park City. Bottomline, having problems finding a property.

Sadly Fargo, North Dakota is having some huge wrestling competition so folks are going to be on their own if they are coming north from Canada.

I should have Salt Lake City tomorrow.

Got a block of rooms at the Super 8 in Midvale, Utah off Interstate 215.

On the comment on I-76 east of Denver - it has to be the ugliest, most awful stretch of desolate interstate in North America. I mean AWFUL. I was left shocked at how ugly eastern Colorado was. Sorry if I offended anyone but I agree, western Nebraska is VASTLY nicer looking that eastern Colorado.

LOL, I'm not offended >:D. It is terrible out there. I have probably been on that entire 200 mile stretch 15 times :D:. When people think of Colorado, they think of the mountains and forget all about what is out on the plains. That makes me wonder, how many people have ever gone to Colorado and turned around looking at how disappointing I76 is >:D?

As my cousin once said, I-76 makes Wyoming look like a national park :D.

I would agree that for those coming up from Texas or other southern points, the easiest, probably fastest although certainly not the shortest route would be coming up I29 from KC, up to Sioux Falls and then take I90 straight across SD. Granted, it's not very scenic but then there's not much to slow you down so it is possible to make pretty reasonable time going this way. Having driven from Omaha to the Black Hills a couple of times before I do know some reasonably scenic routes, but they all suffer from the drawback of being longer in travel time due to being two-lane highways that go through all the small towns (and believe me, most in central and western Nebraska are small!). From the Omaha area there is no faster way to the Black Hills than I29/I90 via Sioux Falls.

If you do wind up staying at the Red Lion let me know, we could possibly meet for dinner or something, even if I'm not planning on driving up until Monday. If you are coming up via the Salina - York - Omaha route, staying at the Red Lion makes sense. If you are coming up via I29 from KC then you may want to check out some motels in the Council Bluffs area, possibly at the Lake Manawa exit, because coming this way, it adds about 15 extra miles to drive in to the Red Lion in Omaha vs staying over in Iowa near I29. Another possibility would be to check out motels in Missouri Valley, IA, located just about 20 miles north of Council Bluffs right on I29. It's possible the ones there may be a bit cheaper.

Hey TxAVFan, any further thoughts on this? I drove past Mo. Valley, IA this weekend - there are two motels there, a Days Inn and a Super 8. I don't know about rates but I'd bet you can beat the Omaha rate of that Red Lion Inn. Plus, as I mentioned, if anybody is planning on using the I-29 / I-90 route via Sioux Falls, then Mo. Valley is a great place because nobody has to backtrack or go out of their way no matter what direction they arrive from in the Omaha area.

Right now I am sticking with the original plan - staying at the Red Lion probably I will get in touch when I come through - Edward K and maybe a few more will meet me there and we can get together for dinner with ya (y) ;)

well my plans to attend have just become about as solid as they can be....got final approval from the boss for the time off ;D

however, my travel plans there are still very much TBD

I am pretty sure I am heading out of NC friday evening (18th) heading for AK. I have some good friends in Conway so I'll probably stop in to see them for a little while. The next steps are a total mystery. I might be heading to OK to pick up my best friend and then up, or from AK head towards SD directly. But I plan to arrive in SD on sunday(20th) to help setup/ride around a bit...maybe up to sturgis.

Is anyone leaving from AK or OK on the 19th/20th or meeting up along one of those routes on those days?

My plans are similar to yours except for leaving from Texas Friday night. We can meet up if you want I plan on meeting a group at the Red Lion Inn in Omaha on Saturday evening. Let me know your route from AK and maybe we can cruise into SD together - the bigger the group the better. (y) :D ;D

Hey that's cool with me, the Red Lion is a whole lot closer to my house than Mo. Valley is anyway. When time gets closer we'll arrange a meet time that Sat. evening.
