Do the 2002 tailgates not lock?It seems like I've tried everything and nothing works.I haven't tried with the keyless buttons because mine are broke at this time.Any ideas?

Yes, the lock should work, but it is a manual lock.

:E:

Yeah, I know, it should work with the remote...if you have a list of mods to do, add "remote tailgate lock", and, while you are in the tailgate anyway, add 'Backup camera, bezel mount".

You'll be glad you did.

By "everything", does that include inserting the key in the lock cylinder and turning it 90 degrees? :)

Stock 2002 tailgate will only lock by inserting key into tailgate lock and turning.

there is no power lock from factory.

unless he means hes having difficulty locking it.  Mine was pretty tought to lock awhile ago.  Had to play with lock, and sometimes my tailgate would fall while IM driving.  Then I got a recall notice on my tailgate cables.  After I had those replaced, I never had a prob.  Dunno if the cables did it, or if the dealer adjusted mine, but I never had the problem since.

The cables would have no bearing on the function of the lock.  Coincidence :)

Actually,it has fallen one time when I was driving.I still can't seem to get it to lock.

If it falls when driving then the latch pins need adjustment.

If it does not lock then linkage inside tailgate could be broken.

first of all.. where's the icon for the PM???  and I am not allowed to send emails??? WTF??? ???   :E:

mine falls while driving many times over years... I had to slam the door then try to pry it open to make sure it's latched well.

then for last month, it got worse and i had to shut door twice or three times to get latched well.

now it is nolonger latch locked anymore.    can you PM me or email me and explain what I need to look for before I order new latches or something else..

my truck is, obviously by my  username...  2004  z71

Hope this helps - Adjusting Tailgate Latch

On mine the bracket on the back of the lock cylinder was bent when I got it, so it wouldn't lock. I have to remove the bezel, straighten the bracket, and thoroughly lubricate everything in there. Now it works great. You have to make sure the tailgate is completely closed too, otherwise it won't lock.

Apologies for dragging up an old thread, but I just had the issue where my tailgate wouldn’t lock (couldn’t get the key to turn the full 90 degrees), and this YouTube video really helped solve:
