100 Watt Backup Lights. In Rear Bumper Step

G

got_change

GUEST
I had to give my av a mod for christmas! I was able to put in the billet lazar star 100 watt lights, almost flush mounted, thru the rear bumper step.

the inside back of the step is on an angle, and the lights mount from behind, with the top flush, and the bottom sticking into the step area less than 1 inch.

this was a clad cut, and the metal backup panel, behind the clad... they came out ...almost perfect, and I know my flaw, on the second light install.

when drilling, inside the bumper step, first use a small drill, for the center hole ...exactly where you want it, becaust the ..2 1/16 hole saw, will walk on you if you dont have the perfect center hole first, due to the angle in the back of the step.

I had the center marked in the clad, and cut the second hole in less than 5 minutes, with the 1/2 inch drill, and the 2 1/16 hole saw,and it was about 1/4 inch off, and it still looks ....awesome, and now when i go to reverse, ...191,000 candle power...x.2.

it light up the wall of the warehouse, across the street, and I can see really good , back there now.
I have not installed an overide switch, for...you know... the guy behind you with his brights on.

this is a tough mod, hard to cut, and line up mounts, but I found a natural place in the rear frame, for the continous duty solenoid, got the ground on left rear, from the existing ground, the power from the blue(brake controller) hot wire at the trailer plug, and used the light green, the center pin, in the trailer plug, to kick in the solenoid.

my christmas lights this year are in the avs rear bumper steps!!!!! i have a few pix if any avr wants..g-c

the lazer star is very bright, and tucks in the bumper step, without ruining the step area

Sands611, I noticed that you have the line of fire in the back, where is that plugged in and how are the backup lights wired up. Also where did you get them.

Thanks, James R.

Got Change, I think we are taking lighting to the extreme.

If you added up the total wattage of all of your lights, I think you would have the AV record. If you were to add it all up, how much would you have?

I'm up to 285" of neon in my AV so I think I hold the record on that.

David

mmdavid, volts is volts, 12 volts, divide into watts, to get amps..400, divide by12= about 30 amps , .for all my light mods.

just had to do a mod, cause it had been too long.

hey, curious mm where did you get your neons , and other , mods, power from?

This one was by the rear bumper, so I had 40 extra amps back there, and the trailer harness.(z82?) light green backup wire waiting for me.

Neon takes up almost no amps... the underbody kit is 4, each light is about .4 amps each. I think I'm under 10 amp total, coming right off the battery. If I used a brighter color my AV would probably be visable from space. :)

David

mm david you already , are floating in space..

Neon space

you oughta be careful, the radiation from all the neon might possibly alter your mind....and produce a need to be riding ... flowing with the glow

Instead of going with the flow!!!!

I've been known to take obsessive compulsive to an all new level before. :)

You should come to Tower Shops Friday and check it out!

I'd like to see you blind a few more people too. >:D

That would be a great mod when you back your boat and load it at night! Specs please, I.E. order place, cost, etc.

the small, but bright billet lights, are for harleys, sandrails, and are made by....www.weekend concepts.com...or lazer star.com.

I found them in dune buggy and hot vw magazine. a bunch of vw, and off road catalog shops sell them. they are 150.$ a pair, machined billet in 50,75,and 100 watt, spot or flood beams.
'
there is a less expensive .....model, not lazer star.
at first, I was going to flush mount in upper sail panel inside corners, and then went for bumper step area instead.

there are a lot of boat, cockpit lights, that are waterproof, and flush mount from the outside, I will say the 100 watt are probably too much for out back, and will aggrivate the wrong person, if I purposely shine back at them, and am trying to resist the urge and necessity, to have them come on at any time, not just in reverse.

for camping, or at the boat ramp, or driveway work, i will need the extra switch, and may locate it outside in the back, rather than having in truck, and using them while moving down the road

Maybe inside one of the side lock boxes? It would be easy to get to, but tamper resistant (you don't want someone turning it on when you're not there and running down your battery.)

jryther, heres a pix looking back thru the rear view mirror, way after dark.
I should have cleaned the water spots off mirror first!!!
