"ding" Sound Coming From Muffler?

P

I have been getting a wierd sound from my muffler (I think). It sounds like someone is hitting the muffler with a hammer.

It occurs about every 7 seconds and is really noticeable when I shut the engine off. It also does it when the engine is running.

Air temperature doesn't seem to be a factor and it does it when the engine is at normal temp.

Any ideas? ???

Mine more than "dings" It's the sheilding around the catalitic (sp?) converter contracting when it cools.
I do hear when I'm driving but only when driving slow after hwy. driving. A LOT louder than I was used to....took awhile to get accustomed to it but it's normal.

I hear no dings or any shield sounds from my exhaust.

WOW ygmn........maybe I spoke too soon :-X

Is it possible I'm over my tranny clunk and now assume all the stuff I've never had before is normal on my new Chevy????

I dunno.

But mine is real quiet. Even with the radio off I can barely hear the engine idle. Maybe my hearing stinks?

I will check again in the AM.

I must have a perfect AVY as I have no problems what so ever. I have nothing to complain about. Knock on wood!

I know what you mean....every morning when I get home from work...I park the Av...and sit and listen to the weird noise the cat. converter makes cooling down...

Sounds like someone is popping corn underneath there..totally normal, those things can get very hot..especially if you wot on the highway..

Mine makes a few pings and clicks when cooling down, but nothing disturbing - similar to what I've experienced on other vehicles.

What's wierd is that it does it while its running and the engine is at normal temp. I can understand the cooling part, but not when it's running..

My 2500 gongs like a church bell when I park it......

It's the exhaust cooling I think....

The big block must have a big muffler....

It's really loud.....

I have heard the noise when I turn it off put not when it is running. Have you thought about the problem my be your gas. I have heard that some fuels may make your cat converter run at a higher temp..
My wife's Lumina makes the same noise as my AV so I'm thinking it is normal.

I took my AV in for this and other small problems. They've ordered a new muffler. Just based on my limited dealership visits, they seem to just put down the simplist solution (not repro, or replace a part) without actually looking into the problem. When the backorderd part comes in and is installed, we'll see if it fixes the noise. I'll post the results.

Anyone else have this problem, and if so, did you find a resolution or was it determined to be "normal"?

When I park my '03 1500 it does the normal cool-down "ticking" combined with loud (!) "gongs", exactly like someone whacking the muffler with a hammer. Kind of like tink-tick-tick-tink-tink-PONG!!!!-tink-tink-tink-tick-BONG!!!!-tick-tink.... . These "pongs" are loud! It "PONGS" maybe 5-10 times, then just ticks. I can also hear it while driving through residential areas sometimes. It's not a big problem but can be embarrassing in parking lots, I've had people on numerous occasions ask "What the heck is that?!?!" (referring to the noise, not the Avalanche ;) ).

I do have the same noises on my 03 but I was too busy wondering what the clunk was when taking off to worry about it. Mine does the whole exhaust noise thing while running or after shutting it, same noise no matter what - even after short trips. I checked for anything loose on the exhaust and found nothing, could be normal but who knows.

I had the same nouse. The dealer told me it was "normal", but it wasn't normal. Mine was so loud that I could hear it inside...and it also did this while I was driving.

Finally, after taking my Av in for the 4th time, a sweet young lady said she'd have it looked at. She FINALLY confirmed I had a faulty muffler, had it replaced, and I've been a "happy" Av owner ever since! ;D

Make them change the muffler, it should work....

hehe... And I thought I was just going crazy..... I have noticed the BONG noise for about 2 months now. I talked to hte loacl Dayton Dealer I use and he will look into it. My Mom, who is hard of hearing, heard it the other day and asked "What in Hell is THAT noise"... lol

Thanks all...

Hawk

My dealer has installed 2 new mufflers on mine and I still have the same problem. It is really lounder now than ever before.

Mine has the rattling noise in the muffler and the dealer confirmed last week that it was a bad baffle. New muffler on order.

I had mine replaced under warranty for this problem back in December, and the new exhaust was fine for a few weeks, but then it slowly developed the same problem. It's not as obnoxious as the first exhaust, but it seems to be getting steadily worse. I'll probably have to take it in again if it keeps it up. :cautious:

I went to the dealership for my 3000 mile service, and the manager said it is the cover for the catalytic converter. It gets hot and starts to expand and contract. It is a normal thing, but it sure is annoying... :E:

MIne does it too. I have told people that it is the off road skid shields contracting from the heat. ;D

I usually get an "Oh! Cool!" reaction from that one. I figured it was a cover making the noise, but when you say it is part of the off-road package, most people just quiet right down. I guess they don't want me driving over their tiny cars with my bug AV! >:D

It is annoying, but i barely notice it anymore.

My 2002 Z71 started making a sort of "poot" noise a few months ago. It does it after running a few minutes and then shortly after shutting off. One "poot" only, each time. Not earth-shattering, but weird. Other than my recent tire balancing/wear debacle, I've had no problems with the vehicle. Worst thing every happened (so far) was hitting one of those big brown rats ( some people call them deer) on the freeway at 75 mph two years ago. :7: $7500 damage and an airborne critter. If it hadn't been for the punctured radiator core, I could have driven it home. Didn't even stall the engine.

I know this is a very old post but my avalanche is doing the same thing. I know this to be normal with most cars or trucks when it's cooling down but mine is doing it now while parked idling, and for quite a while after I shut the truck off. I notice this because it never did it like that before like when I was parked idling or not that long after the truck was shut off. It's doing it more, for much longer while it's on and driving so that's why I'm concerned as to why now has it gotten worse? Did anyone have an idea on what this could be? I mean is something going out that I should switch out before it does major damage to my truck? Everything is normal, no over heating, weather just fine, it's been doing it 6 months now and I know every sound of my truck so it's bothering me what I should do. thanks.

have exhaust checked for loose parts - heat shields especially.

Was there not a TSB for this issue and how to repair?
