Bad Vibration

The only thing that has changed on my truck that I know of is last weekend I replaced both u-joints on the driveshaft for the rear axel. Only 1 was bad but I did both since I had the driveshaft off.

I drove the truck on Sunday after working on it and didn?t notice anything strange. I don?t know how fast I drove it but it was at least 60-65. On Monday I rode my motorcycle to work since it was nice out and on Tuesday I ended up taking the day off work. The problem started today the first time I have really driven it since working on it other than the quick run into town on Sunday.

So here is what it does, at about 60MPH I start to hear a buzz at 65MPH I can feel something in the small of my back (I have the lumbar adjusted as far as it will go) and the buzz is louder. Then by the time I hit 70MPH the entire truck is vibrating so bad that I can?t see anything out the mirrors. I haven?t gone over 70 and it was only for a minute. I?m going to crawl under it tonight once I get it home and see if there is anything obvious. Maybe a weight came off the drive shaft or a bulge in one of the tires. Any other ideas?

I'll give that a shot. It is only 4 bolts. I want to look and see if all the weights are there as well. I might have lost one but I really doubt it. They are usually on there pretty well.

Wait. You are saying take apart the u-joints and flip the entire thing or disconnect it from the rear diif and rotate it in the yolk 180 deg?

I know that the driveshaft didn't get flipped when changing the u-joints because I did them one at a time.

I was answering a sarcastic question with a sarcastic answer :)

Rotate it 180 degrees

Yes it sounds like the driveshaft is out 180.
I have had this happen before, look at the yoke on the driveshaft and you should see a mark or line usually white with a correspnding mark on the pinion yoke, match them and you should be good to go

I was going to mark it before taking it appart but couldn't find any chalk. It was a 50/50 shot. I alway seem to loose at those.

Well I went back to riding the motorcycle because I didn't have time to try and rotate the shaft until tonight. That did solve the issue. I took the truck out on a test drive and ran it up to 75 and it was as smooth as ever.

Thanks for the info.
