Cladding my journey

DA is dual action, orbital does the same thing, paper will spin in a circle and oblong at the same time. Sometimes called random orbit.

Here is a link for one as an example.

My painter asked me if I was going to use acrylic or urethane car paint. I just want it to match the paint that is on the truck. Which would be best to spray on the cladding?

Urethane would probably be my first choice if I did it over again.

X2 if you want to do body color.

Haven't really done any wet sanding, but I have an idea of how to do it. My question is, after wet sanding, do you rinse down the piece with water or just tack rag?

I wipe it down with the prep wash, if you don't have prep wash clean water and let dry then tack rag.
As long as your paint is smooth, no sags bus hair dust you should be able to work through to clear without wet sanding.

Alright...I sprayed on the adhesion promoter and the plastic primer on one of the saddle bag covers this evening. Not sure if I got the right plastic primer or not, it is the clear kind. Tomorrow I will wet sand and spray on the high build primer, wet sand again and it should be ready for paint.

Will try to sand down a couple more pieces this weekend. Haven't bought the paint yet. Will need to invest in a HVLP paint gun also. Any suggestions on what other supplies I'll need would be appreciated.

Paint strainers, they are cheap but useful. Respirator if your ventilation is low. Patience and lots of it.

Where did you do your painting? Was there a lot of over spray using the hvlp gun? Was planning on doing this in my garage, but don't want a big mess.

What did you do for the triangular drain/grates? Did you just sand the top and sides? I have all the other pieces ready to paint except for those, the 2 grab handles and the tailgate spoiler. I plan to paint the ready pieces this weekend. Thanks.

you can be proud of your work, is just perfect
do you have an idea of the result without sanding? i mean by that maybe produce a cool texture?

The inside of the drain covers that are textured are just glossy, I imagine if you were to paint it textured and manage to get the paint to stick well enough it would be like stock with gloss. I really like the smooth look tho, and it is different than the caddie or 2013 in that the panels are slightly different so the look is unique still.

I can answer that, no it will not stick well and will peel off in a year or so. I did not sand my drain gate and sure enough the paint did not hold.

I think the texturing is actually tempered, making the plastic really durable and that's why it doesn't want to stick. After you get the texture sanded out it acts softer when sanded.

Yeah you are right, on mine the outer sail panels are sanded smooth the inner panel are sanded but not sanded smooth. The paint is still holding after 8 years, the grates I swapped with a set from a EXT my body color. I did not want to bother to sand them, yeah I got lazy.

Ok, so with the grates, did you prep them the same way as the rest of the pieces all tho' you didn't sand the inside of them? That is, did you hit the whole piece including the insides with adhesion promoter and primer like the rest?

Not sure if you are referring to me, but yes I did but it will not hold on unless to sand the shiny stuff off.

Sorry I don't really like jumping in other folks threads

No worries on jumping in MS, this is a learning thread. I did prep everything the same, and correct on just the small inside walls of the grates were left textured the rest I sanded down. So far it looks good, but like was mentioned a year (esp in the Midwest) can change a lot of things.

OK, when the cladding was made in a mold they had to put a release agent on them so they could get it out of the mold. Nothing will stick to it, so once we sand it off then we can do the prep and paint it..

I totally forgot about the release agent, and after all my time working in a machine repairing molds you would think I would have remembered that.

Blackcomb, I hope you don't mind me posting a photo of my progress in your thread. Since I used your example and instructions, thought I'd post a pic. When it's all done, I'll post pictures in the painted cladding thread. This is today, just after spraying clear coat. Thanks.
