??? The ride is coming up on 36K miles and I'm thinking of buying an extended warranty. Any suggestions about which company to sign up with?

Holla back, y'all ;D

I never buy extended warranty on anything, IMO they are a ripoff. Auto insurance is almost as bad, I've had 2 claims for maybe $3000 total in almost 30 years. I know some disagree but I'd rather save the money and take the gamble.

On vehicles I intend to keep, I grab the GM extended. Yes, it's more $. The Warranty Gold fiasco has proven that cheap doesn't always equal good ;)

GM warranty offers a bunch of convenience, drop it at any dealer, etc. Still carries most of the same benefits of the original warranty.

If you're going to modify a bunch of stuff, it may not be the smartest choice howveer.

I am flying NAKED here....with no Extended warranty.....I have no fear....

My thought is...take the money you would use to buy extended warranty..and put it in a savings account...or CD...or something...where you can earn interest and the money grows....

If ya ever need to repair truck....remove money and pay for repair....

If ya never need repair...ya got some extra money for next vehicle down payment...or whatever....

But this is my opinion.....

these policies are $$$ and always have a deductable.....plus since you have owned truck since new...you know if it has had problems etc etc....

PS...there are some other threads in this section all sorts of various aftermarket extended warranties...

Good luck

I lean towards the "don't get one" philosophy, mostly because they don't seem to be true, bumper-to-bumper, no exclusions, no deductible ones like the factory warranty. I've also heard of struggles in getting claims paid.

I do need to see how GM intends to handle my "Service 4WD" issue should it come up after 36K miles. I really don't feel that I should have to be responible for further attempts to repair this should I have trouble again as I've had it in the shop about 5 times for this issue, starting at when the truck had only a few hundred miles on it :cautious:

GM sells their own warranty called the GMPP that is an extension of the factory warranty. It is available as a bumper to bumper, $0 deductible as well. People have been very happy with it.

I received a packet in the mail last week from GM Protection Plan. This is the second so far I have received, the website is www.gmppdirect.com , not sure if this one is worth the time and money to review. The basic plan is 36mth/54,000 miles for $820.00 with a $100 deductible.

Anyone have this plan or have it under consideration?? :)

I have the GMPP plan on my 30th T/A and would not have any other plan.

I went with the most coverage (miles, time and plan items covered, available in January 2001), with a $0.00 deductible.
I was able to pay for it over a 12 month period in an installment plan (with no interest) directly through GMPP.

We are getting close to the end of the factory warranty, via the mileage.

I have a feeling we will go with the GMPP plan on the AV as well.

I just got off the phone with a GM dealer finance mgr, and the plans are structured a little differently now, than they were in the past.

The old way - you would by a plan with an extended time and mileage, but the plan?s end mileage and date was based on the original inception date and mileage on the vehicle, when originally purchased.
i.e. if your AV is now at 2 years and 30k miles, if you wanted coverage to 5 years and 75k miles, you would have to buy a 5 year 75k plan.

The new plan structure acts more like a true extended warranty -
The plan extends the stated time and mileage from the purchase of the specific plan.
i.e. if your AV is now at 2 years and 30k miles and you wanted to get to 5 years/75k, you would purchase a 3yr/45k mile extension.

Anyone looking to go with a GMPP plane, I would suggest that you check around with various dealers, as these GMPP plans, just like vehicles, can be sold at different dealer mark-ups.

The other nice things about going with the GM version, is that GMPP will be around as long as there is GM, and according to my Pontiac service manger, they are usually the most hassle free and provide the most coverage for a GM vehicle.

I have one called Automobile Extend backed by DFS Insurance. My dealer is a small town dealer and has been using it for 25 years. They say is great, although I was pissed of when they sent this dinky-ass insurance card in the mail. I thought I was buying the GMPP. I felt mislead, so i confronted the sales person at the dealership and he said they really don't sell alot of the GMPP, but offered to change it for me. He apologized for not explaining it, but the GMPP was about $1000 more than one I bought. Although I don't not trust car dealerships, the guy did say that if I had any trouble, "you can beat me up over it," which if I may very well do if any trouble occurrs >:D.

It's a gamble, of course. If you have alot of electronics and bull$hit that is labor intensive, then the extra warranty may do you well. But I'm still wondering whether to keep mine or not. I probably will.

I bought one at 34k from a Pontiac Dealer who sold me a warranty from Universal Warranty which now I have 40k on my Av with a bad Blower control moduel and a service 4 wheel drive issue which needed to be reprogramed. Universal says it is not covered so now I am tring to get a full refund from a crappy warranty company which the Pontiac dealers says well the should cover it.

Do not Buy from Universal Warranty, they cover nothing.

I am in the same boat and have been doing so research on it....

GM is rediculous...the price is so out of wack.....

I read an article her on WD...Warranty Direct....interested i called

Man what a deal.....less than 300 a year for 5 yrs w/ 100 ded.....my truck has had its issues so a EW is a must....howerve my wifes car i have nothing, I think it depends on the veh...but definately check out WD if u decide....

PS...they will let u use your local people and evrything, this was a nice aspect...the same mechanic...local guy...can work on both my vehicles now....DOWN WITH ASHEVILLE's CHEVERLOT DEALERSHIP>.....as long as they take plastic...WD will work w/ them...

GM's GMPP is not a bumper to bumper. It covers mechanical breakdowns. It covers more than any other plan on the market. There is no plan on the market that is bumper to bumper. That's dealers trying to sell it telling you that.

As i am a finance manager at a finance dealership, i am VERY familiar w/ most of the plans out there, ESPECIALLY the GMPP.

GMPP covers EVERYTHING EXCEPT:

Maintenance services & parts
Glass
Lenses
Sealed Beams
Light Bulbs
Tires
Components not installed by the veh manufacturer
Bumpers... lol.. (thus no "bumper-to-bumper")
Sheet Metal
Body Panels and Parts
Carpet
Hinges
Trim
Upholstery
Convertible or Vinyl Tops
oldings or Bright Metal
Air & Water Leaks
Wind Noise
Odors
Weather-Strips
squeaks
Rattles
Paint
Rust
Carburetor
Contaminated Fuel System
Exhaust System
Catalytic Converter
Brake Drums/Rotors
Brake Pads/Shoes
Shock Absorbers
Batteries
Spark Plugs & Wires
Manual Clutch Disc

That's pretty comprehensive as far as I'm concerned. :D :B: :D
