When waxing my truck this weekend I noticed my first real scratch :C:. Right in the passenger side of the hood down to the metal is a small ding, looks like a rock or something like it must have skipped from the direction of the drivers side headlamp towards the passenger side mirror. The dent is very minor, are there any suggestions on the best way to fix this, or is this a job for the body shop?

Thanks,
Gatorjedi

Choice.,,,,,,

If dented try a dentless guy and have him bang it out and then use touch up paint with clear and a langka kit.....not perfect but can be pretty dayum good...

OR

Body shop...they will have to repaint entire hood for proper clear coat bonding and life...Clear cannot be blended to last nor look good in the long run......

If it's actually a ding in the metal and not just a chip in the paint you might try the blowdryer and icecube trick. You can find it elsewhere on this forum with a search.

Thanks for the replys guys, I will search for the blowdryer/ice cube trick and see if it works. Do you think touch up paint will look ok if I let it cure for a while then use some compound to blend it?

A real hot day and a chunk of dry ice will pop a dent out.
Faster than the ice cube (colder). Try the ice cube first and see if it works, dry ice used to be a b---h to find in small quantities, and watch it, it will burn you good if you touch it (Yep, cold does burn)
I think the touchup and clear will look fine in a small area, if it is a large area resign yourself to a body shop repair. Just take your time with the touchup.

It can look good if you take the time to do it correctly....thin layers of paint...build it up slowly.....make sure it is clean and dries before additional coats......IF you find the LANGKA kit sanding and polishing may not be required....

Metallic paints hide blemishes pretty good.

Hi Ygmn,
What exactly is a LANGKA kit, it it similar to the repair kit GM parts direct sells for fixing scratches & dings?

Thanks again for all the help guys,

It is company that designed this product to help level out touch up paint......Mother is either owns them now or is partnered with them

Basically all touch up paint will work with it since they are laquor based...the langka is a laquor thinner......PLASTI COTe has a similar product called paint leveler....

What you do is touch up with the color coat...let it dry (I say 2-24 hours) and then use this leveler on a soft towel to level out the paint...it does this since it is a thinner for the paint.....THis will not effect newer factory paints since they are polyurethane based.....

You repeat this process untill satisified with the color coat and then you go to the clear touch up paint...2-3 max coats here and the last one is important....make sure it is slightly higher.....less then a milimeter...then you wipe the leveler soaked towel over it and it will wipe away some leaing it level with surrounding paint.....

I am in process of this on my truck...it takes time...I do a coat a week......

the leveler will also clean up any touch up you get on surrounding factory paint....

Check pep boys they have the plasti COTE touch up color and clear as well as the leveler.

I will post some pics at my secondary website of the bottles and directions for each.....

? I found this Post about a dent being removed from a hood. How about removing a dent on the Over the Fender metal buldge. I had an owl do a Modification early in the morning on my left front Fender. If I would have had the over the Fender cladding it would have been a non-issue but since they don't make it yet I have a Grape fruit size dent in my fender buldge. I would be extremely interested on anyone who has used the paintless Dent removal Companies out there on this particular portion of the Avalanche. My search didn't show any post with Dents being removed in this area. I did read that it depended on where the dents were located as to whether the dent could be removed. Also does it matter how lond the dent has been in the truck. I'm in Africa for 3.5 more weeks and its been a couple of weeks since I committed the owlnihilation, birdicide, or birder in the first degree. I crack myself up sometimes. I've been acting this way ever since the disfigurement of my precious. I suspect it has something to do with stress. ?:2:

I can tell you first hand the hot cold trick works as long as it is a ding only - must be round and not have a crease. Get it hot and set a baggie full of ice on it right quick - it must be hot mind you and it may take a couple tries. Once when I worked at my Fathers Chevy dealership as a young man we had a hail storm come through town and the old and wise body man used this method on over 250 car hoods, roofs and trunck lids with great success.

Poor owl probably didn't know what hit him. ?;D
I have had very good luck with the dent removers on my cars. They typically charge $85 a panel, whether you have one ding in a door, quarter, etc.. or three. Haven't had to call them on the Av yet.
I've used the same guy several times, it's amazing the techniques they work with. He did have to drill a small hole inside the door jam of my Lexus to get to one. When he finished he capped it with a rubber plug. Looks like the factory plugs that are there anyway. Black car, black plug, big deal.
Try them out, they can work magic....

I got back from Africa Yesterday and the first thing after giving the wife a kiss I took my Avy over too a dent removal guy. Took about an hour but I can't see the dent. You can still feel it on the sheet metal but it's basically invisible to the eye. $100 is a heck of a lot cheaper way to remove a dent than bondo paint or quarter panel repair. If you live in the East Texas area IM me and I will give you the dent removal guys name and number. Thanks to you guys I saved quite a bit of Dinero.
