Hello..
My 60k mile av has loose steering..Its not the intermediate shaft..It has stock wheels, new tires.

I know the older gm trucks were notorious for eating pitman/idler arms..

Is this still a issue? Is there anything else I should look for? How well do the a-arm bushings hold up?

Thanks!
Tim

How is it you can state it's not the ISS?

Define Sloppy?

Have front end checked out.

Mine is same as it was on day 1 (for travelingman) 75,860 miles ago.

And on Day 1 it was fine and clunk free

Loose like a long legged hooker..
She wanders a lot, constantly having to correct via steering input...like driving a old jeep or a boat
also has a "clunk" in drivers side front mostly heard on low speed turns...primarily left but has also made the noise while turning right, ex...after stopping at a stop sign then turn left..clunk is guaranteed

I would get it to the shop ASAP. It's hard to tell whats loose, let it go to long it could get expensive and dangerous it something breaks while driving.

I have seen the long Legs

Have front end chekd for worn ball joints etc

clunk is ISS...

Sorry...no the clunk is not iss...it is located at the wheel...
I am quite aware of the iss clunk as I have had it in several gm trucks over the past few years

If you think clunk is in suspension and steering components... then something is worn out.

ball joint, front hub steering box...

need to have it checked out

I would guess idler/pitman arms or a hub assembly...but no reason to guess, I would have it checked by a front end specialist before you're replacing other parts including wearing out your tires. Good luck and let us know what it turns out to be.

Well it just so happens my AVA is having the same problems with about 50K, had the oil changed 2 weeks ago and the mechanic said that is was no play in the wheels and it road tested fine for him.
At first I thought it was the roads (raggedy) in my area, but my other trucks don't do the same.  May have to take it in for a 2nd openion.

I had the same clunk sound when I first bought my 04 z66. ?At the time it had 32k miles. ?Took it back and forth to the dealer several times then, with many suggestions from the guys here, told them to check the ball joints. ?They replaced them and I haven't heard it since. ?

However the loose steering I have yet to experience. ?I have had the same ISS problems as everyone else. ?

Bigntall1,
Had the same problem repaired with about 6k on it, this problem appears to be the idler arm.  I'm not a mechanic just my .02 but I will get a 2nd openion.

My problem was the Body mounts.
Did you experience the same symptoms as stated before or was it a clunk?

Yeah when I had the clunk it ended up being a loose crossmember and a bad body mount. They might have even said something about a motor mount also but I cant remember now. The clunk came from down at your feet.

How does a body mount go bad?
bad from get go in that they are too short or too flexible..

Is this something I can check?  Or do I need to take it in to a mechanic?
