Good day all, I have an '06 Z71 WBH, with 15,000 mi. From the start when shifting from park to reverse and/or drive there is a clunking from the rear. Sometimes I can feel a thump when the vehicle down shifts from third to second, or second to first during a slow deceleration. My dealer says they have checked it and found no problem, saying the noise is common on a 4WD truck, my others were 2WD, so I have no frame of reference. The dealer also claims to have checked other new '07's and found the same noise.

Any thoughts would be appreciated...

I'm getting the same thing on my 06. I thought I might just be hearing things that are normal for the AV. Glad to know that others are hearing the same thing.
OK you long time AV owner experts... chime in. Is this a problem or "normal" for the AV??? ???

I've owned 2 other trucks (a Jeep and a Dodge) and I never heard this kind of noise from the back end. I think there's something wrong. I'm going to get it to my dealer before my next long trip pulling a trailer. I don't want it crapping out during a trip. I can't believe only 2 other members here have heard this kind of noise!  :cautious:

You're not alone. When I back it out of the garage onto the street, shift... CLUNK. Go about 100 yards to stop sign. Stop. Accelerate .... CLUNK. Sounds and feels like it's coming from the rear. (Hmmmm. That sounded bad! ) Don't know if it's "normal" or not. I called the dealer to order my steering column stuff from that TSB, and it's been about a month... still not in.

CLUNK.  :beating:

I had a '90 Z71 Extended cab that I bought new and drove for 16.5 years until I got my '04 Z71 Avalanche.  It had this clunk from day 1 and until I sold it in January.  Never caused any problem, 123,000 miles.  Haven't heard it on the AV yet though.

Normal, they all have a driveline clunk from park to drive. As for the downshift clunk all 4l60e's have this noise, its torque reversal, it happens when one cluch pack is released and another is applied, that momentary reduction in torque causes a clunk when the clutches are applied, this helps prolong the life of the cluch packs and you don;t have 2 applied at the same time...I have delt with this concern at the dealer as a tech for 11 plus years, no need to worry.  There is a recal that lessens the noise on some....

It is not5 just the 4L60E.? I have owned nothing but chevrolet's my entire life.? From 1970 Chevelle's to '76 trucks GM has ALWAYS had that rear-end "clunk".? I have just come accustom to it. Just keep the u-joints greased and you will be fine.

You have described my problem exactly. Took it to the dealer twice and they said they could not duplicate it and there was nothing wrong.  All sorts of BS like usual.  Took it back last week and first mechanic said nothing wrong.  I persisted and another tech, a transmission specialist said there is definitely something wrong with the transmission but he does not know what.  I have an appointment to have it fixed tomorrow.  Said it would be a major job and I should expect to use their rental for about 3 days.

I only notice my problem while in slow traffic, or slowing to make a 90 degree tury (which is probably why I am traveling slow)  Mine shows up mostly between twenty and twenty five, either up or down.  If if am traveling at regular speed and slow to a stop then I notice it at stop.  Probably because 20mph to stop is so close together.

My 04 has 29,000 miles on Z71

If you are interested just drop me an eml in a few days and I will give you an update.

By the way I am schedule to have the gator aide done next week.  I am also getting rid of it as soon as I can find another just like it.

My dealer said this was normal. This is the 1st vehicle I've ever heard do this and I've had plenty. If seasoned Chevy truck owners say it's normal then I believe them. Don't know if I'll ever get used to it though.

my 02 does the same thing, my old man is a mechanic and he said that the noise is normal for aluminum drive shafts to do that. he is a die hard Chevy fan so we have owned many.
