Title: Are You One Of The exclusive Av (2500) Owners
Post by: Magic Mtn Dan on July 1, 2003, 06:43:27 AM
Not every Av owner is driving one of the exclusive Avs.  I don't know the percentage but I'd like to find out...

So, are you one of the exclusive Av owners?  If you're not driving a 2500 then you're not one of the few, the proud and the fortunate.   ;D

If you are a 2500 owner please post here.  Let's get an idea of who and how many of us there are.  Besides we've got some things we can talk about without all the others listening in  :4:

Could you maybe change the title to this thread so that it is more accurate and informative as to content. Would save a lot of people time reading.

I do like your way of thinking.
Many are called. Few are chosen  :4:
The best part is having Subaru  people ask what size engine is in my Av and seeing the look on their faces when I say, "It's a 496"  :4: :4:

I have one the earliest 2500's and I can tell you they hand built that monster at the factory - we are indeed, the few, the proud, the owners of the biggest gasoline engine truck in North America :1: :1: :1: and I have the platinum cas card from Chevron to prove it ;D

Well, looks like there's two kinds of people who post on this thread:

1.  2500 owners
2.  1500 owners :4:

We paid more to have the big block and we pay more every time we fill up.  But it's worth it (POWER) and we don't envy any other engine (well, 'cept Jack's whipped and intercooled 8.1L).

And for those of you who think this thread is snobbish, think about this, 2500 owners don't even consider a WBH to be an Avalanche - after all, the big block ain't put into a WBH (not yet anyway).   ;)

Yet another one. Third car in the family so it only has around 11,000 miles on it. Looks like I made a good decision keeping the 86 Honda crx si (35 - 40 miles per gallon).

I was wondering when they release the sales totals on Avalanches what percentage are 2500s?

OK, I get stuck doing these sometimes...

No I'm not talking about $1,000.00 USD per month, I talking about local currency.

The average price for premium unleaded I've paid sice owning the av is $0.96 per litre which comes out to $3.63 Aussie per US Gallon (if that summary even makes sense).

Big Engine... Big Power... Big Gas Tank... Big Gas Bill...

what more do you need to say?

Are we exclusive?  How many of us were dumb/smart enough to buy one of these monsters?  My guess is less than 10% of total AV sales, maybe even 5%

I believe I still have the only 2500 in Scotland, probably in UK. With gas running at about $5 per gallon, I just gotta be mad.

Anyway, If you are going to own a vehicle which is far too big and far too thirsty for Uk roads, I figured I might as well go completely overboard.

God knows what the gas mileage will be when I install the 150hp NX kit!

I guess I will be joining this "exclusive" group tomorrow. After lurking on this site for a couple of months and gathering all sorts of valuable info, I have made my purchase. Tomorrow morning I will be flying to Las Vegas and picking up my new black '03 2500 4x4. By the time I get back home it should be just about through it's break-in period and the mods will begin. (Actually, I was considering a stop at the local parts store to pick up the amber DRL lamps before I even leave.)

This is my first post, but I think that I'll have a lot more to say (ask) beginning this Sunday when I return home with my new AV.  ;D  ;D

I went to fill it up two days ago and the station I stopped at was a prepay type.  I gave the clerk 3 $20's,  the pump stopped at $60.00, and the tank wasn't even full.  I hope the gas price comes down after the holiday weekend.

I'm one of the few, proud, and broke also. I cannot complain about the gas though. I love the HP and would never settle for less. I knew when I bought this beast that I wouldn't be getting many MTG. OH WELL, I just fill it around 1/2 to 3/4 so I can race it. Seems like the less gas, the faster it goes. Could have something to do with the weight of a full tank.

My wife has been driving our beast for the last week or so since our other car is in the shop.  She was a little surprised that it took $62 and a significant time investment to fill up the 38 gallon tank.

The other problem is, and I mentioned this on another thread, is she loves driving the Av.

At least she has good taste.

I've never had a pump cut out on me because of the amount I've put in... but my local servo has just put in new pumps that seem to be more sensitive to fuel backwash and they cut out all the time (flick off requiring you to release and reapply the trigger).  It is nothing for me to spend 10 - 12 minutes refuelling the beast.

Reporting for duty!

Dark Charcoal Metallic, leather, convenience package, 4.10 LSD, most all options except the DVD, roof rack and mud flaps. Yes, I have the tent and the mattress along with the other little B.S. stuff.

I love having big-blocks in my stable, had to have the AV when I found out no other vehicle manufacturer stuffs a 496ci (8.1L) engine in between the fenders of an SUV.

Mods-
I have the latest flowmaster muffler waiting to be installed. Looking for 20" rims and meaty tires to put on , painting the body hardware body color (all of it), tinted the front windows already and still waiting for an ATI pro-charger blower system to be built.

I'm going to SEMA in Nov. so I will check out the latest and greatest for these trucks. Along with my other preferred toys.

I love this truck and despite the gas consumption, I'm still waiting for Bush to hand me my free Iraqi oil and gas card. I can't really complain about gas mileage for this beast. I can run a half a tank of gas for 2 weeks driving it everyday. (mostly highway and little city)

There is no replacement for displacement.  I find a steady diet of 93 octane and blue oval emblems keeps my beast happy and reliable and gives it a nice shiny coat.  When it has too much Japanese she tends to get a little gassy but an easy fix is to find a nice smoked 1500.  Only as a quick fix though.  Not everyday of coarse.  Since I picked her up in January she has gained some weight (mods) but still retains that sleek muscular build that the womens love.  I only wish that my girl took as good care of me as my girl does.  Wait...I'm confused...help...truck talks back...NOOOOOOOO!!!!! :A: :P

They don't really cost that much more.  Compare a 2500 vs a Z71 and you are only looking at a few hundred bucks.

Now gas cost... that is another story.  Only hurts if you drive a lot of miles.

2002 Av Charter Member - about 24000 miles on my av.  using about 2 quarts of oil per 3000 mile change.  No mods.  Have searched the net and priced mods that i think make the most sense.  2500 w/ 8.1L needs a Whipple w/intercooler.  Proficientperformance.com has everyone beat in price and includes shipping.
http://proficientperformance.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=WIP-GM81SI&Category_Code=wip_auto_superchargers_gm_new&Store_Code=PP
I know there is a lot of controversy over whip vs other roots or centrifugal supercharger or turbo.  Paxton sounded good but I don't need an air to water intercooler (not drag racing).  Ken Belle info is pretty sketchy on the web.  Paxton has a three year warranty and Whipple one year.  Whipple is about $300.00 cheaper and has free shipping.

Other mod(s) would be Gibson cat-back system and possibly Gibson headers.  It's funny.Gibson is available cheaper here in Washington at a local shop vs on the net.  Whipple is cheaper by purchasing on the web.

One of my biggest concerns with adding mods is the warranty void.  my local dealership said it would void it.  But whipple and retailers say it can't.  I love this rig and plan to have it for 15 years or so but would like to "Kick it up a notch"!

any and all comments welcome.  Hope to buy mods after first of year. ;D

2002 2500 Indigo Blue, loaded.. Picked it up in October for 24K with 17K miles.  THis is the best truck I have ever driven.  Lots of power, very smooth, great in the mud, great on the snow and fast.. oh did i forget, it looks awsome.

I have owned a 98 Tahoe Z71, and a 89 3500 454SS single cab.  The Avalanche 2500 is the best all around truck that Chevy has made to this day!

I have the Diablo..really impressed. I have not had any custom programming done like alot of others, but I like it. My only downside is that you have to use super unleaded all the time. But worth it. :4:

No diablo here?  what does it do for me, maybe I should have it.  Hey while all of you fortuate 2500 owners are on line.  what do you guys think about this....

I am about to buy some stuff.  first on the list is the wheel spacers for the rears to come out... link... http://www.correctrack.com/

then i want to buy the HD keys to lift the front... link... http://performancelifts.com/cgi-bin/cart/PLC13-2.html

then after that, i will buy some 285's for the stock wheels.. hopefully the HD keys added will stop the rub on 285's in the front

The only person that I know has the spacers are Gandy..he swears by them, I would like them, just don't know if the $$ justifies it.

The key are also something I have wondered about. I was just going to ask someone w/ a 1500 who has swapped out withthe Ford keys if I could buy their old ones. They are supposed to do the same thing. But for that price, I thing I would just buy them. Just have been kind of worried about messing around with the front end. If you do either take some pics and let us know the results, I am very interested in knowing what you find out. :1:

With the Diablo I usally run mine in Tow/haul mode. I think the performance differnce is substantial. I saw two other guys w/ the 8.1 @ the STIGTG, and they both had custom programs made up, and they swear thta it makes a huge difference. I am probably going to stick w/ the stock program Diablo sent beacause I drive mine ALOT. But the performance w/ the Diablo, intake, and exhaust have been amazing. The Diablo is alot better than the Hypertech as it works all the time and not just @WOT, and is alot more adjustable. Hope this helps you out.

I agree for the spacers (350$$) is a lot!!!!

For the ford keys.. the 1500 models keys will not fit out 2500's, its different.  Thats why if you clik the link that i have shown, the part is for GM 2500's only.  Basicly the keys that are on that web site are for HD suspension and will only work on 2500 AV's not the 1500's.  Its prity cheep!  I am alittle worried about using them also, but its a draw between that or cranking the "T" bars up.  Some people say its ok for the "t" bars to crank them, and some say its better to buy the HD keys????? who the hell knows.

I didn't mean those keys in your link will fit both. I meant someone w/ a 1500 who has installed the Ford keys. If you take their stock 1500 keys and install them on the 2500 it will lift the 2500 the same as the ones in your link. That seems to be a fairly cheap mod that would make a difference. Depending on install and alignment. Good luck and let us know.

"That's a rare bird ya got there partner!" - Tech at dealership re: 2500 Avy in for servicing

After realizing that the rear end in the 1500 Avalanche was the same as my Chevy S-10 ZR2 compact truck, I knew I had to get the 2500!  The larger gas tank, better rear suspension, stronger wheels, additional capacity, etc... was just icing on the cake.  Plus, now when I tow anything I'm so not worried about straining my truck (at all).  I can honestly say that I didn't notice a price difference as well.  Plus the mags said it was actuall faster through the slalom course than a 1500!   :A:  :B: ;D

I have 50000 on the truck and 12000 on the new motor, this motor so far only shows me check oil level at 3000 miles after an oil change which I can live with.  The first motor the check oil level light would come on after 1500 miles.  Even with that this truck is and does every thing I need it too.

Happy AVing,

I have both. a 1500, and an 04 2500. I bought the 2500 for plowing . I've found that if you take it easy and not lead foot it, the gas costs run about the same as my 1500. the fuel costs are not burning a hole in my pocket. the engine sounds sounds great to, real mean !

:D...... Well guys, add one more to the list of 2500 owner.   Bought my truck back in Jan.03 and love'n every moment of it. 2500HD 4X4 fully loaded.

By the way. See that every one is kind of spending alittle over $50 on gas. Same here and I would like to know if you guys are using regular or super?  Cause right now I'm using super and just to fill up 3/4 of the tank. I spend an average of $70 every 9 days or less depending where I drive.

But who cares. I love it and not worried at all. That's the reason why I brought the Little baby.

It's not a good idea to use higher (or lower) octane than what is recommended for your engine.  The AV engines are setup for Regular gas.  Using a higher octane gas is not only wasteful, but not as good for the engine.

airwolf & friends

Don't know how your AV is set up but when I ran the lower and mid octane on my truck. Performance really sucks. I could tell right of the bat that the truck was running a bit slugish.

Yes the manual says to run regular and that good stuff. But when you notice things that the truck in not doing well. Then some things not adding up.

When I do run a higher octane, Hell the truck runs really great. I even asked on of my machanic friends and he told me also to run a higher octain gas vs. lower octain.  Try it and see if you do notice some differnce in performance.

Just can't wait to trow in the Super Charger in my AV. :D :A:

my wife and started looking at the Av in January 2003.  Every local dealer steered me away from the 2500.  In January of 2004 we settled on a Z71 WBH Dark Green Metalic.  Every time my wife saw a cladded SOM  she would get this empty hearbroken look.

Avalanche Fox found us the SOM Z71  down in S. California and behold, the birth of Interplanet Janet.
A week before we picked it up, I ordered the 2500 that I wanted to test drive nearly two years earlier.  I never got to test drive a 2500.  I just knew that it was what I wanted.  No regrets
We were getting 14.7 MPG avg. on the WBH.  I'm getting 12 with the 2500.  For $2k more on the sticker.........
The smoother ride, the color and the fact that it's hers are the only things that keeps Janet in her SOM and not trying to take the big boy all the time.

I also traded in a F350 4x4 crew cab w/7.3. I actually think the AV has more torque! :1:

I did the same thing and feel the same way about the torque. The ride is not quite as stable as the dually when towing my 22ft boat, but maybe the spacers will remedy that. I've had them for about a month but have yet to install them. I got them from perfomance wheel for $216 shipped.

Had to enter my 2 cents...(and more)
Have a 02 2500.  Live in the Northeast and make my living on the road.  Change the oil every two to three weeks (burns 1qt per 1000 miles) and fill up three or four times a week. ($70 to $75 each) MPG? Who knows, who cares! It's just fun getting where I'm going.

BTW
Try this, drive your 2500 around town for five or so minutes.  At a stop sign put your foot on the break and lightly pump the ecellerator four times.  Then take off with some gas.  I've been told by the dealer that it goes into performance mode. I guess you can say that.  Be carefull though, it's real easy to bring the rear end right around.
Another trick, as you are going down hill lightly tap the break 4 or 5 times and see what happens.  Computers!

I'm glad to say I'm a lucky member of "the club".  It used to be I felt a "connection" to all Av owners, but they've become so common that it's almost just another car.  The 2500 is a different story - not to many around.

Bought an 03 in December of 02 without a test drive.  Dealers around here HATE it when you want a 3/4 ton - none have one, most haven't heard of one, and they really want to sell you what's on the lot......  A quote from my dealer "you can tow anything you like with the 1500".  Yeah, right.

Anyhow, it pulls great - my horse trailer is 6500 lbs empty.....

At 24,000 miles, I get 13-14 mpg on the highway if I stay under 70 mph, it goes to 11-12 at 75.  This thing is like pushing a billboard down the road.

By the way, gas mileage is around 10 pulling my stock trailer @ 65.  I haven't checked yet on the horse trailer - it's taller & wider so I'm sure the mileage will be less.

Bottom line:  I LOVE IT.

Okay, so I'm not the only one out there with a 2500.

This is my first post, so deal with it.  I have  2004 AV 2500 - 2 Wheel Drive!  That's the rarest of the rare.  I bought it when I lived in LA and only found 2 of them!  The guy with the leather one didn't want to deal so I bought the cloth one.

Sorry, I didn't read all the posts, so I don't know if you got your original answer, but when I was looking at the AV, I found some numbers somewhere (don't remember if they were official or not).  80% of the AVs are the 1500 (and it's variants) and 80% are 4x4.  So that means that only about 4% were the 2500 2wd.

And yes, my gas tank takes a while to fill up also.  For a while, I was driving over 150 miles per day with this - filling up every 3 days at $75.

Regarding towing - yea, it's a b.a.  I was towing a 8000lb Travel Trailer, up the pass from California to Oregon, and was pulling away from the other cars and my wife (driving the 1500 Suburban - not towing).  I love seeing a little Civic trying to get on the freeway in front of me and being able to pull right up on them.  Gas mileage when towing 8000 lbs was getting down to about 7.5 mpg, but I found that if I drafted behind a semi, I could get back up to almost 10mpg.

Question: Anyone else have problems with the stock tires not holding in the rain?  I finally just switched them out, but I was sliding all over (front and back) even though the tread was good.

Chris - 2004 Av 2500 2WD, Metallic Charcoal

Yes, now I wished I had went for the 4x.  I used to live in LA and moved to Oregon, where I could use it now.  When I bought the AV, there were only 2 2wd out there and only 2 more 4wd.  One of the 4wd was a stripped model, and the other the dealer had done every mod possible I think - wanted over $44k for it.  Mind you, this was in ALL of LA.  And since I didn't figure I needed the 4wd in LA, I didn't want to spend almost $14 more.  If I had only known that I'd tell LA to K.M.A. . . .

Well I am one  too. I Looooooooove my 2002 AV 2500, love the way it Accelerates at passing speeds and takes the big hills without even downshifting most of the time. I will have to live with the poor fuel economy and just smile while driving........I drove a 1500 AV when my truck was in the shop last week, it sucked, no offence, but the torque wasn't there, even the steering felt different...... Just missed my 2500. I haul a heavy, all steel, snowmobile trailer with 2 sleds on there, like it was nuthing...... My old silverado would struggly on the hills towing it. I even like the front bumper cover much better then on the 1500's also. Anyhow here are before and DURING pics (for you Yakmar) More pics later today, it's finally sunny after 2 weeks, im gonna wash the beast and take some more pics on newer additions.

I wish i was an Av driver. I drive a 04 gmc short box reg cab 2 wheel drive, 5300 and the locking 3.73:1  ;D  For fathers day i suprised my dad with an 05 White 2500 LT.  WOW is all i can say ;D

The 2500 LT was hard to find. In vegas they usually have lots of everything.  I was amazed to find no Fully loaded ones.  The one i  got has dvd and navigation.  Dark gray leather with 2 power buckets, but no sunroof or side air bags.

I guess when the new 900  gets here i will order one for myself. The sticker was 47 somthing after dealer tint And Desert Protection Package !  :D:   49 somthing.  :9:

I paid  37,000 out the door . And my pops almost had a stroke when he saw his new truck   ;D :B:

Dano, congrats on your (uh, your dad's)  ;D new ride!

I had my heart set on a white 2500 identical to mine but it sold a day before I decided to take the plunge.  There were NO other similarly equipped Av's in the south central region.  I checked all over the country and found some out west that were optioned well but I didn't have a buyer for my Ram in time.  I am happy with my decision though!

Yeah, I think you should treat yourself to one as well!   :B:

Traded in our 1500 on a 2500 just a couple weeks ago. Loved our 1500 but definate difference! Night and day. Will miss the gas mileage but we tow a 31' trailer with it, the 5.3 needed tow/haul on to exceed 40mph, the 8.1 doesn't even know it's back there w/o tow/haul on! Didn't expect such a huge difference towing a 6000 pound trailer but WOW.

Never had a brand new vehicle before. My 05DBM 2500 was sitting at a dealer not too far away, and after seeing it on the internet it started calling me in my sleep. It was ours within three (3) days. I know that it sounds crazy, but I still go out driving my S.L.U.T., just to drive my S.L.U.T.. Among other things , I love the feel, the smell, the way it drives, the sound and of coarse the power! The price of gas is outrageous, My gas milage is ... well... I guess I would have to say Poor. BUT! I'm as HAPPY as a pig in %$*t. I would skip meals to drive my AV.  Thanks for having a place where I got a chance to babble about 2500.  Bob.  :A: :B:

Welcome aboard Herbold!  You picked a winner!  Avalanches are all cool, but there is something about the 2500s that really attracted me.  Mainly it was the big lump of 496 cubic inches under the hood!   Of course, you must post some pics of your new ride when you can.  And buy some ambers (orange bulbs to replace the clear Daytime Running Lights) so other CAFCNA members can easily spot you on the road.  There are different kinds of 'ambers'.  I picked the darkest orange ones I could find.  GE3457 are a nice color I think.  Most large auto parts stores and even WalMart has them.  Here is a good topic to read about installing them. It's really easy but be careful not to squeeze too hard on the bulb like I did and cut yourself!  Use gloves if a bulb is giving you trouble and won't come out or go into the socket easy.

So far with about 9,000 miles on my Av, no problems whatsoever.  Getting 12-13 MPG average, 14 on the highway.  Uses about 1/2 quart of oil between changes, and no 'piston slap' noises.  Either I have a good one or the 8.1 problems are blown out of proportion.

Luvin' every mile of it!   Tons of torque and a great lookin' ride.

I call her my 'heavy Chevy'.   :B:

Well i wasn't going to comment but  here it goes....lol  I have the first Avalanche2500 from my dealer in 2002 and it sat on the lot for so long cause of the gas prices here in connecticut so needless to say the owner of teh dealership had been driving it  so it accumulated about 8000 miles on it before i bought it. I have driven both the 1500 and the 2500 .  I personally like the stoutness of the 2500 and the power is unmatched. I don't consider myself any better than a  person that has a 1500 series there all the same shape and can have the same attitude on the road. I have heard one to many times at the pumps.......hey what has that got in it and i say a 8.1   then they say wow.....then they ask what is that in cubic inches i say 496 there like    :o  better you than me pal...lol

I just picked mine up the other day and truth be told, I had NOOOooOOOooOOOooo idea what I was getting into. Needless to say, I can't be happier! I got mine used it's a 2004 Black/gray 2500 4X4 loaded w/ everything including 6" lift and 35's.  :4: :4: :4: :4: :4: :4: :4: :4: :4: :4:

I do have some questions however....

1. What is with the oil burning issue? I will check it as often as I fill up.... Is there a fix for it?   ???

2. What does LOF stand for?

3. I only average 9.5 MPG. Is that due to the 6" lift and the tires? Any other lifted 2500 AV's out there to compare to?

4. I have read that the 2500 will smoke many cars/trucks off the line but mine is Torquey as HELL, does thta indicate that I have the 4.10 gears in it? How can I find out?

5. Does anyone have any experience with MPG improvements from adding an intake/exhaust?

That's all for now, I'll lurk some more ;)

BTW, Love my AV, Love this site and Thanks in Advance!!!

1. Nope, just watch it.  Since I change my oil every 4000 miles, it's not been a problem.

2. Line of Fire.  An extra set of lights, 60", that work off the tail lights.  You can find them here or on ebay.  I love it.

3. I'm not lifted but get about 10-12 around town and 14 highway on 265's.

4. Actually, the 2500/8.1 has about the same "off the line" performance as the 5.7.  Torgue is part of the package.  Even with 3.73 gears I can still smoke the tires on dry ground without any additional engine/exhaust mods.  Other people have better performance mods and can give you better ideas.

5. Again, ask other people but I haven't heard of too much.

Keep lurking dude, good luck.

Welcome to the club

1. I have to add about every 3000 to 4000 miles also
Have you notice how loud the engine is at cold startup
2.  The line of fire are great looking

3.  You have 8.1 liters of motor you may want to accept that mileage. engines this big should be rated as gallons per hour

4. I don't think gearing is going to help unless you are towing. My problem is the drive by wire kills the engine at the worst times.

5. Same answer is no. 3

But really my 2500 is best the purchase I have made and I have had at least 30 cars in my life time

Desert Dude- Welcome

# 3 MPG - your lift and 35" tires really hurt MPG. I get 11.5 around town.

# 5 -Exhaust- It may help a little but the s#@t eating grin you will get from a deep rumble is even better. I went with a Flowmaster Big Block # 70- dual in- dual out and it has a deep tone and not obnoxious.

Cary NC?  Kamikaze, you're in my home stopmin' grounds!  I'm a Cary Sr. High 1984 Grad (showing my age here, LOL).  I'll be back in the area around the end of July and again hopefully for a couple weeks with my 2500 Av in late Sept early October visiting friends and relatives.

So long as gas isn't $4/ gallon by then, at least.   I'll be driving 1,100 miles (maybe 2,500 total) round trip from Texas and I've yet to do that in the Av at 12 MPG.  Typically I did it in my Cummins diesel Dodge Ram that would get 20 MPG, and last time I drove to NC and back diesel was still in the $1.50 range.

Maybe I'll see you on the roads in Cary soon.

Welcome aboard new owners!

I knew what I was getting into when I bought my 2500 Av regarding gas mileage.  But I didn't know gas prices would shoot up so high not long after I bought mine!   Yet I still drive it whenever I get a chance.
Love everything about it, and so far planning on the first long road trip next week, a two day drive from Montgomery (North of Houston) TX to Raleigh North Carolina.  Hopefully it will net 14 MPG average on the
highway.  We'll see.

I just got my 2003 Avalanche 2500 a month ago, and im hungry for more.  I was sadly dissapointed when i measured out and found that my dads stock Silverado 1500 has 2 more inches of clearance in the front end than my 3/4 ton does, so im getting a 6" Superlift and a nice set of 35's.  And if i feel that the lift and tires somehow takes away from the 496ci, i might just go for the Whipple too.  who said 850 ft lbs doesnt need to be hitting the streets?

I am also sad to see the poor selection of exhaust systems for the 2500.  i will not settle for anything other than a dual catback, out opposite sides of the rear end.  everyone has let me down so far, i might just be welding up my own.

I would like to hear if anyone has what im looking into, any warnings or conciderations, or even sucess stories would be appriciated.

Hi all, I'm a proud owner of a 496 motor but in a Yukon XL not an av (sorry this is the only forum I found for discussions on modding the big block and I learned so much, thanks guys!)

Currently I've done the little beginner mods: intake, HP tune and dumped the cats (which is illegal BTW in the US but I'm in Saudi  :P) and I gotta say I was surprised with the difference after the tune! I smoked many SUVs and cars I never thought I could like an 05 durango hemi and a supercharged range rover sport. I'm not done yet waiting for the $$$ flow for a supercharger and some headers.

Be glad you weren't at one of the pumps with a dollar limit.  When it was hitting the $3.40s, I would have to max out the pump limit - twice.  I think my record was $104.  Course that was because I went 4 days between fillups instead of 3.

I have a 2003 2500 avalanche.   Love the truck and love the power.   You guys think you pay alot in gas.   Try living in northern Canada.   I spend at least 100 dollars every time at the pump.   But who cares you can always get more gas,  you won't always be able to get a 496 stock.   One other note,  try keeping the tank full because my fuel pump cost me 900 bucks and I put it in myself.

Don't go any larger than a 2.5 inch exhaust. I went with 3 inch dual all the way back with magnaflows exiting on either side and I power. Ripped it out within 2 months and went with the Magnaflow cat back system single exhaust. Got the power back (Didn't sound as nice though) and am much better off. Other than that have fun.

Autozone doesn't even have a free how to guide for us. I will say I have had 27 vehicles and never had any for more than 2 years until the Avalanche. 496 cu ROCKS!!!

I can't even find a dual exhaust for it.

I have an 03 2500 2wd. Exhaust was one of the first mods I did. It was a little tricky to find somewhere to do it correctly. I had to get all the piping custom bent and welded. The guy said it was a real pain because there isn't a lot of space around the spare tire. I ended up with 2.25 inch piping. It is a true dual cat-back setup with flowmaster 40 series. I highly reccommend it. There is nothing better then leaving a parking garage and all you can hear is car alarms going off. Gotta love the 496.

All I know is that for '04 when I ordered my 2500 there were no "Z" options - only for the 1500's w/5.3 V8. To my knowledge all 2500's through their phase out in '05 were std with the BigBlock and with added suspension that precluded the Z's. Could have changed from Z66's to Z85's?

Z66 and Z71 apply to 1500 only...
Z85 applied to 2500 only...
...if you drop your glove box door...and look on the back side...I bet you will see the Z85 code on your RPO list

I'm in!  Just bought by first AV, 2002 Indigo Blue 2500.

Searched and searched through the listings for a while to find it, too.  Not easy!  There had to be 40-50 listings for 1500s for each 2500 I saw.

I finally saw the one I bought and the dealer didn't know what he had -- it said 5.3L in the listing!  However I noticed "Avalanche 2500" cladding in one of the photos and swooped in.  Went to take a look, opened the hood and sure enough, it was hung!  Opened the glove box and saw the Z85 and G80 and I was a happy camper!  Even got a good deal on the thing!

Welcome Javvy:  :welcome:

You have a rare beast that can tow 12,000 lbs legally without having to deal with diesel fuel. A Hypertech III programmer will give you a little more power on the topend (above 4000 rpm) and about 0.5 mpg. The only downside to the 2500 is 11-12 mpg in the city and 14 highwy on a good day.

Just bought an 05 2500 from the original owner with 29,000 miles.  It has OnStar, Bose. 3:73's, G80, and towing package.  The truck is Sport Red with Dark gray cladding.  I have all the paperwork from new.  It came with the MagnaFlow 2 into 2, and a K&N intake.  I just added the Predator U7193 and it really performs great.  Truck is from Northern California so it is in fantastic shape.  Never even had a brake controller.  I'm going to use it to tow a 9,000 lbs travel trailer.  I usually put on about 1500-2000 mile a year.

I haven't seen another 2500 in the 2+ years I  have owned one.
When I was searching for one to buy, I only found 3 listed in all of AZ for sale over about a 2 week period, one of which I bought. I have talked to a few car folks that were surprised to know about a 2500 Avalanche but most are more surprised to hear of an 8.1 Liter engine.
Chevy branded the 2500s very modestly, without looking for it embossed on the cladding most would never know. Still thinking about getting some Z85 or Vortec8100 stickers....

Just about a month ago I traded my 1500 for a 2500. So I guess that makes me a member. Glad to be one!

The main reason for getting the 2500 was the towing ability. The 1500 did fine on the flatlands but any kind of hills and it struggled to pull my 27' Wolf Pack toy hauler. I just got back from a weekend trip from Dover, DE to Bowling Green, KY and the 2500 handled it without any issues. This weekend I'm making the run down US13 to Virginia Beach via the Bay Bridge Tunnel.

I didn't know it was that small a production run. That makes these almost a modern collectible. BTW I got the 8.1 and was very pleased with how it handled the hills on I-68.

So far it's done everything I've asked it to do. The only thing that has cropped up has been an unsettling chattering coming from somewhere underneath when the road gets a little rough. One of the really nice aspects of this Avey is not having to stop and let the engine cool down whenever I have to tax it a little. My 2500 had enough power with the trailer attached (about 8000lbs in present configuration) to not only maintain speed on long upgrades but accellerate when necessary. Also had no problems on downgrades either. So far I've been very impressed with the tow ability.

Yeah, I always get "That got the 5.3 or (with more enthusiasm) the six-oh?"  When I reply - "Big Block 8.1" it's always met with  :o , especially when they try to work that out to cubic inches.

Is it the Steering column mid link? These are a common problem on all GMT 800 trucks. If not the 2500 has rear leafs and these are noisier than the coil/;link the 1500's have. BTW air bags on the 2500 make a hellofa diffenrece on how these tow- SMOOTH.

Initially I thought it was the leaf springs but the sound seems forward of them. I just haven't isolated it. I never thought about it being the steering column mid-link and it could be that as sometimes the chatter sounds like its coming from a more forward position. Certainly gives me something to check into. One of the reasons I initially thought it might be the rear leafs is that it the noise is not as prevalent when I'm towing the toy hauler. Nothing like a little mystery, eh? Thanks for your reply.

You won't believe what I found was causing the chatter. The right side running board was missing a securing clip underneath. I replaced it with one I had in the garage that came off the fairing of an old Yamaha Venture and it fitted in place just fine. Now, no noise.

2004 AV K2500 4x4 8.1 (496ci)  Used and abused off road primarily.  6" BDS lift, 37" MTR's w/ Kevlar, Rough Country Tie Rod Sleeves, Cognito Pitman & Idler arm support brackets, Factory G80 rear locker, Volant CAI Powercore, Hypertech Hyperpac (selling for Nelson tune), Gibson exhaust, Lucas Oil in diffs, Mobil 1 syn in engine.  I have also cut out the crappy rear shock mounts and installed ballistic fabrications tabs that are level with the bottom of the 14bolt rear w/ skid plate and raised the top mounts to not lose any articulation.

Hey guys! First post. I just picked up a nice 2004 Avalanche 2500, black, leather, VERY nice! While at the dealer, I met the service mangler. As he shook my hand he said " That thing is a monster!, We don't see these beasts in here very often!"... and the swollen chest syndrome had begun!!!
I moved out of a Bimmer X5 (nice ride) to the 2500 to enable me to tow an 11,000lb Baja. So far, I've ordered rear spacers, Firestone air bags, a Reese Titan class V, and some RR for the cladding (although it looks great now). I'm talking with a local 4-wheel shop about adding 4.10's, and while there, I started slobbering over wheels and tires, etc.. I have no plans to lift as of now, but I'll be fighting that urge as I really would like to put a little more rubber in the wheel wells. The factory wheels don't look bad, but 16x6? Paleeze! Anyway, I'm lovin this Bad-Boy and I look forward to getting great tips from you guys in the future. Right now we've got a bunch of snow down and it's snowing like crazy... If you have a lifted 2500, join the Lifted 2500 nation, man.  I got one post haha.  My mods: 4" suspension lift, Bilstein 5100's all around, 17x9 KMC XD Diesel's, 315/70/17 BF Goodrich All Terrain KO's.  Systemwise the Bose was good enough sound, but I love a lot of bass, so I added the Alpine double din, Alpine 650 amp, 2 10" Alpine Type R's and slot ported box that replaced the midgate.  I'm a college student at UNCG, and I have the biggest truck, height and drive train haha. I ended up selling my first car, '69 Camaro, because I couldn't afford to keep it running working a part-time job and in high-school, so I sold it and bought my Avalanche.  I couldn't have picked a better truck and couldn't be happier.

the frame under the SOM is bent. No good as I want a good truck when done.

this frame is strait, got this wreck for parts to build moma's AV. Once I pull the body/bed off the silverado I'll see wether I build out the new frame with the Dmax parts or section the rear of it to the Dmax frame. Then the body of the SOM will go on. Probably with a body lift, and then all the 05 elec will go in. and then the best of the 3 interiors

Tired allready.  When the site gets back to speed I'll start a build thread here.

Thanks Avalon! You were one of THE deciding factors in my purchasing this truck! When I saw what you are towing (nice boat BTW), I knew I would be OK. My Boss 302 Baja is a hog, but pulls pretty well with enough power. I'll be adding electric/hydraulic brakes to the trailer and nix the "surge" system. Installed the Firestone air bags- nice! I have one question-will take it to a Firestone thread so as not to get off-topic. Thanks for the welcome!!!

On the factory rims? They are 6.5 inch wide and when I talked to my tire shop (know their sh#t) they looked cross-eyed at me especially since they saw the boat and trailer(replaced the recalled Chinese tires that were on it). Said 6.5 is too narrow for 285's. Just lettin you know.

Person here at work has 285's on theirs as well, I didn't see any contact in the fenderwell, but didn't look THAT close either.

x2, the stock rim is too narrow for 285's, 8 in.width  is proper fit

Ron: Not saying they won't fit. It's just that with the kind of load I put on my rear wheels the tires coiuld dismount in a catastrophic way (when going around a cureve, etc). You need a minimum rim width (70%) for a certain section width of tire and 285's need wider than 6.5 inch rims. Be safe.

agreed, it's not the right width for our wheels, and you will lose side-to-side stability at a minimum.  They will mount up and there are thousands of people using them across the various chevy trucks...  but.  Do you want to be that one guy?

I made the switch !!!

After owning our 2004,1500, Z71 for 4 years I finally had to switch. The wife and bought a 26" Wellcraft aftcabin boat (6000 dry GVW) and I was not going to haul it with the 1500. After 4 weeks of surfing the web talking to dealers/private sellers I finally found a low milage 2003,2500 with 4:10 gear and heavy duty suspension package. Had to take a 14 hour round trip road trip to take dilivery but it was worth it. What a beast !!! The wife and I love it !!!  :A: I want to thank all those AV 2500 owners that commented on this thread. I read alot here before making the switch. Everything you guys said was so true about this model. It is awesome. I cannot wait to put it to use next summer towing the boat to our favorite lakes. Thanks guys for the input !!!

On a side note I've been thinking of doing a Gibson sideswept catback on the avalanche anyone have one of these systems? I had one on my silverado and liked it very much...

I just found this thread !!! I have a 2002 that I ordered while stationed overseas. Took delivery of it 01 March 2002 and immediately drove it from Oregon to Virginia (new duty station) with the wife and two kids. Put a Volant CAI, Gibson cat back and Fabtech 6" lift kit on in 2004 (tax free war zone funds) along with Mickey Thompson Classic Lok IIs with then Pro Comp Xtremes, 35". Still have it and am now over 153K miles. Put on the Cognito zero ohm spark plug wires with E3 spark plugs about 2 years ago. Looks like I am going to change out to the AC Delco's soonest. I  love the torque, horsepower and just plain ole grunt of this engine !!!! This truck has gone from Oregon to Virginia, Virginia to Florida (after the mods in 2004), then towed a Jeep TJ to Colorado from Virginia, up Pikes Peak, and then in 2011 I hauled a small Uhaul trailer moving back to Virginia from Colorado. Couldn't ever tell you were towing anything out back. Summer in Kansas, not too awesome. God Bless all of you Kansas folks.

I’m in… we go pick up our new to us Avy this Saturday! :woohoo:
My brother has a Victory Red `02 1500 Avy and I have always liked it.
I didn’t really have the 1500/2500 choice, I tow a 7,500lb boat/trailer combo so it had to be a 2500.
We are very excited about this truck… I think its going to be awesome! :D

Welcome, the 2500 is a real tow beast. I tow a 31' Chris Craft - Cat on a steel trailer. Boat and trailer tip scales at 10890 lbs. The truck weighs 7000 lbs. Having the 4.10 makes all the difference.

Yes, maybe... if its a quite one...  :D

One of the many things I LOVE about this truck is the Locking diff...  :A:
My boat and trailer weigh 8,000 pounds, so last weekend we’re leaving the lake and just as I’m starting to pull out of the water the guy on the ramp next to me starts to pull out, he gets about half way up and starts completely smoking his rt.rear tire trying to pull out a boat/trailer that may have weighed 4,000 pounds. :o
So, I start my run up the ramp… she slips a few times but the locker kicks in and we motor up no problems… :A: :B: Then I look back and the other guy is still smoking his rt.rear tire on the ramp, except now his buddy is bouncing on the rear bumper trying to get more traction…

Got my repaint and rust repair completed a few months ago. Two front fenders, two rocker panels, patch rear quarters.  Fitted a bumper replacement off of a Silverado HD and it turned out nice.  Also painted all of the cladding satin black along with the front bumper.  Now I just need to install the 4" lift kit I have on the shelf in the garage.  I also installed a set of Edelbrock headers/down tubes while it was easy access.  Made the 4" flowmaster sound even better.  I also have the marine HO cam/injectors/LS2 throttle body waiting to go on.

None of that is installed yet.  Still sitting on the shelf.  Will also be converting to roller rockers at that time.  Fuel pump will more than likely need upgrade also im sure.  Im waiting until I finish the BBC I am assembling right now until I tear the truck apart too far.  Building a N/A 540 EFI ~770 HP for my boat right now.  I'm a powerboat guy so the 496/8100's are familiar subjects....haha.

2003 Avy 2500 owner here! Have owned it for almost 2 years. 130K-ish miles. So what are the best performance enhancements I should do. Thinking headers and dual exhaust, while "cool", is it really worth it? Gonna do a tune up and trans flush this Spring. I use it mostly to haul my 33' TT.

Welcome to the club and group     cntry_boy77, the best bang for the buck is a tune.

Try towing the trailer first before you try enhancement not much is needed.

Been there tried that! This will be my 3rd Summer towing with it. While it surely does pull better then my Sierra 1500 did, it still seems to struggle on the freeway and decent hills. Just seems like it needs a bit of something to help in those areas. Like I said, I'll give it a tune up and trans flush this Spring and see how she does. Maybe a tune will be in order. Oh, and does anyone else notice how it seems to do worse when you use the tow/haul function? My Sierra was the same way. Seems it actually looses power or something.

Some members have changed the Gear ratio from 4.10 to 4.56 for extra get up and go, but that is pricey.

Do you have 4.10 or 3.73

cntry_boy77 like MS03 2500 asked what gear ratio do you have?  I have the 4.10's in mine and it has no trouble with our travel trailer, it is a 25' that weighs in between 5000 and 6000 lbs plus the truck is usually loaded with firewood, bikes and the canoe.  I have no problem maintaining highway speed (65-70mph) while towing in the mountains of PA, MD and VA.  I usually don't use the tow/haul mode since I'm usually only at 60%-70% of the GCVW and the manual says tow/haul most effective at 75% or more, the few times I have used it I have noticed the shifts are a little more abrupt and at higher rpms so my gas mileage was a little worse than without the tow/haul but I didn't notice a lack of power.

3.73 gears. I also haul full bed of firewood, TT loaded for a family of 5, bikes, etc. I'd say fully loaded the TT is somewhere between 7500-8,000#.

I had a Hypertech unit to tune mine and it hleped. The factory tune dies at about 4000 rpm and it had another 600 rpm of power with it. The factory muffler is very restrictive. I went with a Flowmaster 2 in 2 out nice deep rumble. Headers are not recommended- very few out there.

Make sure you have AC Delco plugs- stay away from Bosch and E3 !!!!! Others here will chime in and support this statement....

The 8.1 is a great engine- I would still have mine but Michigan road salt took my baby.....

The 4.10's help too. I used to tow 11,000 - now have a 2015 Duramax

03 AV 2500 4x4 base (which means fully loaded) rocking that metallic forest green paint. The beast pulls! I'm about to find out what gas bills I have in stored on my 1800 miles/month job trips in the states. But who buys this amazing machine for mpg. It's off grid and the biggest V8 I'll own outside a diesel truck.

Someone point me in the right direction here. I need help. 175k miles, and I'm starting to see problems with things outside the mechanics of this truck. Power lag (loses power under load or at 2500 rmp)= ignition sensor or another sensor, a whining sound from accelerating like a jet engine gaining speed (transmission maintenance?), my av door mode actuator makes annoying sound when air to head selection in dual climate control is on, clicking rapid (maybe from something under hood towards center to passenger side) when accelerating, preferred AV 2500 owner advice on new bump stops on all 4, and what else do I need to consider replacing as you guys drive these AV 2500 too?

I know I'll replace ac actuator, also my rear driver side window motor. But some things tie into other things like ignition switch. You have to look at big picture and break them down into steps. Which is why I ask you guys, cuz one step can fix most of it. And I am highly considering getting a preventive maintenance service job done at GM for $900 before I hit the road.

Your thoughts?

Count me in! A 2004 came home a couple weeks ago.
So, after upsizing the trailer last summer, the good ol' '99 Sierra 1500 (5.3) was struggling on the hills fully loaded. Prowling the web / forums / local dealers / CL etc. I decided there was a 2500 Avy gonna be callin my name somewhere. Really wasn't planning on the upgrade (understatement) for another year or so, but, while the '99 was still saleable, and with good 2K5's getting scarcer, I figured waiting was not helping the issue. The search began in early November.
After test-driving a 2002 in NH that had some minor issues, I rather lucked out finding a squeaky clean '04 next town over. 98K mi, new tires in 2013, spent half of the last 6 years in FL (towing boat to and fro) so New England winters were missed for about half her life. The PO must be a lost long cousin or something, a some of what he did is stuff I would have been doing anyway (go figure) MagnaFlow duals, Bilstein shocks etc. Throw in the heated leather, 6-cd changer, Bose speakers, 9K GVW brakes, electric extending trailer mirrors, 3.73 posi, blah blah... a winner hands down!  the only thing I didn't get was the sunroof and icemaker...
I just need to rewire the brake controller from the Sierra, and re-bush the drivers door hinge, and changeover / add a few LED's and I'm done!
Thanks for this forum, as you guys were a big part of my decision making.
-mike

I picked up an '02 2500 Avalanche last Oct. I got it for a steal. It's completely mechanically sound. It just needs some cosmetic work done which I'm working on. It has 182K on it, but no leaks or any regular issues. I bought it as an offroad toy. So far I've done a 3" suspension lift, 17" wheels, 33" tires, new tonneau covers, complete stereo system with unique sub solution, and currently working on the front end. Just thought I'd sound off as an owner.

you guys with the 2500's, would you still buy one if you had no or very low likelihood of ever towing? Like would you buy one to drive to/from work every day 50 miles per day?

Drive mine every day 52 mile round trip, 243,000 plus miles, besides mods/upgrades and normal maintenance items it's all original motor, trans, rear/front end and transfer case..

Only down side of the 2500 AV is the mileage, otherwise it's the best Avalanche..

You can use compnine.com.  It used to be free, but now you have to pay.  There might be another site that tells you, but I'm not aware of them.

I am an exclusive owner of a 2002 2500 4x4 black with 100K miles 502 cubic inch motor and I love it if I can find the water leak(s) I am currently experiencing. I pull a 8.5 X 20 enclosed trailer and it goes without any problem. Last time I was in Vegas Chevy was holding something big at the Cosmopolitan where we stayed. I was on the elevator when a big dog with GM Trucks stepped on the elevator. I told him I was a multiple Avalanche owner and I asked him what should I do because as they keep dying off they are harder and harder to find. I finally told him "Hey why don't you bring them back in 2020 and come out with a limited number of the 2500's but have an option for a Duramax with the Allison Tranny". I looked at his face and I know for a fact he heard exactly what I said and he was processing it for sure. They would cost us 60,000 but we would have our trucks for twenty years.
