Have 15K on my 02 AV. I'm going to change the fuel filter, but there seems to be a great difference in price for the filters. Prices I've found range from $5.99 for a Purolater, $13 for a NAPA Gold and all the way up to $20 for the AC from my dealer. Is the Purolator just as good as the NAPA Gold or AC? Is the NAPA Gold or AC worth the extra $$? I think I would stay away from a FRAM fuel filter. I think I read somewhere that there oil filters aren't really up to par with say the AC PF-59.

Any ideas are appreciated.

IMHO, 2 things...personally, I would spend the extra $$ a get a good one, not worth the risk to save a few bucks and get a peice of crap. #2 I would think it is way to early to change the filter, unless you got some dirty fuel or something. I am planning on changing mine between 30-36,000 miles. Like I said, just my opinion (y)

As the saying goes, you get what you pay for (except at the dealer). IMO as a general rule Fram does not made good quality products, though they do the meet the basic standards that a filter is supposed to. Purolator makes a good product as does AC Delco. Napa filters are typically good filters (made by WIX if I recall correctly) but a bit overpriced. You can usually find the AC filter at some auto parts stores for way less than $20 (I think I paid $10 for my last one).

Although they have gotten alot better than they used to be, the dealers are usually priced very high for the same part that you can get elsewhere.

I aggree with OviedoAV that 15k is too early to be changing your fuel filter. Go with the Chevy recommendation of 30K unless you have been putting in cheap non name brand gas.

You may get what you pay for....and you may be paying for extra profits.............

I am not sure the differences but I bet it would be fun to have them tested huh

My dealer recommended changing at 15K. I had it done on my 01 Grand AM at that time and they said it was disgustingly dirty. So an ounce of prevention....

As to the filter, I would prefer to use the AC, but have yet to find where I can buy one other than the dealer.

As has been discussed here many many times, your dealer just wants your $$. Dealerships are notorious for recommending maintenance that is not required or needed. The engineers that wrote the maintenance recommendations that are in the Av owners manual are alot more knowledgable than your friendly service reps at your local dealership.

Did you see the filter that the dealer "said" was disgustingly dirty?

I personally don't take my vehicle to the dealer unless it is warranty related. Just my opinion.

My situation may be a little different than most. My uncle owns the dealership and everyone there knows me and who I am. I don't think they would give me a line of BS because they know I'll go up the chain of command. I have done it before......

Also, if anyone knows where I can get an AC fuel filter in the Albany, NY area please let me know......other than the dealer....and I get a price break there besides.......

Just replaced mine today with a Purolater.... right at 30,000 miles.... old one wasn't too gunked up, but I don't ususally use the off brand gas, either....

Fuel filter change at at 25-30k miles is approprite and even a little early. I usually change the air and fuel at 25k intervals on my car.

I've never done this before, how do i stop gas from leaking out while I replace this filter?

You dont. Whatever is in the filter and lines will leak out. Should'nt be too much, a few ounces at most if you are quick about it.

From what I have heard starting in 04 all fuel filters on all GM vehicles are now located inside the fuel tank. Now that kinda sucks but it keeps backyard mechanics from rounding off the nuts and replacing the lines with rubber hose. Matt

Ok haven't looked yet....where's the filter on the '02s?

Located on the frame rail under the drivers seat.

I am getting ready to replace the fuel filter, does anyone have any updated recommendations on a quality fuel filter? I only have access locally to a few types (see below). I can order other types from the internet, but would like to avoid paying $5 s/h charges to order a $15 fuel filter. I have a 2002 2500 w/ 25k miles and this will be the first change, and I plan on changing out the filter every 20k after this, so I'm interested in a balance between price and quality. Any suggestions/experiences/filters to avoid at all costs are most appreciated!

Puralator - $6 (from Pep Boys)
Fram - $12 (from Checker Auto)
Wix - $5 (local independant company)
Deutsch 8$ (from Autozone)

Personally I will never use a fram filter on anything I own!!! I do maintenance on a lot of my friends and neighbors cars and cut open the old oil filters for recycling and have on more than one occassion found the ends of the paper open no glue no metal band. I would put a motorcraft filter on my Av before a fram. I use only Napa gold filters on my Av and encourage others to as well. Napa filters are made by Wix. I am anti-fram.. Matt
