My AC quit. No warning, just got in it and turned it on like always--and nothing. It was 106 outside at the time.

Took it to dealer this morning. My service tech whipped a new switch out of his drawer along with a wrench, and replaced the High Head Pressure Switch right there on the service island. GM Part#89040362.

Two minutes later I was gone.

He said the switch with the brown band around it is the culprit. He said they are all going bad.

Note to moderators: If this is repetitive information--feel free to delete it. I tried a search, but it takes forever to find anything.

didn't he have to replace coolant or freon or whatever they call the junk now.....I imagine the pressure switch is in the stream of coolant fluid huh??

Yeah, the same problem happened to my mom's 03 tahoe, unfortunately we were on a six-hour ride and there were 5 of us in the car. She called the dealer and the woman said that they had been having problems with the A/Cs, but I thought it was only the Tahoes. Looks like it might be the 03 trucks....

YGMN,
Nope. We got lucky this time. It's the switch on the side of the dryer thingie on the passenger side of the firewall. You simply unscrew it and it goes "Pssst" and then the little core thingie shuts off the pressure of the system. Screw the new one on and Presto !! You're done. My AC system was not opened to the outside air. I can take a picture of the switch for everybody, if you like. I think I can figure out how to attach it.

sounds like GM knew these switches would need to be replaced a bit more than normal.....as they have a shreader valve behind them.........or good engineering....take your pick

And thanks for info TROPHYMAN

I'm not sure what I'm doing. Trying to post pic of the "new" switch that a couple of guys have asked for.

Hope I helped somebody.

trophy do you have a bigger pic as this one is kinda small....

I had a problem with the AC blowing warm air which I think is in another thread. I hit the auto switch on the climate control and only got warm air no matter where I set the temp at. Drove 6 miles or so playing with it, hit the auto switch again and the AC came on and has worked since. I see a trip to the dealer in my future :6:

YGMN,
Sorry. I tried to make it bigger but it kept kicking it back saying "100KB" max.

Tell me what to do and I'll see if I can fix it for everybody. Or.......... better yet, how about if I e-mail to you direct and you post it for me?

I feel..... :2:

No I am worse at that then you....there is a thread in the feedback section about img tags they like reduce the size or something....Shapeshifter gives an example....I guess your pic is too big....so you have to shrink it or post a link to it....

The switches arent the only problem they are having with AC. My compressor on my 02 Sub welded itself together in Ocala Fl on Monday. I was lucky enough to get to the dealer before it caught fire. Unfortunately no one had a compressor, GM had them backordered and the closest one was more than 24 hrs away. I ended up having to remove the lower splash panel myself and cut the belt off of it and drive 1150 miles home with the windows down in 95 degree heat and rain.
My local dealer had a tough time finding the part also, They had to get one from Texas. Fortunately the parts manager is a guy I have known my whole life (We lived next door to each other)
Apparently they are having a lot of failures on the Nippon-Denso style compressors. They are mounted on the lower right side of the motor and they thought the increased heat in that location might be partially to blame.
Apparently all of the full size trucks use the same set up. Sooooo if yours starts to make a noise that sounds like something rubbing on the fan blade... better get it in right away !
