2004 Avalanche - Huge Water Leak

I have a 2004 Avalache that is leaking water into the rear and front passenger side carpets as well as a small amount into the driver's rear side during all rain storms. The leak is coming from back tailgate area. I have blown all drains out with air compressor - no clogs. I have removed the rear window twice since I owned vehicle. Chevy dealership is trying to say that leak is from heavy usage and incorrect assembly when putting window/midgate bar back into place. We used owner's manual to reassemble and the parts clip into place - not much room for error. Dealership wants $900.00 to replace all the rear seals in the entire back bed area. Called Chevy and waiting for reply. To add insult to injury, the dealership states there is no guaratee with the job and if I remove back window again and install "incorrectly' they will charge another $900.00 to fix again. Also, they charged $82.00 to find the leaking problem even though I had identified it for them and left my truck with more water in it than when I drove it in. Has anyone else experienced similar trouble? Any quick fix solutions? Another friend with the same problem siliconed his back window and gate shut.? Why hasn't Chevy mandated a recall? Any help appreciated!

Take the window out and drop the midgate. Get some die electric grease or Vaseline and apply to all seals. This stopped my leaking I had in the midgate when I would have the panels off. Now I do not have any leaking at all in my Av including the bed.

What happens is that the seals get dry and they don't seal properly the Vaseline or die electric grease lubricates the seals and they work again.

Good luck

Have tailgate down when closing midgate and make sure it is shut completely as it has a double latch..

then install window which is pretty much only goes one way and cannot see how that can mess up seals...

Butttttttttttt....

have they check other places for water leaks?

How do they know for sure the water leak is the midgate area?
You can test that... drop rear seats get inside and have someone hose the back of truck...

check this sectio for info on where others had leaks

Poosilbe it could be from the wheel well also. Know this was a problem and TSB is out on it.

Also I had a pinched rubber seal (trim that is on the bottom from the mid gate) was pinching it and not letting the seal set properly on the mid gate. I reset the seal and plastic, had not had any other issues since.

Make sure the midgate is closed properly. It locks on both sides.
Don't be afraid to close it hard. I had that problem and the
guy there said to do this. GM sell a silicone grease that works
  great on all your gaskets.

I took my truck in for the airbag light coming on, they told me that my drains were clogged with wood chips and debri and something to do with airbag was getting wet and my carpets were wet underneath, they said when you run a truck that hard you have to clean out the drains, I only had wood in my truck 3 times this made me mad because I baby this truck and didnt know about cleaning the drains out, he said driver error and not covered in the warranty, they looked for the leak for 2 days and had my carpets, seats and console out, had truck a total of 4 days, I guess it is my fault for not cleaning the drains out but what an eye opener that was.

I've read about that connector corroding before  :(

NHemmingway,

don't give up on getting help...

work through some of theses ideas to make sure that you've done all you can to seal things up... and that it isn't something simple...

If you need to ... go to a different dealer for help... sometimes they're simply Buttheads and you have to try someone new with a fresh perspective
