About to install a z2 in my 04..
Do I need a dash kit to install the unit? I would assume yes

I already have the pac adapters for the onstar, chimes and steering wheel controls

are you talking about a dash kit as needed for the 02 double DIN installs? if so, then nope, you dont need it.

I'm referring to whatever may be needed to mount the unit to the dash...such as the oem headunit is mounted with 4 screws..

Thanks!

You will need an install kit for the dash, otherwise there is no way to mount it. The Avic z-1 and z-2 have numerous screw holes in the chassis so that your mounting kit has options for depth adjustment in the dash.

timvan....how did your install work out???

Pretty easy..had to dremel the rear support out to make some room...other than that it was cake...also installed visualogic headrest monitors...easy as well..

The avic sounds much nicer than the stocker..
Unfortunately mine is at pioneer to get repaired as it decided not to boot up when hot sometimes (seems to be somewhat common over at avic411.com) then she died completely..
So definitely buy yours from a authorised dealer, flat rate service is $200.0 from pioneer..

Sorry to hear that. Where did you purchase yours and do the units not have a standard one year warranty that covers stuff like that?  Also were there any special mounting kits or a bezel that you had to order to install it?

I got mine off the net..warranty not honored...but I am still waaaay under the retail price ... even with this repair I only have $1800 in it

You will need a metra kit, I had to shave some of the trim on top and bottom..

You said that its a typical problem with the Z2 to over heat.  Did pioneer state they had a fix for it or is it just a hard drive issue or what?

Pioneer service is great (if its fixed)...they recd it on wed and i had it back on Monday.
They are aware of the hot start issue, they just do not have a cure. They reset my unit, if I am to have issues again they will either a) replace the hard drive b) send a new Z2

The tech I spoke to said that that the techs in Japan are working on it but are having a difficult time reproducing the issue, thus do not have a cure.

All, I'm new here. I bought my 07 back in August of 06. I've decided after reading a lot of the threads in here to have the AVIC Z2 installed. I'm going with a company install (MyerEmco). Please tell me if I'm getting a good deal:

Radio: 1899. 99
Labor: 200. 00
Sterring controls adpt: 74. 99
Labor: 80. 00
Rear view Camera: 239. 90
Labor: 150. 00
Dash Kit: 37. 99
Ipod adpt: 25. 99
Labor: 30. 00
Install accessories: 169. 00
Total before taxes: 2908. 85

They'll have it done in a day 1/2. I don't want to take it to Bestbuy or Circuit City if I don't have to. I'm not good at installing myself so I would feel comfortable having a company do it.

Am I getting ripped off? Can someone help me?

Bino ???

:welcome:

To the club buddy......As far as the components and accessories yes the price seems fairly close to what I paid. I assume you don't have XM?  I'm not sure what the Z2 typically goes for...I just knew I couldn't afford it.... ;)

As far as labor I'm sure it varies from place to place, but as long as they do a quality job with warranty and you're happy with the install, then thats all that matters.  Plus it helps you to avoid the headache of having to do it yourself... :E:  I say go ahead and be happy.

And don't forget to post pics.

anyone else that has the Z1 or the Z2 ... do you really need all that extra stuff and where did you get it ...

I have just a plain jane 03 radio ... no bose, no xm, no 6 disc changer ....

I can see needing the dash kit ... where can I get it?
???
but if I want to use the factory steering wheel controls, I need to get an adaptor?? ok, where can I get that?? ???

and the Ipod adaptor ... guess I could get that for future use as I don't currently have an ipod ... ???

and the rear view camera I'd also like to get later ....

let me know ... from the people in the know ... thanks

$460 for labor, $38 for a dash kit, $170 for install accessories? ?

$460 seems high for 1/2 day install. ?The dash kit can be bought at Circuit City for $25. ?$170 includes what? ?RCA cables, tape and zip ties? ?

If it was me, I'd take a few days to read up on the install, ask lots of questions and find a friend to help. ?Even if you have to pay full retail (no discounts) you'll still end up saving around $500.

I was thinking that the $169 included the PAC adaptor....I would assume thats needed.? That would run at least $125 depending on his current OEM radio.? After recently installing a AVIC D3, mind you, I know how time consuming and frustrating it can be to do an install for the first time.? Now if you have nothing but free time on your hands and you have patience or a buddy with some knowledge it may not be that bad, but definitely don't try it without being prepared and researching what it take to make the install and all the parts and components it will take.?

Yeah $400-500 is a good chunk of money but sometimes its worth it for a piece a mind and lack of frustration....this just coming from someone that spends money like it grows on trees...according to my wife....

I didn't install the Z1 or Z2 but I would assume the process is very simular to the D3. And by no means am I an install expert.? I'm only commenting bc I know how it is to wait and wait and wait on someone to respond to these post.? For all the extras you've got to have the adaptors and like grnxnam said you can get the install kit from Circuit City, but you will also need the steering wheel adaptor and I assume a PAC kit for connection to your existing speakers, but since you don't have a bose this may not be neccesary.? I ordered all accesories from JPCustoms.? Jason is pretty good at telling you what you need just make sure he understands what you currently have and what your needs are....in regards to what additional functions you will want.

And you don't have an Ipod....you get one of these too...

If you get an AVIC you've got to get an ipod. The pioneer interface is awsome!!

WOW!? I didn't expect half of the info and responses. ?You guys are up early!!! :D
As for the half day. . . install, I forgot to add the 1 before it, it will take 1 and 1/2 days to install. ?

I'm overseas in the Desert right now but I'll be back in three weeks and my GF will have this installed before I get back. ?

I'll post the pics as soon as I get back. ?

Thanks for all your help. ?

thanks guys ...

not sure I would need a pac adapter for the radio as I've replaced the factory speakers with new speakers and a 4-channel amp ....

I would see needing an adapter for the steering wheel controls and the ipod adapter ... I guess if this is the way I'm going then I will give JP Customs a call ...
