Good Morning All,
I'm planning for a rear differential service at 7500 miles and in addition to draining and filling with synthetic fluid, I'm looking into a better rear end cover. Mag-Hytec's rear end cover.
Question is.... What differential/rear end does the 2500 have? I haven't seen it mentioned in the owners manual.

front differential [4x4] is 10 bolt 9.25"
rear differential [4x4] is 14 bolt Corporate 10.5"

These are the 2500 specs.

Gandolph,

Do you have any idea what the specs are for us little 1500's? ?Just curious :)

No, but here is how to find them [and post]

1. Get a big piece of cardboard and use it to crawl [slide] under the front differential - count the bolts and look for a label on the differential that should give you the gear diameter.

2. Use the same cardboard to slither under the rear differential and again count the bolts [important] and there whould be a label with gear diameter by the fill port. nb, mine was missing.

3. Call the dealer parts dept and give them the last 8 digits of you VIN [ on front window or front driver door ] and they should be able to tell you the diameter of the rear gear, you still have to count the bolts.

Looking forward to the results. ;D

Of course I will be glad to do it for you if you want to drop the truck off for a couple of weeks, please fill tank.

The front diff (if you have one!) is a GM (corporate) 8.25"
The rear is corporate 10 bolt, 8.625". These aren't HD items, BTW.

Thanks Steel! I don't care what gandolph says about you, you're alright! j/k ;)

You saved me some crawling under, although with a good floor jack and some stands handy, I could have made my life a bit easier :).

Yeah, I figured they wouldn't be the heavy duty ones... the price you pay for having the 1500. I'm not doing any hardcore rock crawling though (the Av is too long anyway) and I only trailer once in a great while, so they should hold up. But if I do succeed in destroying one of them it will :

a) make a great story (hopefully with pics)
and
b) be an excuse to put something better (with an Eaton locker?) back in there :)

These are the 2500 specs.

The front end isn't technically a 10 bolt.? Its an AAM 925 center section. (10 bolts were 8.5" and the more recent rearends are 8 5/8")?

The rear is also an AAM, technically not "corporate" at all.? However when it was designed GM was a major shareholder in AAM.

Check out www.highclearance.com for a heavy duty FF 14 bolt cover if you are into stout parts.
