Bad Noise from motor

I am hearing a dreaded noise from my truck. I know its impossible to describe the noise, but i will do my best, it sounds like i am dragging a piece of metal on the ground with my truck, just a scrapping noise. (and no i checked to make sure i am not dragging any metal), its not a screeching noise, so i dont think it is my brakes.

The only times I have heard this noise is if my truck sits for at least 30 minutes or so and only when i first start to drive, but then goes away. I only hear it when i am pressing on the gas and will last a little bit after i release my foot. i have not noticed any performance change or anything at all, just a terrible noise every once in a while, but it goes away after i drive a couple blocks.

Unfortunately since it doesnt always make the noise, i cant really pop the hood and listen for where it is coming from, so i have no idea from where, i know its a long shot, but anyone have any ideas?

OK does the noise sound like it's coming from the front or back, the Driver side or passenger side.  You said it happens when you are driving not at idle so that should(I say that vaguely) may not be the motor. have you been on a dirt roads lately

first off? :welcome: to the club Nebraska Guy, and I feel your pain, or hear your noise so to say, lol, I've occasionally heard the same thing, but since I've got extended warranty, let her go, lol.? Seriously though, I'm wondering if its a heat shield vibration or perhaps the cat making noise, I'd be interested in knowing also.

Didit

Didit good suggestion, I was thinking the infamous rock in the rotors. But I  don't think it's the engine

welcome :welcome:.... Didit is on the right track. The heat sheild on top of the muffler come loose and make a nasty sound. A good muffler shop can tack weld it back in place for you if thats the noise.

Good luck.

Mark

BTW good first post I see you have been here for 2 years

I had an awful noise with otherwise normal operation on my 66 Chevelle 396. It was a cracked flex plate.

`Wasn't much fun R&R the trans & tq converter but right at the crank bolt holes were a few cracks.

Someone had a bad Torque Convertor or something... look for that post...

The noise is definetely coming from the front of the truck, but not sure if engine bay or maybe even wheel area. It got really bad this weekend, it was sounding like a baseball card in the spokes of a bicycle, i think i am gonna see if i can convince a friend of mine to hang off the front of the truck with the hood popped while driving and see if he can figure out where the noise is coming from

that could be a broken flex plate...

better get it in and have it looked at

did you say you had an ext warranty?  that would be a good thing
hope it's something simple!!!

Well I am 99% sure I have figured out what the noise is. I attempted many things and messed around for a while the other day and figured it out. It is coming from the a/c condensor. Its making that noise when it is attempting to engage or disengage or whatever. I am not sure what to do at this point, I may attempt to ignore it when i hear it by turning the a/c off. I am fairly mechanically inclined, but i think replacing the a/c condensor is a little out of my league, never done it before.

Like i stated before i dont hear it that often, so maybe its not a big deal (yeah right, but i am keeping my fingers crossed)

AC compressor, not condensor.  Condensor is the radiator-like piece of the AC system.

If compressor is going out you need licensed person to evac system...

then you can replace compressore and I say clutch too...

then take back and have them recharge

They don't have to be licensed.Wonderful thing about 134.You can just let it leak into air.Not as bad as 12 that is why you can buy it in store without license.replace condensor and compressor.but ya take it to have it vacumed after you reinstall the compressor. You can go without but it will only last 4 about 2 years then the comp will blow.

You don't need to replace the condensor.

Replacing the receiver/dryer is recommended with a new compressor, not the condensor.

I did that on the S-10. 2X. The second time was the new compressor that locked up, even with a new dryer/accumulator, flush out and screen change. :E:

So, I keep a set of gauges, a vacuum pump and a tank of R12.  Even with that, I needed to go to a friend with a recovery system since I needed to change the screen/exp valve 3X due to the residual metal debris from the compressors. They leave quite a mess in the system when they go.

`Don't have the R134 stuff for the Av yet. :(

well whatever the hell is wrong with my truck, compressor/condensor/whatever, i am just gonna wait till that damn thing breaks and i am forced to fix it

So it stops making any racket with the A/C off?

If the compressor locks up. the belt/pully will usually maintain enough torque to slip the magnetic clutch on the compressor.

If that happens, it'll heat up very quick from all that friction (and would have been hot enough to look white after it cools down).

Yeah, if i turn off my a/c the noise will stop immediately and someimtes i wont hear it again after having the a/c off for a couple of minutes

Actually the law requires you to be licensed for the R134 just a loop hole that lets you buy it.

If I had this problem I would get it fixed right away not wait for it to go completely and get debry in the system to take out the new compressor. I can't afford to fix thing 2-3 times instead of once.

In case anyone is curious as I was to what this funny noise was I will tell you: According to the chevrolet dealership that worked on it, it was a hair low on freon and that was it. No Leaks, nothing broken, so I am on cloud 9 currently due to the fact that I am poor and cant afford some big expensive project on my car
