FINALLY got this mod done - all 4 on hi is now functional and as easy as stated in this thread.  It took me longer to turn the instructions into a PDF than it did to heat shrink wrap the diodes and install em.

One thing I did a bit different is that I color coded the diodes.  The FTDRL are done in red heat shrink up to either end of the diode.  The other mods are in white.  I also covered the diode itself with the next larger size heat shrink tubing and used clear.  This lets me see which way was the right way to install, yet kept everything visible AND protected.

I have the PDF available if anybody wants it.  Just send me a PM and I'll get it sent out.  It is too big to put on here as an attachment...
I would appreciate it if you could send me the PDF on FTDRL. akmidnightson@hotmail.com    thanks

The link to the pdf, along with the full directions, is on page 1 of this thread.

Awesome instructions!  Worked perfectly.  One question though, should my low beams be on with my DRLs during the day now?   ???

No, something is crossed.

Any guess on which one?

Double check you DRL to LOW connection.

Perfect!  I have the black line on the diode facing the wrong way.  :E:  Assumed they all faced the same way after installing the first three.

glad you got it figured out  (y)

I myself just finished up putting all 5 diodes on....I did everything step by step until remembering to put the diodes in the right direction...( i even marked the heat shrink!!!) Then after I had it done everything worked great except the drl's....Then I got to thinking that I don't remember them working before....I pulled the bulbs and sure enough they were blacker than a coalies....you know what...put in the amber 3157's and it all works like a champ!!! I also got my subs, amp and sirius all wired in through the factory h/u.....2 mods down....I dont know where to go next...I'm on a pretty tight budget at the moment so I'm working on the cheaper ones now...I've been seeing the maglite mod around here alot....I'm not sure as I would ever need it though??? Unless I'm missing something....Any mod suggestions would be great!!!!

Mods are a dime a dozen...    :welcome:

I never thought I would use the MagLite mod, but it comes in quite handy.  When you least expect it, a flashlight is a good thing!

With my stereo, the 2nd battery tray has been very useful.  Even if the 2nd batt I had laying around isn't hooked into the system yet, I can still get a boost after 7 hours of non-stop THUMP from the stereo.

The other mod that has been quite useful is the 12v cigarette adapter in the bed of the truck.  It comes in handy when using a converter or running a Kool-A-Tron in the back.  Cheap mod, but very useful.  You have the #1, #2 and #3 done on my list already... ambers, FTDRL, and stereo.

Then there's the 2nd bed light switch, the cool air intake, the dual exhaust, the Avalanche bug shield, the membership and sticker on window, etc. etc. etc.  The list grows faster than money on a money tree

Keep on modding, glad you got your diodes and ambers installed!  (y)

thisdj1, the sail panel LED lights are an inexpensive mod $20. Painting you grille bowtie to match your trucks color is also a cheapie $5.  Cargo bed light mod is only a few bucks $5.  Tailgate & rear bumper cup holder mod $10. E-Z up Tailgate mod  $20.
:0: We should start a Frugal Mods Thread  :0:

Well im thinking Im going to do the mag lite mod after thinkin about it...The painted bowtie is a nice idea as well...my buddy owns a body shop so Im going to see what route he recommends to get it done....and see if there is anything else to paint while im at it....the sail panel lights look really good...i have read about some grounding out issues with those though...Im  not sure if its a project im ready to undertake...i need to do some more reading up on it....im liking the cargo light switch idea...the cupholders are a nice addition but just not for me....I havent heard of the ez up tailgate???? I do like the frugal mod thread though!!! Not everyone has to be rich to own an Av....Heck I work 3 jobs and 70 hours a week, literally, to enjoy the experience only an Av can give!!! I've actually always been a Ford guy.... I always said the only Chevy Id ever own would be an Av...and here I am!!!!

How was the install of this...It seems fairly easy on paper but those are the ones that scare me the most!!!! I am also assuming it will work for our trucks even though it only lists the Siverado/Sierra???

finally got around yesterday to going to radio shack for the diodes...and they were OUT!  I may just order online.  Yes, I procrastinated for about a year now.  Im getting in gear now.  NExt RS is about a 40 min drive.

Thats a whole different story with me and the diodes at Radio Shack....I had  the number I needed and arrived and found the location of the diodes. Well none of the sections were labeled with the number I needed. An employee came to me and asked if I needed help and I told him what I was looking for. He then proceeded to look at the same bin, I must have resembled Ray Charles that day, and he couldnt find anything. So then he goes to his computer to search on the internet....As I aimlessly walk around the store....After 5-10 minutes he tracks me down with a 10 pack of what I needed. They are listed as 2 part numbers on the package. The number I got off this site was the "other" number. Needless to say I got my diodes. I was worried for a bit though!!!

hmmm...maybe I go back and ask them...or better yet, another shipment has come in.  I woulda friday, but all the salesmen had one on ones with customers

Picked up diodes from Radio Shack, no problem. They had lots of them, even up here in Fairbanks AK. NOTE: Make sure you get shrink tube small enough to shrink up on the wire. Clear is a good idea! If it ever stops raining here, I plan to do this soon.

I think Im going to get my mag lite mod done pretty quick...Just had a flat the other day....Luckily I had a car there with a flash light because that #$% &#!( POS spare tire won't come down.....That's for a different thread....I'd like to donkey punch the over educated retard that came up with the secondary lock idea  :beating: Ive changed plenty of tires on Chevys without it and it was pretty easy...Ive never seen a spare tire rolling down the road because it didnt have the secondary lock....What do I know though!

This is a great mod - I should have done it months ago.  Thanks for the diodes, Ed!  BTW, I finally figured out an easier way to apply the heat shrink, after struggling to get it over the diode, and then losing the black side.  Instead, cut 2 short pieces of different colors, then have them meet up in the middle over the diode.  Works just as well, is much easier to install, and you won't lose the direction.

Hey Bill,
Did you do the FTDRL and AOH?  I like the idea of the 2 diff color heat shrink.  I haven't been able to find the "clear" ones anywhere.  For the next GTG I'll have to print up the instructions just in case anyone with an 03-06 wants to do this mod.  I'll just need to pick up some heat shrink.
Cheers,
Ed

Didn't know where else to turn for this post because I couldn't post my own thread so here it goes.  I want to replace my stock 9145 fog light bulbs with the 9005 high beam bulbs but am concerned with the heat doing damage to the housing.  I guess I could go with the 9004 low beam bulbs but I am still concerned.  I have read other threads about this and other people have reported no problems.  Any input would be greatly appreciated. :help:
