MFR, model, price would be appreciated.

Thanks

Does the Billet door have the gas cap hanger inside like our OEM?

No, but some of us are thinking about that MOD.

Go the Radio Shack and get part #278-1640A. It is package of 10 "Self-Sticking Cable/Utility Clips" and stick one to the inside of the billet fuel door, then you can hang the gas cap, when you fill up. The clips come in various sizes, so you can use the size you prefer. Keep on modding.

Thanks for the tip! I'll stop tomorrow at lunch and get some. I just put on the door over the weekend, and not having that clip was my only reservation. Problem solved!

Thanks for the great tip! I'll be stopping at the 'Shack tonight to check them out!

Is the billet gas cap door easy to install??? Whenever someone says its 5 minutes job I muliply my time by 10.

Also, good idea on the radio shack clip, still someone should send a note to AMP to make that mod....FYI, of no particular importance, I've got an AMP mountain Bike...

Yes. Easy to install. Maybe 10 minutes.

There are some photos and discussion in the original topic:

Billet Fuel Filler Door.

BTW - I did the Clip MOD. I will post some photos in a bit.

Here's a quick night MOD.

fuel_door_clip.jpg
?

It is functional holding the cap about an inch away from the cladding when you install the clip in the center of the fuel door. ?It isn't pretty but I have 9 more to play with to MOD them to make them more attractive ?>:D

update - what is wrong with me? i was just looking at the photo and wondering how i can get some neon in there

BTW, I use the same clip stuck on the inside of my console to hang my locking gas cap key. If you have your locking gas cap key on the keychain with everything else, it become very cumbersome to unlock the cap. I found after much fumbling trying to unlock the gas cap, it was better to separate the key from everything else, let in hang on the clip, and retreive it when needed. Keep on modding

The hook makes a nice mod to a mod. I just spent a minute with a sharp hobby knife, and made a mod to the mod to a mod. I left the base, and the circular clip part. I trimmed off everything else off of the base, as well as the protrusions on the outside of the circular portion. I'm left with a nice smooth circular clip, with a lot more room at the top for inserting the cap's "leash."

I'll post before/after and installed pics tonight when I get home.

As promised, here's pics of the mod to the mod to the mod.

I took the hook, and using a hobby knife, trimmed off everything except the circular part of the hook. Here's a before/after pic of a "stock" hook on the left, and one after the mod on the right:

Goo mounted his in the center of the door, but I found that mounting it a bit higher gives more clearance to the tethered cap. In that position the cap hangs about two and a half inches from the truck. Furthermore, even if you push on the cap, it can't hit the truck as long as it's in the clip. Here's what it looks like on the truck:

Yes, the truck really is blue, not black. Just a trick of the light and the angle of the flash I guess. The rest of the truck really is the same color as that little blue tab inside the filler. Go figure.

This is a neat solution, thank's DoctorT! The only think that could make it better is if it were aluminum and mounted by the manufacturer. (y)

SS -

I am going to try the MOD to the MOD to the MOD.

You know, clip does match the inside of the gas cap ;D

Did you do you MOD at night too?

Your AV sure does look black ;)

Hey Goo...didn't someone post about a month ago a link to a company that manufactured neon gas caps? They even had one for the Avalanche. I don't have the link anymore since my computer tossed its cookies but..... :cautious:

Shapeshifter, I like your mod of my mod. As a matter of fact, as soon as I finish this reply, I am going to the garage and trim off the excess per your instructions. Love this site -- sharing ideas with you folks and getting feedback that's superior to mine. I love learning new things every day. Keep on modding.

True synergy, many minds working together. Hey, does this forum count as a distributed processing neural net? Talk about a supercomputer!

On the other hand... Neon gas caps?

I think I'll paint one to match my truck and add it.
Hmmmm... paint.... :0:

I hadn't considered that. What kind of paint will stick to the nylon (or whatever plastic it's made of)? I'm concerned about chipping. I think I'll scuff it up with sandpaper, and dab on a little touch-up paint. Then I'll play with it. If it sticks, I'll put it on the truck. If it chips, I'll skip it. As bad as the white clip looks, I think a half painted/half chipped clip would look worse. :6:

Rit dye may work depending on what type of plastic or nylon is used in the clips.

Here are a couple of pictures showing the style of retainer that I used:

For those that would like black, the wife suggested using a Sharpie. It won't chip.
