Boston Acoustics ???

You'll be happy to know that they will indeed fit in the doors of your Av.

Personally I think Bostons are overrated, there are many other speaker for less money that sound just as good if not better. Speakers are all a personal opinion so if your happy with the sound go for it. All I'm saying is make sure you audition at least 6 sets of speakers in your price range at different stores before making up your mind.

Thanks for the info guys.
I tested a few pairs.
JL Audio - what I wanted, but didnt sound great.
MB Quart
Kenwood
Alpine- Like the sound
Boston- Liked the sound of these the best. (y)

Is there any that you guys recommend, so maybe I can give them a listen.

Josh

I spent a lot of time listening to all kinds of different brands of speakers and ended up with Boston Pros all around (including sub). For me they definitely sounded the best for the wide range of music I listen to and they are great for the DVDs that the kids watch on trips. I don't know if the Bostons are "the best bag for your buck" but the salesman I got them from at Audio King gave them to me for less that half price! In his words "it just wouldn't be right to have your amps and set-up running anything but the best". I think it had something to do with the amount of money on spent on the two complete audio/video systems I put in my Av and my wife's Denali. I'm afraid to even mention the dollar amount!

Are you just upgrading your speakers, or have you already upgraded your amp, etc. I have the stock Bose system and it is only "ok". I would like to improve it, but dont want to change the factory look. Do you think the Boston Acoustics speakers alone make a noticable improvement?

Bitter, YES Bitter even at half price. The big drawback now is that I'm so used to them that they seem standard. I often find myself wondering, "is this all they have?" But, all I have to do is hitch a ride with a friend that has stock equipment and then I quickly remember how good I have it! It's like having a car with power windows or heated seats. . .you'll never own another without them! So, word to the wise. . .know what you are getting into if you decide to upgrade! It's not the intial cost, it's what it'll cost you down the road!

I just had the stock system, in the 03 there is no amp with the delphi. I added the JL Audio Stealthbox and a JL 250/1 amp to start. Then I upgraded the HU to a Pioneer 8400. Soon after I added XM.
This setup sounds great, but I really want to upgrade the door speakers to get an even better sound. Probally will put an amp to these speakers as well.

I ran Boston Acoustics along with MQ Quarts in my 1995 Grand Am GT. They complemented each other nicely. The Boston Acoustics gave me a better range on vocals. This time I went with all MB Quart in the AV.

I would definitely recommend Focal Power Series as well as the CDT CL-61a's at thezeb.com for $300 all around for 4 components you won't find a better deal. Honestly, stereo shop walls aren't the best to listen to things in because many shops will alter the speakers to sound worse if they don't make as big of a margin on them (sad but true). If you can listen to them in a vehicle its probably best.

No matter what you pick, just enjoy them ;D

JJ,

You're the proud owner of some nice equipment! With a good install you should have a vehicle that would make damn near anyone jealous of the sound quality.

As for the crossovers, a lot of people mount them in the doors themself, some are more worried about the elements harming them and mount them in the kickpanels, under the dash, displayed near the amps, or where ever in the interior you want them.

I heard an old saying about speaker mounting that makes a lot of sense: "Mount the speakers where you want sound to come from."
If you're looking for good imaging, the mid placement is going to be more important than the tweeter placement. Frequencies around the 400Hz range are totally distance dependent when it comes to imaging. The tweeter mounted in the door would sound fine and make for an easy install. I'd try out the A pillar as well though, the tweeter, even though it's higher frequency output is less needy when it comes to imaging, can give the illusion of a much higher soundstage when mounted higher. Use some sticky take and try out the door and the A pillar and see which sounds better to you. A lot of competitors that use kickpanel and firewall mounted component sets are using a second set of tweeters on the A pillars that are crossed over higher than the lower mounted set, just to help raise the soundstage.

As for a next step with you system, if you plan on doing anything else with it that is, check out some EQ's, like Audio Control's line of 1/3 and 2/3 octave eq's. With proper tuning, they will make a world of difference and help compensate for some of the acoustic anomalies caused by the interior and speaker placement.

Thanks for the info (y) it actually makes some sense to me :2: You seem very knowledgable on the subject, and for that you get some  oops wont alow it, so heres a big (y)

How would I adjust the Crossovers After they are in the door panel ???
So your saying mount the tweets where they sound good to me.
I have a freind who went to install school and he is going to be helping me, so he knows what he is doing. But I wanted to get ideas from others with the same vehicle.

Placing the xovers in the cab somewhere out of the way but readily accessable is the best way to go for adjustment purposes. Especially since you may, for instance, set the tweeters output in the +3dB spot, and after they are broken in a bit think they are overly bright and want to tone the down to the 0dB spot.

As far as location of the tweeters, get some two sided sticky tape and connect them with long wires, and put them in different locations, listening to you favorite tracks that you know really well. Once you find the right spot, you'll know it, and you'll be happy with them there.

Let me know how it turns out, and good luck!

Thanks. I'll be sure to take some pics of the install.

One more thing, can you point me to the thread on how to remove the door panels ???

Josh

You will like the sound of them I have the 6.5 pros installed in the front doors and I believe the nx 67's in the back. They really sounds good, but the addition of a couple subs seemed to balance everything out for me. I replaced the headunit with an alpine 7998. I have a rockford amp (600.4, 75x4) running the doors and then an alpine mdr 500x1 running 2 8" kickers in a box behind the seats, I also added a 1 farad cap on the sub amp and have another to put on the other amp but have been lazy and have not installed it yet.. I think the hardest part of the install was getting the 12 guage speaker wire through the boots on the front doors. I took some pics of the install at somepoint i will see if i can dig em up. Anyway I am very happy with the sound. (y)

oh yeah.. I installed the tweeters in the stock location and the crossovers in the front doors.
