Water Management Description and Operation

Cargo Area Water Flow Direction and Cleaning of the Drains

The cargo area has the ability to operate in many different configurations (cargo panels on or off, mid-gate up or down, rear window in or out), allowing the cargo and passenger area to be open to the environment. To allow the vehicle to operate in these configurations, it is equipped with features to help it resist the elements and protect cargo inside the cargo area. Parts of the water management system, which are designed to quickly direct water out of the cargo box, are the top drain grates, side rail channels, catch cups, mid-gate drain, cargo area floor drains and the rubber cargo floor mat.

To ensure that the water management system performs properly, ensure that the mid-gate, tail-gate and cover system are fully closed and that each element of the water management system is clean and not blocked with debris.

Important

All drain valves are removable for cleaning of the valve and the drain channel. Please note the position of the drain valve to the vehicle before removal. Improper installation of a drain valve will allow improper draining of the water and possible excessive water intrusion into the cargo/cab area.

Even when the water management system is working properly and the cargo area cover system is on, there may be some instances (heavy rains, automated car washes, etc.) when water may be present.

In the graphics below the gray arrows show water flow direction in the cargo area and the cargo area cover system. For the cargo area parts identification, refer to Cargo Area Water Management System Identification .

A large percentage of water will flow off the cargo area cover system. A small percentage of water will flow into the cargo area cover drain/seals and then into the cargo area water management system.

wms2.JPG

The small percentage of water that will flow into the cargo area water management system will drain out under the vehicle and the rear wheelwells.

Waterleaks Between End Gate and Hard Cover Seal (Sand Down Rough Finish) #02-08-66-002 - (Feb 27, 2002)

2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

2002 Cadillac Escalade EXT

Condition

Some customers may comment on water leaking down the inside of the endgate.

Cause

The rough finish on the endgate may allow water to leak past the seal.

Paint

Currently, the only approved refinishing material for the S-RIM is *Roman Hass Mat-Tec Composite Box Refinish Paint approved by General Motors for refinishing of the composite box. *Rohm & Hass Automotive Coatings will be providing the paint kits. To order, refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 01-08-60-001 titled "Availability of Repair Kits and Paint for Structural Reaction Injection Molding (SRIM) Composite Box." Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for application instructions.
This is enough to service about eight vehicles.

* We believe these sources and their product to be reliable. There may be additional manufacturers of such products. General Motors does not endorse, indicate any preference for or assume any responsibility for the products or equipment from these firms or for any such items which may be available from other sources.

Correction

  1. Remove the gate assembly.
  2. Remove the straps and endgate handle screws.
  3. Wash and clean the endgate.
  4. Tape the latches and spoiler.

index.php

  5. Sand the endgate with 240 grit paper from the black line outward. Remove the stipple only. DO NOT SAND DOWN TO THE SUBSTRATE. Refer to the illustration.
  6. Do not create a hard line with tape. Sand the top portion smooth and feather it into the grain.
  7. Scuff the remaining area of the endgate.
  8. Blow any dust off of the endgate and wash and clean.
  9. Tape and paper both sides.
  10. Apply two coats to the sanded area and one coat to the overall panel.
  11. Remove the tape and reinstall hardware.
  12. Install the endgate assembly.

Correction

Replace the midgate seal.

  1. Fold the rear seat down.

  7. Remove the ramp/gutter.
  8. Remove the weatherstrip/seal and clean the latch reinforcement cross bar of any sealant.
  9. Install the weatherstrip/seal. When installing the new seal, install the seal at the outboard ends first by fitting the upper and lower carriers on the flange, then work the excess toward the middle. Be certain to hook each outboard metal tab on the crossbar seal.
 10. Install the ramp/gutter.
 11. Install the two rubber end plugs.
 12. Install the six 10 mm nuts that retain the ramp/gutter to the latch reinforcement cross bar.

Tighten the 10 mm nuts to 4 N?m (35 lb in).

 13. Install the latch reinforcement cross bar.
 14. Close the midgate.

Thank you very much for posting the cargo bed information and drawings. I signed up for this forum because of this post. I am new here so pardon me if I make mistakes until I get use to this forum. I realize this post is six years old but if someone is still monitoring this post I would like to know if anyone has replaced both left and right channels on the sides of the cargo area and how is it done along with what to look out for. I own a 2007 Cadillac EXT and both of these channels are cracked where the corner of the horizontal and vertical points meet at the bottom. I just got the new ones in the mail and if someone could help me with ideas of how to replace them so I don't ruin this new set I'd appreciate it. :) I also would like to know if someone has found a better way or better product than what GM put in these trucks. Thank you again for posting this bed information. The Cadillac forum doesn't have this as far as I know.

Here's one of quite a few threads about the gutters.  They simply pull straight down to remove and have clips attached to them.  Simply align the clips and push back up. https://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php?topic=140147.0
