Biggest [fuel] Fill On 1500?  Post 'em!

after rollin' on next to nothing for over 20 miles after the warning...

the 1500 filled 27.35 gal @ 1.53per... totaling around 42$

:B:

The best I have done is 27 gals. that was about 30 miles after light came on. Are there any variables, such as 31gals tank holding 1 or 2 gals more or less? Also does the warning light come on at the same level, vehicle to vehicle?

Just thinking out loud.

I don't know how you guys do it....If I ever let the Av get below a quarter tank...I think I would have a heartattack.....thus I don't think I would provide any real results in this dept.... :B:

On my trips back & forth to Detroit the other day I went about 40 miles past when the light came on, and it took 29 gallons.
My avg was 16.2 mpg.

I never get too low. I fill up whenever I get my beer!

I always make the amount ##.61 and then get my beer.
It always comes up ##.00. I've gone to the same place for years and these guys are always amazed.
'WOW - it come up even. How you do that?'

I always gas up at about 1/4 of a tank or so. I have a buddy who is a GM mechanic who spends most of his days replacing the $700 fuel pump in Silverado's. The fuel pumps are gas cooled. So when you hit the bottom of that tank they are not covered in gas anymore and can burn up.

good point byron...

thats reason enough for me to not force the situation and fill-up before the light comes on... (y)

Wow...that is money that can be used for mods...instead of replacing a fuel pump....hey that would be headers for my Av.... :D :B:

that is good info Byron. thanx. i try to fill up at about a 1/4 anyway to keep the trash out the pump and filter. now i have an even better reason. :B:

I try not to remember how much each fill up is.....I mentally block it out until the card statement comes in and then I spend a few moments with Jim Beam, and Jack Daniels to wash away the sorrow!!!! (not really)

Friday night, I was pushing the gas mileage as there is one exit on I65 where gas is 20 cents cheaper per gallon. Range said 40 miles when it went into sulk mode (only says Fuel Low), and I was 32 miles from the exit.
I put in 31.6 gallons at the exit. My everloving was biting her nails the last 10 miles.....

Dang! Tree-Hugger! Great work!

So did they enlarge the fuel tank on the '03 1500? I thought it was only 31 gal...

31 gal on the '03's AFAIK. Speaking of, I'm not going to make a habit of running it this low, but my new '03 is on its first tank of gas and I wanted to see when when the light would come on. I'm in the red and no light. What gives? Does my "stripped-down" Z71 not have the light? Is it a part of the convenience package that I don't have?

My reading of the manual is 'approx' 31 gallons, so I don't distrust the pump's reading of 31.6 gallons. It first cutoff at 30.55, this was a second squeeze. I suspect I had a VERY close to totally empty tank, and fuel in the filler neck after I filled up.
My real response is now to basically trust the last 'Range' reading (before 'sulk mode'!), but still fill up at the first reasonable opportunity after 'sulk mode' is initiated.
BTW, I can't see why you would expect to get crud into the lines at the bottom end of a tank. The input to the pump is ALWAYS at the bottom of the tank, doesn't matter how much fuel you have in there, it always sucks it from the same place....
And leaving it full(when possible) when parked overnight to avoid condensation USED to make sense. But now every vehicle runs a positive pressure fuel vapor return to the tank, and your empty tank is now full of that, not humid air.....
I think these are another couple of 'used-to-be-trues' it's long past time to retire (like not cross-rotating radials!)

On the way back from Charleston, SC on Friday I finally got one worth posting and since a picture is worth a thousand words...

The biggest I can remember happened only a couple days ago. and let me tell you I was sweating the ride to the gas station. Once that light came on I tried to get to the station but needed to stop home for the gas card first. Then the long slow drive to the gas station. There is a gas station in my town it closes at 6pm though.

I ended up putting 28.76 gallons into it. Not beating any one here but sure had me on edge during that ride to the gas station. I kept thinking "well, its not raining so the walk won't be that bad." and "I hgope they don't charge me to borrow a gas can."

Thanks for the heads up on the fuel pump being cooled by the gas. I will try to keep it over a quarter tank from now on.

Coming back from the beach..I really pushed it. 30.9 gallons.

I was literally on vapors. Sorry no proof, but nothing to lie about here.

ah man...i push 28-29 gallons every time i get gas...i don't like to fill up until the last minute...i like to be able to shop around for a deal on gas and see if the price will drop...of course my luck it rarely does...but i have a few gas stations i like to scout on the way to or from work and if i see one just before the light comes on with a much cheaper price of gas i might stop...i figure if i'm filling nearly 30 gallons a shot...then 5-10 cents a gallon really helps...and it's the principle of paying too much for gas that drives me to wait on the light...i'll have to keep track and see if i run the Av under 30 gallons...I've filled 29.75 gallons before but I was getting nervious that i'd run out...
i have run out of gas in my mom's camaro with her in it...b/c i was pushing it to get to a less expensive gas station...I nearly ended up literally pushing it

I just filled up 232 gallons so I could make a cross country trip without so many stops! Since the bed is so "leakproof" I just plugged the drain holes and filled her up with 93 octane. Connected a syphon tube over the side into the tank.It was a huge bill I don't have the reciept since I immediately drove off the lot (after I busted the cameras with my baseball bat) I mean like, I"M not gonna pay a bill like that! Would you?? It is really smelly though....and DO NOT open up the midgate!! This part is very important.

Sincerely not....

Oh, I really do sincerely wish the computer on the 03's would not give up after 40 miles to go! It should take you down to the last mile. It would be so cool for betting purposes and the macho thing of gas station logistics.

30.8.... no proof....just a wallet that floated like a birthday balloon in space! $51.00. 'Nuff said.

A bit off topic - but my Dad was an "expert" at getting the last bit of gas out of his car. I remember twice being in the car with him and COASTING into the gas station 'cuz we were out of gas! He was the "busy" type of guy running here and there, and I think buying gas was a low-priority. Now guys like that (me!) have the idiot light to say "Honey - shouldn't you get gas now?"
