I had mile oil changed after the first 1000 miles. Check Oil warning came on at 5600 miles and was 2 quarts low. Just checked oil level this am at 7200 miles and it is 1 quart low. This is an 8.1 Ltr engine on 2500 series AV. No apparent leaks, checked filter, oil plug and driveway. Has anyone else had this amount of oil usage on their AV?

I guess that I've been lucky with my 02 8.1.
No measurable oil use between changes. :)
Got 20,000 on the clock.

There has been some previous discussions here concerning
excessive oil use in the 8.1's

Who did your oil change?

Did they put in 6 1/2 quarts of oil back in when they changed it?

I alway check this after oil changes after getting shorted one time of 2 quarts in my old 92 camaro . Now I alway check the stick before leaving the shop . I usally get a dirty look from the tech but oh well . Human errors are fine but not when it comes to my truck !!!

Oh yeah and the wife and kids too i suppose lol .

Sometimes I don't even trust myself and double check

Bevare if you go to cheap places to get oil chaged, just do simple math, On good brand of oil they get even smaler discounts that this.
Disposal fee ( this what they pay not you) 110 gal.= $70.00
6.5 QT of oil 0.89 = $ 5.79
Cheap oil filter...........$ 1.99
Disposal fee............. $ 1.03
Total...........................$ 8.81 ( this is their cost no profit yet )
Let say they charge 19.95 for oil change
oil guy needs to get pay nad most of the time gets 33 to 40 % of labor charge $ 19.95 - $8.81 = $ 11.14 and 40% of that is $ 4.46
He really needs to move to make money like AVALANCHE WOLF said check your oil when he is done and also drain plug.
This also explain why you need air filter and the other staff when they
do oil change ( even if you just put new air filter in last week)
The prices are for real not made up story my father-in law works for
xxxx oil company.

Now what about $12.95 or 14.95 oil change will you take your truck there ?

TimA.... I'd get it checked out... your dealer can start an oil consumption test and watch it with you....

2 things happen here.....

They can determine if there is a problem and what it is/ how to fix it
They can DOCUMENT the oil use so that warranty repair won't be in question

Get your dealer involved.... if you don't have a service writer you know and trust then go straight to the service manager.... make him aware of the situation and have him direct the testing/ repairs..... Find a person who is willing to listen and help you...and then STAY with them.... some folks simply don't care... others will go th distance and REALLY try to help you.....

Don't give up... you've a great truck... this CAN be resolved! ... I've been there... I know....

If you burned that much oil, one would think it would be noticed coming from the exhaust pipe.

Plenty of power. Just some Jamaicans for neighbors, do you think they're in cahoots? Love my neighbors, but maybe their is something I don't know about them!

I've got an 8.1 in my 2003 with almost 20k on it. In the colder weather when I let the truck idle and warm up I find that just about every 3000 miles I get the low oil warning. The rest of the year the truck is fine and uses almost no oil.

Guess this is what you get for living in California. >:D

I have a friend that works at a local XXXXX Lube store and they actually get paid for their used oil and filters. I think they get .10/gal for the oil and they take the old filters away also.

Also most of these quick oil change places only provide 5 qts of oil for that bargin price, then charge you about $2/qt for extra oil. So if you have not paid for extra oil, you didn't get it!

I hope this is the case with yours and that you don't have a real oil burning problem.

Good luck

Definitely want to check oil level, yourself.

Can't burn it, if it wasn't in there to begin with.

If your spark plugs aren't getting fouled, or a build up, I don't think you're burning it. JMHO.

However, if the PCV valve isn't working properly it may allowing some oil to get past and could be building up or settling in the intake manifold. Yeah, I know, sounds weird but I had it happen once, years ago.

Keep looking, you'll feel better when it's resolved.

Good luck.

 :B:

Have them check the intake manifold bolts. I had heard that GM redesigned the manifold on an 04, but it is a know problem/source for oil blow by for a number of years. This seemed to help mine immensely.

1. Torque.

2. Type of bolts (often adding loctite).

3. Gasket.

There is a TSB on this...but it may not apply to an 04. :0:

Oil Consumption is just the first step....Next Comes Piston Slap.
According to G.M. 1 Quart of Oil for every 100 Gallons of Gas is "Normal". I Pick Up my new 04 AV with the 5.3 Tommorrow.Hopefully I'll have better luck.

Good Luck
Steve

I don't see how that is the same, I Understand the gas sucking..But I think that is just lip service on using oil!
A bigger engine uses more oil (Uses it up) than a smaller one, That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me!
I'll bet if I go do a test drive on a new one and ask them if this 8.1l burns oil I'll bet the answer is NO!!!!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of oil, and gas burning 8.1 liter. Not much you can do I'm afraid :cautious:

Hi All

Regarding the oil burning mine has settled to 2000 miles / qt using 15w50 Mobil synthetic---25000 miles on engine. When you read the oil, wait at least 30 minutes for the bleed down return to the pan.

When driving in the mountains or towing watch the oil at each gas fill.We have used as much as 1qt/300 miles using thinner oils--5w30 or 10w30.

The only difference we notice is a slightly higher oil pressure reading using the 15w50----40 to 65 psi with 5w30 to 55 to 80 psi with 15w50 Mobil 1

Yes,we still get the deisel sound on start for 1 to 3 min depending on the outside air temp. This appears to be from the upper part of the engine--valve train, lifter area. When the oil does drain down, possibly too much drains away from the valve train. What is amazing,is the initial drain period is so long before getting an accurate oil level reading!

Just wanted to add my experience for those that are interested in this subject. I purchased an 04 2500 Av 3 months ago and began reading this forum. I was hoping that the oil comsumption problem had been resolved in the o4 as most of the post on here seem to address the 02 03 8.1 engines.
As of today, I have 3600 miles and have used 1/2 qt of oil. I have not changed the oil (still using the oil that came in it). Today I added a half qt. of 5w30. Would like to see more post their experiencs. I am under the impression that some have changed to a heavier oil (10w30) and reduced the comsumption a little.
