Any one having any problems with thier vehicle going into 4 LO when vehicle is started without pushing the 4LO button?

I started driving today and noticed the vehicle was sliggish and had no power, I went about 2 blocks and looked down and seen the vehicle was in 4LO. When I pushed the 2Hi button it just kept flashing, tried 4HI same thing. Tried 4 AUTO and it left 4Lo. Then back to 2 HI with no problems. When I got home I tried putting the AV in 4HI, 4Auto, & 2hi with no problems. When I tried 4Lo it just flashed for about 2 minutes and never did shift to 4Lo. I placed the Av in Neutral and tried 4 LO again it did go this time with a very loud thump, When I went back to 2Hi it thumped again, tried also from Park it would not go to 4LO.

4Lo should not have to be in a specific gear to transfer just under 10-15 mph?

This is the first problem I have had, We received our first snow here in KC a few days earlier and I used 4Auto with the 4 wheel drive engaging maybe 4-5 times.

Any Ideas, AV is going to the dealer tomm sometime.

Hey whats up, you actually HAVE to be in neutral to shift into 4lo, either at a standstill or going 2-5 mph. hope this helps.

Thanks, should I be getting a loud clunk when it goes in to 4Lo

Jetter527: Just about everything you write about, including the clunk, sounds normal to me. In both my Av, and my Blazer before it, there was a definite but gentle clunk when going in/out of 4Lo. You could feel and hear it, but it did not sound or feel very drastic.

The only thing that isn't normal is starting out in 4Lo when no button was pressed. Are you sure a button wasn't pressed accidentally? Has it happened since?

If it happens again, I would have your dealer chedk things out. Maybe you have a defective switch or 4WD controller?

JETTER527-
Roll the AV in neutral going about 1-3 miles an hour. You will hear a clunk. That is very normal. Mine does the same.

From the 2003 Online Avalanche Owners Manual:

Shifting into 4 L 0
To shift to the 4 lo position, the ignition must be in RUN
and the vehicle must be stopped or moving less than
3 mph (4.8 km/h) with the transmission in NEUTRAL (N).
The preferred method for shifting into 4LO is to have
your vehicle moving 1 to 2 mph (1.6 to 3.2 km/h). Press
and release the 4 lo switch. You must wait for the
4L0 indicator light to stop flashing and remain
illuminated before shifting your transmission in gear.
If the 4 lo switch is pressed when your vehicle is in gear
and/or moving, the 4LO indicator light will flash for
30 seconds and not complete the shift unless your
vehicle is moving less than 3 mph (4.8 km/h) and the
transmission is in NEUTRAL (N). After 30 seconds
the transfer case will return to the setting last chosen.
