I GOT 15000 MILES ON MY AVALANCHE AND ENGINE OIL LEVEL SLOWLY DECREASE.I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS NORMAL FOR VORTEC 5.3.WHEN I CHECKED THE AMOUNT OF DRAINED USED OIL,I'M SHORT 3/4 QUART.
OIL CHANGE EVERY 3000 MILES MOBIL 1.
NEED SOME ADVICE.

Welcome aboard fellow Av owner....I currently have a smidjen over 14,000 and can tell you I don't experience this problem...to I would say no this is not normal with the 5.3's.....refer to the above as suggested by our buddy sjprowler... :B:
 
If I understand your question... your Avalanche is using 3/4 of a quart of oil in 3000 miles, right? While some people swear that their vehicles use no oil in 4 or 5 thousand miles, most manufacturers claim that using a quart of oil in as little as 750 miles is "normal". Part of the reason for this is that we are using "lighter" oils (5W-30 rather than 10W-40) which protect the engine better and circulate more quickly. The downside is that they more easily get around valve seals and piston rings. While I would not be happy with an engine that used a quart of oil in 750 miles, I think that 3/4 quart in 3000 miles is probably excellent and certainly nothing to worry about.
 
One question I would ask is was the motor broken-in on conventional oil or synthetic ?

I always use conventional oil for the first 6 or 7 thousand miles to allow the rings to seat properly. And, I would not be surprised if someone used synthetic from day one that they would have more oil consumption than average.
 
I used conventional the first 1000 miles. I'm using about 1/2 quart per 3000 miles now. Not bad and totally acceptable. But I know what you mean I wish it was none (unnoticable). Getting the rings and every thing seated in is important and I may use conventional oil again to see if that helps. Just be careful of oil with lots of additives ie don't use!
 
02, My 99 silverado 5.3 used about 1/2 quart in 4000 miles until I hit 15000 miles and then never used any. Now my Av 5.3 uses nothing i put in 6 quarts and drain out 6 (I also cut open the filter and pour that out)that hold about 1/3 quart. good luck

Hi Pete, how long have you had the truck, or more important when as it made?
 
I have the same consumption issues with my AV. It has about 20,000 miles, burns about a quart every 3000. I run Mobil1 Synthetic 5w-30. Most people I talk to say this is normal.

Also, I don't know if it matters but I have a lead foot and drive the vehicle moderately aggresive.
 
Have been using the Mobil 1 since 3000 miles and have had no usage going with the 7500 mile oil change interval or should i say every 7-8 weeks.
This oil change was the first time i have noticed and usage and it is down about a 1/4" from the full line for the first 3600 miles on this oil change, (3 weeks). To me that is totally acceptable. Will watch it close for the next 3-4 weeks till the next oil change.
Aggressive Highway driving 95% of the time >:D

I went till about 8,000 on conventional motor oil.....then I switched to the synthetic stuff.....just like stated before I wanted to make sure everything sat like it should before I moved on to the synthetic stuff.....I'm still waiting a while longer before I drop in the slick 50.. :B:
 
I GOT NEW PCV VALVE FROM THE DEALER.GONNA INSTAL IT MONDAY SEE WHAT HAPPEN AFTER THAT. ???THE PCV VALVE GOT A PIN SIZE HOLE.TOTAL DIFFERENT THEN ORIGINAL.MY VIN NUMBER FOR THE YEAR IS 1,I THINK THE TRUCK WAS MADE IN 2001.MODEL YEAR IS 2002.I HAVE MY AV SINCE MARCH 02.THE MOTOR WAS BROKEN-IN ON CONVENTIONAL OIL.I SWITCH TO MOBIL 1 AFTER 6000 MILES. :B:
