Myth: ?You cannot have hard cover panel number one off and panels number two and three on. ?The number one panel must be installed because they all lock into each other. ?:cautious:

Fact: ?Not true. ? ;D ?The locks on the hard cover panels for two and three lock into the tracks and not into the adjacent cover. ?You can have cover two and three on, cover three on by itself, or even cover two on by itself (or one and three - you get the idea).

How do I know? ?Stopped at Lowes and picked up 20 bags of bark mulch. ?Also had to carry a new gas trimmer and some other stuff - had the entire clan with me, which created a problem. ?The rear of the Avalanche with all hard covers on will hold 20 2 cubic foot bags of bark mulch perfectly - but nothing else. Dropping the midgate was not an option with the kids (and a split 60/40 midgate would have been PERFECT for this situation.

Sooooo I removed cover number one, stacked four extra bags between the back glass and the sail panels, and put the remaining gear, as well as cover number one in the back of the Avalanche.

BTW - my wife and I did the math and cargo, passengers and Av was around 7,400 pounds - ran and handled like a dream.

God I love this truck!

My concern would be that the front edge of the next installed panel would not be secure. The panel could catch some air and lift up. With panel 1 removed is the front edge of panel 2 anle to be lifted? How much effort?

Half-breed

I have to agree with Halfbreed here Chief. Panel #1 is latched in all corners. Without it, panel #2 would only be secured at the rear. How did that work out ?

It wasn't an issue. The seam between panel one and two is still behind the sail panel, so not a lot of wind getting through there. Further I didn't roll down the interstate in this state. I don't think between 1 and 2 is an issue - now 3 out there by itself at 80 MPH with no cargo sticking up over to cut the wind - ya that might be an issue...
